6. Is testing of the asphalt or concrete required? Who is responsible for the testing the stone backfill required to compacted to a certain level, does it need to be measured / tested?

a. Contractor shall perform contractor quality control program for asphalt placement in accordance with Section 315 of VDOT Road and Bridge Specification. Contractor shall provide asphalt density results and asphalt sample to Owner / Engineer. Compaction testing of the stone backfill at the inlets shall not be required; however, Contractor shall properly orient the stone in accordance with Note 3 on Plan Sheet C200.

7. Can the limits of concrete and pavement repair around the inlets and manhole be identified on the plan?

a. The estimated limits of the concrete and pavement repair around inlets have been added to Plan Sheet C100. The Contractor shall be responsible for field verifying and performing their own estimate based on their planned installation / construction methods.

8. If the existing pipe connection to the drop inlets needs to be cut and a new piece of pipe installed to make the connection, is there a preferred tie-in method?

a. The Engineer has no preference provided that the connections are watertight. The contractor may utilize fernco type couplings or grout or other means to ensure a watertight connection.

9. Is flowable fill allowable for backfilling?

a. Yes. 10. Can you clarify where the concrete details “Control Joint” or “Construction Joint” should be used?

a. Control Joints will not be required. The detail for Construction Joints has been revised. Please see revised Plan Sheet C300.

11. Airport will determine if the asphalt millings can be transported to airport lot or if the contractor must dispose of.

a. Contractor will deliver asphalt milling to airport storage site along Thirlane Road. 12. Can tack coat be used in-lieu of grinding or milling of the concrete?

a. Addressed by the detail for Asphalt Overlay of Concrete Rigid Pavement. Please see revised Plan Sheet C300.

AN ASPHALT OVERLAY OF 2" SHALL BE PLACED IN ALL AREAS WHERE ASPHALT CAN BE AN ASPHALT OVERLAY OF 2" SHALL BE PLACED IN ALL AREAS WHERE ASPHALT CAN BE MILLED 2". IN AREAS WHERE ONLY 1.75" TO 2.0" OF ASPHALT IS MILLED PRIOR TO ENCOUNTERING THE CONCRETE IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO REDUCE THE ASPHALT OVERLAY TO 1.75" TO 2.0". IN AREAS WHERE LESS THAN 1.75" OF ASPHALT IS MILLED PRIOR TO ENCOUNTERING THE CONCRETE SLAB, THE CONCRETE SLAB SHALL BE MILLED/GROUND TO ACCEPT THE FULL 2" ASPHALT OVERLAY. A TACK COAT SHALL BE PROVIDED TO ALL EXISTING CONCRETE SURFACES PRIOR TO PLACING THE ASPHALT OVERLAY. 5. THE SURFACE OF THE CONCRETE PAVEMENT SHALL BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED BY SWEEPING THE SURFACE OF THE CONCRETE PAVEMENT SHALL BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED BY SWEEPING OR WASHING. EXISTING CRACKS SHOULD BE CLEANED OUT WITH PRESSURIZED AIR OR OTHER MEANS, AND FILLED WITH CRACK-SEALING MATERIAL. 6. A TACK COAT SHALL BE PLACED ON THE CLEAN AND DRY CONCRETE SURFACE ALONG WITH A TACK COAT SHALL BE PLACED ON THE CLEAN AND DRY CONCRETE SURFACE ALONG WITH AREAS OF UNDERLING ASPHALT COURSE AND THE VERTICAL JOINT TO EXISTING OVERLAY. THE APPLICATION RATE OF AN UNDILUTED EMULSION SHALL BE 0.10 TO 0.13 GALLONS PER SQUARE YARD FOR A 95%+ COVERAGE.
