Foreword
This list of learning resources identifies high-quality resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to support the curriculum, Mathematics 9. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of
core learning resources can be found on the Ministry of Education website.
(CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. Resources evaluated and recommended as support for the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol frameworks and Saskatchewan’s provincial curricula have the designation (WNCP) before the annotation.
Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support Mathematics 9. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their students, school, and community. Educators should choose these materials in accordance with the school division’s learning resources selection policy.
Pricing of the learning resources contained in this list is subject to change without notice.
Manipulatives are an essential component of an effective mathematics program, leading to the development of deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Included are charts outlining the types of manipulatives needed, the suggested uses, and the suggested quantity (where appropriate). Some manipulatives may be collected; others may be constructed; and many may be purchased. The main distributors for these materials are Exclusive Educational Products at www.exclusiveeducational.ca and Spectrum Nasco Educational Supplies Ltd. at www.spectrumed.com. Please consult these companies’ catalogues for purchasing information.
The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions made by educators who served as evaluators.

All of the AboveAuthor: Pearsall, ShelleyIllustrator: Steptoe, Javaka
AnnotationFour inner-city students decide to build the world’s largest tetrahedron. The story is told through many characters in the story. The four students are Sharice, James, Rhondell, and Marcel. The connector between the students and the community is Mr. Collins, the teacher, who had the idea for the tetrahedron project.
The story is based on a true event. In 2002, four students in Cleveland, Ohio built the world’s largest tetrahedron, using 16 384 tetrahedrons. At the end of the book is an author’s note on the project and a reader’s guide.

ContinuumAuthor: Belanger, Carol
Annotation(CAN) This interdisciplinary resource connects mathematics to the real world using a thematic approach. Each unit is designed to review and introduce mathematical concepts around a particular theme, and culminate in a theme-based project. Some of the other mathematical concepts reviewed in the units are from previous grade level content. The student text includes a table of contents, a glossary, an answer section, and an index.
The teacher’s manual provides instructional notes for each tutorial, reproducible pages, and sample post-tests, as well as holistic generic rubrics.
Note: There is an emphasis on comparing and converting between Imperial and Metric units of measurement.

Mental Math in Junior High: Blackline MastersAuthors: Hope, Jack A., Reys, Barbara J., and Reys, Robert E.
Annotation(CAN, WNCP) This resource presents strategies for teaching mental mathematics. It focuses on more difficult mental calculations with whole numbers. Students learn such techniques as searching for compatibles, tacking on trailing zeros, and front end multiplying. Thirty-six lessons are organized in four units: “The Memory of a Mentalmathlete”, “Doing Several Things at Once”, “Complicated Mental Calculations”, and “An Interesting Number Pattern”. Each lesson contains an introductory page to the new mental mathematics strategy, a power-builder page, two sets of practice problems, and a review page. There is a progress test, with suggestions for administration, at the end of each unit. A cumulative test designed to be used as a pre-test and post-test, and answer keys for all practice sets and tests are also provided. Please note that Imperial measures are used occasionally.

Niktu: A Game of Algebraic ThinkingAuthors: Greenes, Carole and Findell, Caro
AnnotationEach level of this game offers a progressively more advanced review of algebraic concepts within a small group setting. The games allow students to achieve curriculum goals in number sense and logical thinking.
Each playing card contains an algebraic equation with a missing numeral. Players take turns rolling a die and substituting the rolled number for the missing variable. They attempt to solve the equation before the timer runs out. Players compare answers, using their communication skills, and critical and creative thinking to justify and explain their answers. The resulting discussion also provides the teacher with a window into students’ thought processes and level of understanding. Concepts addressed include order of operations, inverse operations, fractional values, and integers. Variations for each game are included.

Of Numbers and Stars: The Story of HypatiaAuthor: Love, D. AnneIllustrator: Paparone, Pam
AnnotationRaised during the fourth century C.E. in Alexandria, Egypt, Hypatia became an authority in mathematics. Hypatia’s father, Theon, believed that she should be educated the same as a boy. Theon was a professor at the university and taught Hypatia all that he knew. Hypatia became fascinated with numbers after watching Theon write number sentences. Other scholars sought Hypatia’s opinions on mathematics, science, or philosophy.
The book includes a bibliography, a brief description of the word “mathematics”, and an author’s note about Hypatia.

Out of the Labyrinth: Setting Mathematics FreeAuthors: Kaplan, Robert and Kaplan, Ellen
AnnotationWritten as a guide for parents and educators, this book argues that math should be taught as the highest form of intellectual play rather than as a step-by-step acquisition of skills and facts. The authors emphasize that math is meant to be explored, and that it does not require special talent or ability.

Teaching Mathematics Through Problem Solving: Grades 6-12Editor: Schoen, Harold L.
AnnotationThis volume and its companion atr professional research-based resources that promote a problem-solving approach to mathematics instruction. This approach engages students in making sense of problematic tasks in which mathematical concepts are embedded. The writers address issues and perspectives related to this approach, provide suggestions to select and use appropriate tasks and learning tools, and provide examples of the use of this approach in various classroom settings.

Thinking Mathematically: Integrating Arithmetic and Algebra in Elementary SchoolAuthors: Carpenter, Thomas P., Franke, Megan Loef, and Levi, Linda
AnnotationThe emphasis of this resource is on teaching for deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Using classroom examples, teachers are shown how to extend students’ thinking in order to help them integrate and connect new knowledge with previous understanding. The authors show how relational thinking, making and representing conjectures, justification, and proof have application in mathematics classrooms. Teacher commentaries provide realistic examples. End-of-chapter challenges offer ideas for problems and activities in class.

A Visual Approach to FunctionsAuthor: Van Dyke, Frances
AnnotationConsisting of individual lessons with blackline masters and teacher notes, this resource introduces linear, exponential, and quadratic functions encountered in algebra. Each chapter features a graph and a series of statements describing a function that are explored prior to the introduction of tables or algebraic notation. Subsequent chapter lessons introduce co-ordinates, quantitative graphs, and tables. To deepen conceptual understanding of a function, the activities emphasize verbal, numeric, visual, and algebraic representation. Ideas for incorporating graphing calculators are included at the end of each chapter.
