Fractions with the same denominators are called like fractions. When you add and subtract like fractions, the denominator names units being added or subtracted.

How to add like fractions

To add fractions with the same denominators You must 1st add the numerators. Next, usethe same denominator in the sum. Lastly, simplify if needed.

2/5 + 1/5= 3/5

How to subtract like fractions

To subtract like fractions with the same denominatorssubtract the numerators. Use the same denominatorsin the difference.

Example: 3 fifths minus 1 fifth equal= 2 fifths

3/5 - 1/5 = 2/5
