New donkey arrivals
From Spring till Fall 2012 we’ve had a couple of new arrivals. Sweet Antigoni,
Nefeli and the beautiful Ermioni.
Our first arrival was Antigone. She’s 45 years old and the senior of all the
donkeys. She was a wedding present as a foal and has come to retire to our
Sanctuary. She arrived early May 2012 and we also brought over her friend, the
ram, Bebe.
And then in September, Nefeli arrived. Nefeli’s owner was beating her in a
drunken rage on a daily basis. The owners grandaughter called Marianna to
ask her to come and take the donkey away. When the grandfather was asleep,
they came and rescued the donkey. She had cuts from being whipped and a
deep wound on her right hip. Marianna called the vet and nursed her back to
health again. She is a beautiful, happy donkey again! Nefeli is a small dapple
grey donkey aged around 17 years… Thank you Marianna for the wonderful
care and work.

More new arrivals...
Outreach visit March 2012
And our last arrival is Ermioni. In September we received a call from a young
woman in Eretria mainland Greece. She had found a donkey tied to a tree, left
without food or water. The owner no longer wanted it… After approaching
various equine groups on the mainland who were unable to help, we agreed to
rescue the little donkey who came to us from Piraeus to Iraklion by boat. We
are very grateful to CARAT for all their support and for paying the transport
costs to bring Ermioni to the safety of our Sanctuary...
Every year the equine vets come round and check out our donkeys and the don-
keys from around the area. The donkeys have their teeth rasped and their ho-
oves treated by a professional vet and farrier. Here are some pictures from their
last visit.

Outreach visit October 2012
All of our rescue donkeys will get their 6 monthly health check up, hooves filed
and teeth checked. Our new rescue donkey Ermioni will feel much more comfor-
table after her very long hooves have been treated!! After the team visits our
Sanctuary, we went to the surrounding villages to check the local working don-
keys. We try to inform the locals of these free services and that it is important to
take care of the donkeys. Here are some pictures of our Outreach visit...

Often people know that we care about animals and drop them in boxes in front of our gate. We try to help as
many as we possibly can, but it’s very hard, considering people have no money with the crisis. We are not a
dog Sanctuary...we help homeless, abandoned dogs by arranging sterilisation programs and helping, with the
support of fosters, find forever homes.
We care for many hungry & thirsty barrel– and street dogs in the area but sadly, can’t help them all. Our
grateful thanks to Arche Noah Kreta for their help with food donations. Here are some of the dogs we hel-
ped find their golden basket. Only Ginger is still looking for his forever home
There is honor in being a dog - Aristotle -
Ginger was found by Ma-
ria in May, lying critically
wounded on the roadside
with a very deep cut in his
throat. He is all healed
and still with us now, des-
perately looking for a lo-
ving home. He’s aged
around 10 months, has a
lovely character and walks
very nicely on a lead
now...

Lucky was found wan-
dering the streets of
Timbaki, dazed and
confused. His left eye
was full of maggots.
Lucky was treated im-
mediatly by vets, the
eye removed, socket
cleaned out and stiched
up. He was also neute-
red . For a while we
thought he would beco-
me blind, when his good
eye was all swollen and
full of puss. The vet
found there was a barb
stuck behind the socket
and removed it succes-
sfullly. He found his
forever home with a
loving local family
Two puppies were thrown from a moving car. Lucky
some good hearted people witnessed it and brought
them over to our Sanctuary. The puppies, we have
named them Pepper and Sel, are both in good health
and have no injuries from being thrown from the car.
Pepper has already found her new home. Sel stayed
with us until September. He flew off to Holland to
his forever home
Pixie has been at the
shelter over a year
after being beaten by
her owner for coming
back to find her mo-
ther. She and her si-
blings were dumped
several weeks old.
Pixie finally found her
forever home in Hol-
land and left us in July

In August, this sweet girl
was found near the rubbish
on a busy parking lot. She
was full of ticks and had a
skin condition. After a vet
check up and a couple of
washes and a shave, she
looked a lot better. We
gave her worm treatment
and couldn’t resist that
sweet face. We took her
home and she’s now enjoy-
ing her time with new best
friend Chica. We named
her Coco
While we were at the neutering
day, a boy came and told us
that there was a mother dog
with newborn puppies behind
the corner. We went to have a
look and found the mother with
her ten newborn puppies in the
most appaling conditions. We
took them home and cared for
them until they were big enough
to be adopted. All of them have
found forever homes or a foster
home in Germany. Many
thanks to Thomas & Ines from

Neutering days April 2012
Here are some pictures from the neutering days in our area. We thank all
involved and the wonderful vets who are doing a great job. We try our very
best to help unwanted animals or animals in need, but somethimes we just
don’t have the needs or the place to take them all in. Specially now with the
crisis, there are so much more strays and so few people that care (or are eble
to care financially). Every time the vets come by for a neutering program, we
try to find as many stray dogs as possible to have them neutered. Sadly after
they recover, we have to put them on the streets again. That is why we try
and look for their forever homes throught our website and all the people who
are helping us with our cause through word of mouth. You can always help
us by sending us wormtablets, tick treatment,...so we can at least help them
with the basic care
Neutering Sunday 5th of August 2012
The neutering day was a success. Lots of local people and we found a mother
dog who had just given birth to 10 puppies and took her home. Every time the
vets come by for a neutering program, we try to find as many stray dogs as
possible to have them neutered & inform people in the area and help with
organizing. A big thank you to all the vets for their wonderful work!

Because some of our donkeys are quite shy, we thought it would
be a good idea to have a “Donkey of the Month”. This way, all
of our friends, fans & supporters will get the chance to get to
know ALL the donkeys and not just the greedy & nosy ones ;-)
August was dedicated to our sweet Antigoni. She’s a little don-
key aged 45 years and she was a wedding present as a foal. Sep-
tember was for our handsome Elefteris and in October, Iason is
looking his best ...

We try to update our website as much as possible and have been working on
making a personal page for all our donkeys. Simply by clicking on the donkey’s
name on the “Adopt a donkey” page, you will be directed to their own page with
pictures, information & regular updates.
Also for our fan page on Facebook, we try our best to update our friends & fans
with daily updates, pictures, shares from other interesting pages, beautiful pic-
tures and quotes. We started making our own pictures with quotes, sayings &
jokes so we could bring a smile on someone’s face or to make people stop and
think about it. Most of all, we want our page to be a positive one which is not
always easy with all the horrible things we see. We just try our best and want
to show our supporters that there are still a lot of good people on this earth who
are all doing their very best.
