If you or someone you know needs help with an addiction, it can be difficult to know where to start. The Community Counselling Program can provide counselling, support, and guide you through different options that may be available. You can find the program through your local Health and Social Services office or at www.hss.gov.nt.ca.

Community Counselling Program:This program helps people with a variety of challenges including mental health concerns, addictions recovery, and family violence. The program is available in every region of the NWT and is completely free and confidential to all NWT residents. Community Counsellors and Wellness Workers can support people living with addictions by:

• Helping to identify their needs and developing an individualized treatment plan

• Providing referrals or access to additional supports and services to support recovery

• Supporting the development of skills to cope with stress and to prevent relapse

• Educating about communication and problem-solving skills• Building self-confidence and self-esteem• Providing aftercare support

Addictions Recovery Treatment Options:Addictions recovery looks different for every individual and involves a holistic approach that includes basic needs, interpersonal relationships, culture, spirituality, and more. Individuals may take an abstinence-based approach to recovery, focus on harm reduction approaches, or pursue a combination of both over time. Recovery approaches often include one or a combination of the following:

• Community- and land-based programs and services• Individual and/or group counselling • Peer support

• Informal support through family and friends• eMental Health options (e.g., APPS, online programs)• Facility-based addictions treatment

Facility-based addictions treatment programs are centres where participants “live in” for a specified length of time. The NWT has contracts with four treatment facilities in the south. To access these programs, individuals must meet with a Community Counsellor or healthcare professional who will provide support and help identify what program would be the best fit. During treatment, participants receive intensive therapies, individual and group counselling and other services to support a life of recovery.

Contact your Counsellor, Community Wellness Worker, Social Worker, Nurse or Doctor in your community or region for more information.

DetoxIf you are suffering from physical withdrawal side effects and think you need detoxification, visit your local health centre or hospital.
