    Additional Glossary

    Remember to always put the person first and the difficulty that they

    present afterwards!

    Person........ with a learning disability: term used to describe a person

    with a significant impairment of intellectual and social functioning which

    is present from childhood.

    Profound Multiple Learning Disability : term used to

    describe a person who has a severe learning disability and other

    disabilities, for example a physical or sensory impairment.

    Adocate : a person who defends the rights of a person. Independant

    from services that provide social care. They are expected to create astrong relationship with a person and help the person voice their wishes.

    hild Protection : the term used to describe the principle of ensuring

    that children are not abused or mis-treated. There are very rigorous

    policies and procedures in place in any establishment that works with

    children. There are also policies and procedures for preventing the abuse

    of ulnerable adults (for example a person with a learning disability).

    hild in care : child who is loo"ed afterby the state. There are types

    of children in care, those who are accomodated# that means that theirfamilies have decided that they need the state to intervene, the parents

    still have parental responsibility of their child. The second type of child

    will have a care order! this means that the courts have assessed the

    parents as being unable to have parental responsibility and so the state

    takes responsibility of them. " care order will normally last until a child

    is #$ and occasionally until they are #%. " care order can be reviewed by

    the courts at the re&uest of social services, a parent or child.

    Residency order : only exists in $ngland and is applied for by foster

    carers (carers that are employed to care for children looked after by thestate in their own homes). This shares parental responsibility between the

    foster carers and the childs birth family.

    Leaing are : when a young person stops being looked after by the

    state. 'ith the #% eaving *are "ct this meant that a young person still

    receives help from the state until they are #or + if they are in higher

    education, (at university).

    Residential %upport: used to describe support to help someone where

    they live. Though some large establishments still exist, residential care is

    more likely to be offered in small group homes(a house where a group

    of individuals live together with the support of a team of staff).

    Anti bullying :bullying is the act of regularly intimidating another

    person! this can be through physical violence, verbal abuse, causing

    someone to be socially isolated, calling people names and even ignoring

    people. This is often talked about within schools but research has also

    shown that there is also bullying in establishments for adults with a

    learning disability. Anti bullying is used to describe the actions put into

    place to prevent bullying.
