Overall crime in London is on the decrease. Street crime has

reduced by nine per cent, which is very good news and could

very well be due to the presence o community police in

London. However, the presence o knives and guns in our

communities is on the increase. The ability o police ocers

to stop and search became known as the Sus law which came

rom a part o the Vagrancy Act o 1824 that permitted police to

stop and search and even arrest anyone purely on the basis o

suspicion as a crime preventive initiative.

The law was unpopular with certain sections o the

community who elt they were being targeted. Following the

race riots o the early eighties the Sus law was dropped.

The eect, however, was that the carrying o weapons

increased. The police orce knew this was happening but could

do nothing about it. As a result, serious crime has increased

    year on year.

Gun crime has already increased by nineteen per cent over

the past year. We must nd a way to empower the police orces

    to resolve this problem.

The only way we can start to reduce the carrying o

weapons is or the police orce to be given some remit, which

allows them to stop and search those they suspect o being in

possession o weapons that can kill.

In the past 25 years, the police orce have developed a much

better understanding o community issues and need to work

with these communities to tackle all crime, including what has

become known as 'black on black' crime which is increasing at

    an unacceptable rate.

Being searched at airports and venues is now totally

acceptable and it is now time to consider how this can be rolled

out or a saer, crime-ree London.

BroadeninghorizonsYou may have noticed a new addition to

Londons skyline emerging over the last six

months. The latest phase o the Broadgate Estate

(EC2) is under construction and, when complete,

will oer the largest speculative oce space in

the city. At 165m (540t) high, Broadgate Tower

will be the third tallest building in the City o

London, ater Tower 42 and 30 St Mary Axe.

Adjacent to the tower will be a 13-storey block

    called 201 Bishopsgate.

Between the buildings there are plans or

a public space with shops, bars and caes.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill,

and costing just under 300 million,

the development is constructed over the

    Liverpool Street Station railway line.

    Onsite, the superstructure is nished

as is 50% o the glass and stainless

steel cladding. Pencil in your moving

LIT SHATSThe tower eatures ten high speed double decker

lits manuactured by Kone. These are the rst o their

    kind in the UK.

CrANESThe cranes growtaller as each new foor is built.

Hydraulic liting rams below the arm push the craneupwards and a new mast section is lited in. Later, the

cranes are repositioned on the highest existing levels.

CrOSS brACINgTriangular bracing is used as part o the towers

aesthetics and also prevents structural twisting.

W iping the sweat rom his brow as he

puts the nishing touches to a portion

o his amous Chilli Salt Squid, head

    che Ian Pengelley oozes disarming

condence. Since taking over the kitchen

    o Pan-Asian ber-restaurant, Gilgamesh,

hes won a Tatler Restaurant award and

wowed critics with his culinary prowess.

But his journey to the top hasnt been

plain sailing. In 2005, Pengelley was let

    downtrodden, depressed and broke

when Gordon Ramsay pulled the plug on

    his eponymous restaurant ater just

    ten months. Gordon nally shut

    Pengelleys three days beore Christmas.

Nice timing,Ian grins. I had no cash,

I was depressed, my head was all over

the place. Ater a ew months sulking,

I hit rock bottom. Then I got the call about

Gilgamesh and I knew that i I took it

on, this time Id be doing things my way.

Pengelley rst made his name at E&O, the

    supercool Notting Hill restaurant where

he pioneered signature dishes includingDuck and Watermelon Salad, which he

copied rom a village in Thailand while

touring South East Asia in search o

    culinary inspiration. When Ramsay

approached him to open a restaurant,

he jumped at the chance to have his

name over the door but Pengelleys was

doomed to ailure. Its atal faw seemed

to be a undamental dierence o opinion

between Ian and Gordon about how

things should be run. I didnt t in with

Gordons way o doing things. Id turn up

or work in jeans and fip-fops thats

not what he expected. He wanted a headche whod toe the line. Thats not me.

I wanted that laid back Eastern vibe but

Pengelleys had the look and eel o a

cold, sti ne dining room... my vision

was o something less serious and more

    seductive and exciting.In Gilgamesh

he certainly seems to have ound it. My

cooking is better than ever and with ve

hundred covers a night, I have to be on

the ball. But Gilgamesh is more than good

ood. Its un, buzzy, Londons answer

    to the Buddha Bar.Most importantly,

Pengelley says hes got his mojo back.

Ego is very important in my line o work

and mine had taken a battering. I elt I

had something to prove with Gilgamesh

and although Ive exceeded all my own

expectations, I know I was lucky to have

Weve all done it, havent we? And

i you havent, you will shortly,

    believe me.

There you are, having a perectly

    normal threeway email correspondence

with, say, a colleague in the oce, and

    a business associate rom another

company. Things are going well until

the business associate (who shall now

be reerred to only as Moronic Idiot

Woman) sends your colleague an email

o such proound stupidity that theypass it on to you, just to make you gag.

    And you, immediately enraged (how

dumb is she?!), instantly reply, applying

to Moronic Idiot Woman a variety o

impressive insults and using an even

    more impressive litany o proanities.

Though o course you havent just sent

it to your colleague. You (and I think you

should now start reerring to yoursel

simply as Moronic Idiot Man) have

    accidentally, and irrevocably, sent

it straight to Moronic Idiot Woman.

    Who, understandably, now wants nothing

to do with you. Or the company you workor. In act she and her company want

to start having nothing to do with

    you immediately.

    Happened to you? Happened to

me. Bizarrely, email hasnt quite yet

assumed the importance and gravitas it

ought to have done. Even though it has

    outstripped the competition to become

the most common orm o business

communication, we still tend to treat

it in a fippant, occasionally dismissive

manner. Weird, isnt it how we can be

so casual about a orm o communication

that will soon replace all others?

There are some people who, rather

endearingly, still treat email like regular

    mail, composing letters containing the

ull address and title o the recipientas well as the sender, using the same

convoluted grammar you nd in any

    nineteenth-century correspondence.

I rather like these people, even though

their numbers dwindle by the month.

And then there are Americans, some o

whom treat email with barely disguised

contempt. I remember a ew years ago

when I worked on a Sunday supplement,

a member o our eatures team sending

an especially long email to an inamously

    taciturn Hollywood agent, requesting an

interview and a photo session with one o

his more amous charges. I I rememberrightly, and I think I do, the request ran

to several pages, outlining just what a

superb idea it would be i **** ****** were

to appear on our cover. Not only did it

take the agent over a week to reply, but

the response was also inspiringly curt.

Id worked with Hollywood agents or

years, and knew how dismissive they

could be, but even I was shocked by this

new reply. Just our words: I dont think

so. O course it would have taken her

a little less time to just write No,

but somehow I dont think so possessed

slightly more malice while also implyingthe perect amount o sarcastic disdain

(I could almost hear her say it).

    Most people, however, lie somewhere

between the two on the one hand

treating email like a slightly less ormal

letter, and on the other using it as they

would a phone. Me, I try to condense

    everything into a perect paragraph,

more succinct, but also, who in their right

    mind actually keeps emails?

Well, I do or one, and or the last eight

years have been keeping printed copies

o some o the rudest as well as some

o the most important or amusing ones.

One or two have been rom politicians,

a ew are rom rock stars, several o the

least amusing ones are rom comedians,

while most, naturally, are rom riends. The best are rom journalists, but then

    Id expect them to be.

The thing is, almost every email Ive

kept (and Ive kept about two or three

hundred o them) contains at least one

spelling mistake, even the ones rom

    members o the so-called establishment.

Adjectives turn into bracelets o vowels,

    multisyllabled questions morph into

    extravagant, i nonsensical insults,

and aectionate sign-os all at the

nal hurdle. Yes, Ive had my air share

o pip pips, over and outs, and tally hos.

Ive even had a One day youre the cock othe walk, the next youre a eather duster.

But Ive only ever had one Pasta la

as much inormation as possible, while

being quick and easy to read. I gure i

I cant get everything I need to say into a

our-sentence, then I have no right to be

a journalist in the rst place.

I just wish other people would do the

same, as most o the stu I get is dashed-

o, convoluted and unwieldy, or simply

    unwanted. O course everyone hates

junk email, or spam, and my least

avourite unwanted emails right now arethose change o address group emails

rom people youve never heard o.

    Really? Youre moving? Changing your

    email address? Fascinating. And who

exactly are you? When I get one o these

and theyre always accompanied by that

annoying little red exclamation mark, just

but urgent attention I always eel like

pinging back a reply containing the

words written on my avourite ever New

York T-shirt: You must have mistaken me

or someone who gives a shit.

When email started to becomeubiquitous, there was a rash o pieces

    Hormones:the key

    Forget everything youve ever been

told about weight loss, sayspersonal trainer, Denis Murphy.

    Methods like calorie counting and

cardio might work in the short term but

to keep weight o you need to control

your hormones. Do this, and not only will

you lose weight, you can even target at

    in specic areas.Spot reduction

is the holy grail o weight loss, something

    generally considered to be unachievable

    (despite the many miracle creams

    claiming otherwise). Although most

trainers will vow to help you lower your

BMI or drop a dress size, none worth

their salt would dare to suggest that theymight be able to shit cellulite or get rid

o a pot belly without overall reduction.

    Until now.

can cause unwanted at pockets, which

resist both diet and exercise. He reers

    to post-menopausal women as urther

    testament. Women nd it notoriously

hard to lose weight ater menopause and

its hormones that are to blame.

    Poliquin says that a trained

    Biosignature coach should only need

to measure twelve specic skinolds to

ascertain an individuals hormonal proleand make the necessary diet, exercise

    and supplement recommendations. Some

people have just one problem area, while

    others have several, so recommendations

    may overlap.

I you have excess at around your

belly you almost certainly have an issue

    with cortisol, the stress hormone

    released by your adrenal gland.

You need to balance your blood sugar by

    reducing rened carbohydrates and may

be advised to take Holy Basil to regulate

cortisol production. I you have at on

the back or iliac crest (love handles)you cannot metabolise carbohydrates

and may have a problem circulating

insulin so a lower carb diet made up o

    requent, smaller meals is recommended

along with supplements such as Grape

Seed and Fenugreek to control insulin

levels. Fat around the ribs indicates a

thyroid imbalance; you may benet rom

    Bladderwrack, which contains Iodine,

Zinc and Selenenium to balance the

thyroid. Excess at on the thighs is a sign

o estrogen dominance in women so DIM,

    a supplement derived rom crucierous

vegetables (which have estrogen-detoxingbiochemicals), is suggested. I you have

at around your knees or calves you may

not be secreting enough growth hormone,

which could be aecting your sleep

might help. Everyone is recommended a

    According to Charles, prehistoric man

    consumed large amounts o omega-3s

by eeding on the brains o dead animals

and these are essential or weight loss

and wellbeing. Fat, he says, is not the

enemy. In act, good ats should be eaten

    abundantly. Although dierent people

need to eat dierent things, its usually a

lack o essential nutrients combined with

too many processed oods and carbs thatcauses weight issues, says Denis.

    Excercise wise, Poliquin vehemently

believes that sweating it out on the

treadmill is a mistake. Although it

does strengthen the heart, the body

isnt built or extended periods o

    cardio,says Denis. Interval training

i.e. interspersing slow and ast cycling is

good, but prolonged cardio stimulates the

adrenal glands to food the system with

    cortisol. This causes body-wide stress

response, which, over time can eat away

at muscles, nerves and brain cells.

Weight training is recommended oreveryone. The more muscle you have,

the more eectively you burn at,says

    Denis. The program recommends that

exercise is used in conjunction with the

    diet and supplement recommendations

but according to Denis, in some cases

the diet plan and supplements alone can

yield remarkable results. One o my

clients lost seven pounds in two weeks.

    According to Poliquin balancing your

hormones is much more than a weight

issue. He believes 90% o all disease can

be controlled by regulating your adrenal

glands and pancreas. Skeptics may balkbut Charles is set to teach Biosignature to

    a group o 5,000 doctors this year.

    Charles spent nearly thirty years

    Brown and Ruus Wainwright. During
