Refining the Craftsmanship
Johnnie (Jun-ichi) Morikawa
“Sankyo Special Tube Co., Ltd.,” also known as “SST,” celebrated its opening ceremony on March 15th, 2013 as the second subsidiary mill of Sankyo & Co., Ltd. and immediately started operation for seamless stainless steel cold-drawn tubes and pipes. At the beginning, it took time and effort to set the final operation system on its way with the facilities and logistics. However, subsequently the system moved smoothly forward and finally reached the first deliveries from the factory commencing by the end of June 2013.
Shortly thereafter, we succeeded in obtaining classification certificates and other certificates such as ISO9001, TÜV, Lloyd’ s Register and DNV in less than half a year as planned. We also managed to attract exceptionally capable employees because superior processing industry techniques accumulated in the local area. We would also like to thank Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation and former NTKK (Nippon Metal Tube Co., Ltd.) for their technical support as well as Takeo City, Saga Prefecture for their subsidies and administrative technical support.
You may wonder why we decided to open the new factory in the northern extremity of Kyushu Island. There are a few reasons for choosing Takeo City, Saga. Firstly, the strong production foothold needed to be in our own country and not abroad, where international harbor and airport are developed. Secondly, it needed to be a culturally sophisticated place where specific skills and techniques could be accumulated and handed down to the next generations. Lastly, in terms of the Business Continuity Plan, it needed to be safe from disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis or hurricanes – it had to be a place with the necessary infrastructure, high cultural standards and a great education system so people can live comfortably. Therefore it was an ideal location to set up our “Saga Plant” for having this circumstance.
For future development, we are going to cater to a growing demand for offshore development, shale gas development as well as LNG plants as we expect wider applications in these areas. At the same time, we will secure excellent human resources to expand Research and Development function where we have basic research for products applied especially in offshore development. We will continue to strive to supply "Made in Japan" products throughout the world, with high technical reliability and quick-response services that we, Japanese people, have been so proud of.

Remarks1. Working Pressure (psi) is calculated with the formula provided below: Working Pressure (psi) = 2 x Tube Wall Stress (15,000 psi) x WT (mm) / OD (mm)2. Tube Wall Thickness 15,000 psi is applied for TP316/316L grade only (25,000 psi x 0.6).3. For Working Pressure (MPa), please divide Working Pressure (psi) by 145.

Takeo city has ancient customs and a long tradition of superior workmanship. Between 16th century and 17th century, Japanese traditional pottery such as Karatsu, Imari and Arita became famous in the area with its outstanding heat treatment techniques. From the mid-18th century, as the division of labor enabled mass production system, exporting business turned Takeo city into an industrial strongpoint. In the 19th century, as modern medical science and modern technology developed, metallurgy machines and the shipbuilding business expanded. Therefore, Takeo was an ideal location as the domestic production foothold.
