Sweet sorrows: Are youaddicted to sugar?ADDICTIONS & ANSWERS

Like Be the first of your friends to like this.
Are you addicted to s ugar? Dr. Dave and Bill’s answer to Katie Holmes and Kelly Ripa.
BILL: Our current plague of obesity reminds me of an old New Yorker cartoon. It showeda garden party dowager, sitting at a drug store soda fountain. She’s so well uphols teredthat her rear end droops down over her stool on all sides. While her uniformed chauffeur stands bes ide her, waiting to take her wherever she wants to go, she’s s pooning up anelaborate Banana Supreme Sundae, weeping into the fudge sauce with very bite shetakes.
DR. DAVE: No caption needed. I take it, Bill, your point is—If our addictions end inbringing us no pleasure, only pain, why do we continue them anyway?
BILL: I remember my last drink. Stumbling around Bleecker St. in the Village, a pint of ginin my hand, another in my raincoat pocket. I hope I don’t drink this, I say to myself anddrink it. I hope I don’t buy another I say to myself and buy two. But Dave, I bet there aremore people addicted to candy bars, cookies, fudge sundaes , chocolate brownies –
DR. DAVE: -- in short, to different forms of sugar --
BILL: -- than to booze, pills and/or dope. Why can’t they stop?
DR. DAVE: Americans consum e an average of about ½ cup o f sugar daily, even thoughit’s been linked not only to obesity and hypertension, but also to diabetes, attention andmemory problems, hyperactivity, anxiety, and depression. What you are talking about, Bill,is the very hallmark of addiction: obsess ion and compuls ion.
BILL: But Dave, these are ordinary foods. Advertised to kids on TV. Your mother buysthem in the supermarket. Where do obses sion and compulsion enter?
DAVE: As a recovering drunk, Bill, whose addiction was immediately life-threatening, youseem to have a problem with other addictions, those whos e destructive potential is m orelong-term.
BILL: True, I do resent articles like the ones that track Katie Holmes’s cupcake addiction– substituting Isabelle's Curly Cakes from the Plaza Hotel in New York for Jack DanielsOld #7. Rather than drinking, they say, her regime is to work out even while having those
sugary confections flown to her film set in California.
DR. DAVE: Playing to readership for both gourmet food and weight loss, the gossipcolumnists are really describing the cycle of binging and purging in a pos itive light. Acycle that can evolve right into bulimia.
BILL: But you have to wonder Doc. When I was researching this column about sugar addiction—at first I was impressed w ith Kelly Ripa us ing her celebrity status to speak outabout raising her kids in what she calls "our over-sugared society." Then I see that bymaking sure her kids do a lot of swimm ing to work off the calories, she feels s he iswinning the battle over their sugar addiction!
DR. DAVE: More unconscious support for solving addictive sugar intake with bulimicpurging. Not surprisingly, most bulim ics go on to using laxatives or vomiting because it’seasier than ten laps around the family pool.
BILL: Or daily high-impact dance workouts to a Katie Holmes tape!
DR. DAVE: The point I’d like to make here is m ost people fail to s ee how eating dis orders
work to continue the addiction. The National Institute on Mental Health has pu t together agood solid website for both profess ionals an d the general public to review the dynamicsof eating disorders, how they are assessed and the types of treatment for them.
BILL: And for people who laugh off the idea of sugar being addictive, I have come torespect Dr. Jeffrey Rossman, from Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Mass. His column, "Mind-Body-Mood Advisor ," appears weekly on Rodale.com.
DR. DAVE: These two resources point to the obvious, just as we linked alcohol and

Re diet: Salem Children's Villages take kids who were abused athome, shuffled through foster homes, & diagnosed with problemslike hyperactivity, retardation, hyperkinesis, stunted growth, lack of gross motor coordination, drug abuse, illiteracy, violence, sexualacting-out, recurring infections, tardive dyskinesia, obesity, skinproblems, etc., etc. The main therapies given are to provide a familysetting in a rural area with no tv & to change the kids' diets. Sally was removed from her parents at age 3 due to severe abuse. She went through various foster homes & institutions. She wasdiagnosed as hyperactive & possibly retarded & was on 40 mg Ritalindaily. She had stunted growth & by age 12 hadn't lost her baby teeth;she had gross motor deficits & couldn't do normal exercises, run, or swim . She was uncontrollable without Ritalin. – But when Salem tookher, Ritalin was terminated on her arrival day. Within one week, her activity level se ttled to the norm for her age, with no hyperactivity.Within 3 months, most of her problems were gone. Now she runs, swims, & has im proved intellectually. She also grew 5 inches in 6months to normal s ize.

Most recovering alcholics subs titute a great deal of sugar in earlysobriety. The cookies, ice cream, candy etc, replaces the sugar inalcohol.Sugar can work to a point when you feel hungry, angry, lonelyand or tired. The important thing to remember is not to overdo thesugar. I also see so m any mothers giving their kids packaged fruitdrinks. They are all sugar. Give the child, a piece of fruit but don't
