ConFest is an alternative festival held in the south-eastern states

from combining the words conference and festival. The festival

Founded by Larry Harvey Burning Man is a
week-long annual alternative event which co-
incides with the American Labour Day
holiday. Beginning first on San Francisco’s
Baker Beach in 1986 the festival later moved
to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada and takes
its name from the ritual burning of a large
wooden effigy, set alight on the Saturday
evening. Burning Man is about community
building, art, radical self-expression, and
radical self-reliance. In recent years the
festival has grown to a huge size reflecting its
popularity.
The success of Burning Man has led to a
number of regional and local smaller burns
and amongst them is Kiwiburn held on a site
near Hunterville. With the same principles as
the American Burning Man this regional burn
began in 2004. Now located in the North,
Kiwiburn was in fact born at Nelson, then was
at Whakamaru (near Tokoroa) and since 2014
at Hunterville. Attracting several thousand
people Kiwiburn is one of several
complimentary alternative events, held over
Summer. The description below is based on
that contained in the Kiwiburn website.
So what is Kiwiburn: the key point to make
about Kiwiburn is that it is a participatory
festival, where those attending participate in
the festival, rather than watch. There are no
central stages or headline acts, no queues and
no crowds as such. Just a series of surprises.
Like Burning Man there is a focus on public
art and performance. It is worth noting that
every performance and art piece is there
because somebody has decided to bring it and
put in the effort to make it happen.
It is also a collective experience where everyone
contributes. No one is paid, there are no spectators and what is shared are the passions and dreams of those who gift them. You are part of Kiwiburn rather than attending
it, like a Rainbow Gathering. No money is exchanged at the festival. What operates is rather a gift economy and the festival seeks to encourages co-operative and collaborative social relations not only at the site but also in the wider society. Radical free expression is welcomed.
There is no programme or featured artist list. But there are theme camps and some of these are already registered and this is the case for various art installations. Each festival is different. That is the beauty of KiwiBurn. There will be various kinds of music, art installations and people in costume, neon lights, fire spinners, drummers, random surprises, dancers, free spirits and healers. The Burn itself occurs on the final night. Bring your passion
and share with us your dreams.
In addition to Kiwiburn there are now local burns. The event on Waiheke started in 2010 and takes the name Hekeburn. At the time of writing planning was well underway for 5th event to be held from the 25th to the 27th
of September. [G.D.]

The words above were written by Arthur O’Shaughnessy in 1874, and are from his work entitled Ode.
Ode is a long poem and that commonly cited forms only a small part of it. Incidentally the term Movers
and shakers was first used here. Background photograph: Bosnia rainbow gathering 2007. Wikipedia.

Building community. By Soaringriverbear Always welcome the stranger. Feed your
friends. Give often. Share endlessly. Greet loved ones with hugs. Everyone has value. Learn from those around. Teach those around. Listen. Gifting is a skill that has been forgotten. Remember it. Remember the
little things. Give gifts. Not always on birthdays and holidays. Apologize when you fuck up. Forgive those
who fuck up. Make beds for the traveling friend. A friend of a friend, is always your friend. Respect. Honor.
Courage. Faith. Truth. Know that you deserve respect and love. Settle nothing less than those. Communicate
your appreciation of the people you love to them, often. Be open. Stand open. If they’ve enter your house,
they are guest. Treat them as such. All people are your relatives. Do not forget that without the hard times you
wouldn’t be the complete and wondrous human you are now. Be intentional. Think. Feel. Love. If it will help
someone, do it. Stay up late for a friend. Get up early for a friend. You will have time to sleep, you may miss
the moment a loved needs you of you. Be direct. There is no shame in telling someone how you feel or what
you need, be gentle. Think fast, act slow. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast. Set aside pride. Repair damage.
Balance yourself. If you have and they need it. It belongs to them. Love. Love with everything you have. Give your whole heart. Holding back hurts you more than them. Love. Give your heart. Allow your soul to be seen.
Find the connection between your soul and their’s. Create ceremony. Create passion. Create a way for
everyone to share. Invest in other. Help them create. Open the door for people. Be excited to see those you
love and let them know it. Never leave a negativity. Love. Be honest. Love. Give. Love. Stand open. Love.
