In the beginning of the summer 1989 I participated in a botanical excursion to Estonia and Latvia with the Dept of Botany, Univ. of Stockholm. During the excursion I

collected some 80 mosses and of these the ones reported below are either new to Estonia or Latvia or very rare

there (cf. Kannukene 1986, 1988 for Estonia, Abolina

1968, Laivinsj et al. 1984 for Latvia, Dull 1984, 1985 for

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania together; these refer

ences are not repeated after each species below).

Estonia

Brachythecium turgidum (Hartm.) Kindb. - Kingissepa,

Saaremaa, L?o, 13 June 1989, L. Heden?s E-20, S).

Depression in alvar.; Kingissepa, K?inastu, 15 June

1989, L. Heden?s (E-41, S). Sea shore meadow. -

New

to Estonia (and Latvia, cf. below). This species is com

mon in many parts of northernmost Europe and in the

Scandinavian mountain range. Besides that it has earlier

been known from a few localities in the southern parts of Finland and Sweden (e.g., Nyholm 1965), but not from Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania. In Fig. 1 the finds of

B. turqidum from the Baltic area, which are represented in S (27 collections), are mapped.

Campylium calcareum Crundw. & Nyh. -

Kingissepa,

Saaremaa, Panga Pank, 14 June 1989, L. Heden?s

(E-32, S). Disturbed dolomite soil. - New to Estonia.

Encalypta mutica I. Hag. -

Fig. 1. Distribution of Brachythecium turgidum in the Baltic

area, based on material in S.

Panga Pank, 14 June 1989, L. Heden?s (E-30, herb. L. Heden?s; E-33, S). Disturbed dolomite soil.

- New

to Estonia (cf. also Horton 1983). This species is con sidered threatened in Sweden (Anon. 1988) and has

recently been collected on the Baltic islands ?land

(Anon. 1988) and Gotland (Heden?s 1989) for the first time.

Pottia bryoides (Dicks.) Mitt. -

Kingissepa, Saaremaa,

Panga Pank, 14 June 1989, L. Heden?s (E-34, herb. L.

Heden?s). Disturbed dolomite soil. -

New to Estonia.

Pottia davalliana (Sm.) C. Jens. -

Kingissepa, Saare

maa, Panga Pank, 14 June 1989, L. Heden?s (E-29, herb. L. Heden?s). Disturbed dolomite soil.

- This is

the second find of this species in Estonia (cf. Kannu kene 1988).

Pottia lanceolata (Hedw.) C. M?ll. -

Kingissepa, Saare

maa, Panga Pank, 14 June 1989, L. Heden?s (E-27, S). Disturbed dolomite soil.

- New to Estonia.

Rhynchostegium murale (Hedw.) B. S. & G. - Kingis

sepa, Saaremaa, the Kali Crater, 12 June 1989, L. He

den?s (E-10, S). Small boulder. - This is the first find on the West Estonian islands (cf. Kannukene 1988), but the species is known, though rare, from other parts of

Estonia (Kannukene 1986, and in litt. 1990). It is interesting to note that five of the eight in

teresting finds were made at the locality Panga Pank, where the habitat consists of disturbed dolomite soil just above a large escarpment close to the Baltic Sea.
