Our residential cottages at UMFS’ Child & Family Healing Center have been home to thousands of children since they were built in the 1950s. Now

they are old, and the furnishings have seen better days. Your gift will help us repair and maintain the cottages and replace worn-out beds, dressers, lamps, tables, and other items to provide healthy and caring environments for the children we serve.

When a child has been physically or sexually abused they are often frightened and distrustful of adults. Working and caring for animals helps them heal. Your gift will enable a hurting child to learn and trust again as they receive unconditional affection through our program with trained therapy dogs and horses.

UMFS students and staff prepare hundreds of meals a day in our commercial kitchens. Our large pots, pans, blenders, knives, serving spoons, utensils, potholders and towels have seen better days. Children blossom when they are given the chance to express themselves through performing art. Through your generous gift, children will be able to enroll in music lessons, take drama instruction and learn other performing arts. You will help them rebuild their self-worth and confidence. And knowing that someone cares really makes a difference to these children.

UMFS cares for children and families in 11 locations around Virginia. Our residential programs and Charterhouse School classrooms need first-aid supplies for cuts, burns, bug bites, sprains and pains. Please help us restock these much-needed supplies.

All too frequently, children in foster care with UMFS have been taken from an unsafe or abusive home. They come to us with only the clothes they have on. In these emergency situations, UMFS needs to be able to help the child and immediately provide some basic necessities. Please help us empower these children by donating to our Children’s Greatest Needs fund.

Many of our kids dream of attending college, but can’t because they lack financial resources. You can help deserving students realize their dream by becoming a college sponsor. You will receive updates and progress reports on your sponsored student, and each year you will be invited to meet the student you are empowering to succeed in college.

Help students at UMFS’ Charterhouse School gain gardening skills and grow vegetables for our kitchens. Students raise annuals and perennials to sell at the Green Thumbs plant sale every spring. To maintain this successful program, new supplies are needed every year. Your gift will help us provide garden tools, seeds and other items to make our children successful horticulturists.

UMFS provides foster and adoptive homes for many children who come from a life of abuse, neglect or abandonment. Please help us bring the joy of Christmas into their lives with a donation of $50 or more. We will provide a personal Christmas gift such as clothing, shoes, school supplies or an age- appropriate game to each child.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS OF HOPE for Virginia’s Children in Need

Yes, we have a lot of “Green Thumbs” who want to begardeners.

When a student is eager to get real work experience, UMFS helps match them with an employer in the community. Your gift will allow a student to attend our job-skills education program. The student will learn specific job skills, receive needed work-related clothing, and learn hands-on from an employer mentor in the community. The opportunity will keep each student focused on a positive life path.

Your gift enables a student with autism spectrum disorder to enroll in special vocational or college courses. The total cost of this program is $10,000 a year for each student, and there are no state or federal programs, nor financial assistance, available to help them. Your gift will be combined with other gifts from generous donors to help students with autism reach their full potential.

Not every student is college bound; some dream of becoming a mechanic, hair stylist, chef or other vocation. There is a big demand for workers with these technical skills. Your gift to UMFS Vocational Education

an income and a career, while providing a valuable service to their

community.
