Adding WMS Aerial Photography to MicroStation V8i

1. Assign a Geographic Coordinate System to the drawing. a. Click Tools>Geographic>Select Geographic Coordinate System.

b. The following dialogue box will appear.

c. Click on From Library.

d. Browse out the appropriate Geographic Coordinate System for the project. The screen captures below show an example of a user browsing out the Dakota County Geographic Coordinate System in the state of Minnesota.

e. Upon selecting the appropriate Geographic Coordinate System, Click>OK. The following dialogue box will appear and should confirm the previously selected Geographic Coordinate System. This dialogue box can be moved off to the side or closed.

2. Create a NEW WMS configuration file within the Raster Manager dialogue box. a. Click on Raster Manager Dialogue box>File>New>WMS…

b. The following dialogue box will appear.

c. In the data filed on the top of the current screen and left of the ‘Servers…’ button, type in the following URL: http://geoint.lmic.state.mn.us/cgi-bin/wms? and press return. Click>Servers…

Note: The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) provides an XML file of available WMS servers as part of their standard MicroStation CADD Standards. The XML file can be imported into this dialog box rather than hand typing server addresses. The MnDOT CADD standards are located at http://www.dot.state.mn.us/caes/cadd/zip/mndot-cdstds-mstn.zip. Once unzipped, the XML file is located at “…/DOT_MICRO/data/MNDOT-WmsServerList.xml”.

d. Left click on the available server in the left portion of the current screen. Verify that the connection status is indicated as ‘connected’ and click>Ok.

e. Browse out the appropriate Map Layers needed for the project. The screen captures below show an example of a user browsing out the 2010 Dakota County color aerial photography in the state of Minnesota.

f. Upon selecting the Map Layers, Click>Add to map. Selected Map Layers should appear in the lower left window in the current screen.

Note: Multiple Map Layers can be added to a single WMS configuration file. Map Layer priorities are assigned in a first in/first out hierarchy so that Map Layers at the top of the list will appear in the back of the drawing.

g. Click>Save and specify the appropriate location for the WMS Configuration file on the server.

3. Attach WMS file within the Raster Manager dialogue box. a. Click on Raster Manager Dialogue box>File>Attach>WMS…

b. Browse out the previously saved WMS Configuration File and click>Open.

c. Verify under the ‘GEOMETRY’ tab that the option for ‘Inherit GeoCS from Model’ is set to ‘Not Inherited’ and Click>Attach.

d. The WMS Aerial Photography should be successfully placed in the drawing per the appropriate Geographic Coordinate System for the project.
