The opportunity for children to interact with ASO through the Learning program can be a life changing experience. The creative offerings by the orchestra are of the highest standard and the program offers professional development for teachers and students that will influence them throughout their careers.

The 2019 Learning Program connects with a broad cross section of South Australian communities, from pre-school through to tertiary students and musicians in the community.

These unique experiences will inform and inspire teachers and a new generation of students, showcasing the important role the orchestra of today plays in our society.

The ASO is an innovator in music and education, and our comprehensive, all-ages Learning Program leads the way nationally. Over the last few years participatory projects with internationally acclaimed composer and presenter, Paul Rissmann, have garnered much attention and support from students, teachers and the wider community.

Our relationship with Paul has evolved over this time and I am delighted that Paul joins us once again in 2019. He will bring his magic to Adelaide in April and late July when he will work with musicians of tomorrow, students, teachers and families to infect us all with his own special brand of music making.

2019 brings a rich diversity of learning experiences: from school incursions in Little Maestros and The Bush Concert, to school excursions to our DreamBIG Children’s Festival collaboration Who needs a conductor anyway? and three concerts during the Festival of Learning all pitched at diverse age groups: Giddy Goat, Dreams of Air and Flight and Earth, Wind and Fire. For your students who dream of playing with the ASO, there is our ever popular and impactful Big Rehearsals program as well as the chance to see what happens in rehearsals in our Rehearsals Unwrapped offering. And for teachers, there are multiple Professional Development opportunities, ensuring we take care of our educators so they are empowered to instil a love of music in those they reach.

The ASO’s Learning program is having a lasting and meaningful impact on pre-school, primary and secondary school children, parents and teachers.

Creativity is at the heart of music, and the process of creation is an empowering skill for young people. This is the third in a series of ambitious creative projects by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and we invite young musicians and dancers from across South Australia to be part of this exciting new opportunity.

The project will use Aaron Copland’s ballet score, Appalachian Spring, as a catalyst for creating a new music and dance work. Participants will spend

an action-packed week developing their work under the guidance of internationally acclaimed creative director Paul Rissmann, choreographer Carlie Angel and musicians from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. They will work intensively towards creating a brand-new performance in response to Copland’s masterpiece, and then showcase their new work alongside Copland’s original ballet score performed by members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Aaron Copland’s stunning ballet score, Appalachian Spring, finds re-imagined life in this exciting concert showcasing the creative talents of a group of young musicians and dancers. week of activity incorporates professional

development for teachers and concerts with

a focus on inclusivity and participation for

students of all ages and abilities.

In this year’s Festival of Learning Paul presents

his new concert Earth, Wind and Fire for upper-

secondary students exploring the making of

selected masterworks. Continuing a tradition of

setting storybooks to music and incorporating song

and movement, for the younger audiences we

offer Giddy Goat – a tale of bravery, growth and

self-belief from author Jamie Rix and illustrated by

Lynne Chapman. And, for middle-upper primary

Paul presents Dreams of Air and Flight based on a

beautiful story by Grahame Baker-Smith which is

sure to set imaginations soaring.

The Bush Concert

A tale about community, adversity and inclusion – The Bush Concert is the story of the Australian bush and its harsh conditions. The bird community is in distress as they struggle to find water and food during drought, and come together to hold a big concert to lift everyone’s spirits– The Bush Concert!

Based on Helga Visser’s beautiful Australian book of the same name, this participatory experience engages students through song, dance, and the beautiful images from the book. Mark Simeon Ferguson’s score is a wonderful introduction to the sounds of our Australian birds, and an enchanting introduction to the instruments of the orchestra.

Big Rehearsals are all about giving young musicians the experience and opportunity to play in a professional orchestral environment. Students are encouraged to develop their musicianship and playing skills with the ASO’s Big Rehearsals. The young musicians will rehearse side-by-side with ASO musicians in an experience culminating in a special open rehearsal where family and friends are welcome to be inspired by the achievements of the participants.

Just like professional musicians, the participants will receive their music up to a month ahead of rehearsals.

Arts-based pedagogies - Exploring the use of CBL (creative and body-based learning) and other strategies for effective and active engagement in the music classroom.

Associate Professor Katie Dawson is a member of the faculties of the University of South Australia and The University of Texas at Austin, where she is director of the Drama for Schools program. She is an internationally-recognised consultant in drama-based pedagogy and creative learning, and has facilitated training, presented workshops and given interactive keynotes at universities, and professional and arts conferences around the world. Her scholarship has appeared in numerous international journals, and she is a multi-award-winning teacher and author. CBL utilises active and arts-based approaches to engage students in all areas of the curriculum. Explore how this applies to music teaching and learning.

Professor Gary McPherson is Ormond Professor and Head of the University of Melbourne’s Conservatorium of Music. He is internationally renowned for his research into the power of music in people’s lives and in children’s education, and along with Graham Welch, he co-edited Music Learning and Teaching in Infancy, Childhood, and Adolescence (Volume 2 of An Oxford Handbook of Music Education). Gary has made an extensive contribution to an increased understanding of factors involved in musical learning processes. Gary is a former President of both ISME and ASME.

What if I/we commit and then need to change or cancel our booking?

Due to the high demand, no refunds or reductions of numbers are allowed once an invoice is sent. Additional tickets may be purchased subject to availability.
