RABBI WHITMAN’S MESSAGE Shortly after leaving Egypt, and thinking they were finally safe and free, the Jewish People see Pharaoh’s mighty army coming after them. With the Red Sea blocking their escape, they were deeply afraid, and they cried out to God. Because at this moment, there was no way out, no solution, no future. The magnificent exodus from Egypt was for nothing. But God told them, “Why are you crying to Me? Jump into the water and you will be saved!” Rashi explains God’s message that all they had to do was jump in the water. The water, in fact, was not a barrier, but an opening.
But everyone was understandably afraid. And one man, Nachshon ben Aminadav, jumped in, the waters parted, the Jewish People marched on into freedom, and Pharaoh’s army was destroyed.
We know the story, which we read and celebrate on the seventh day of Pesach. But Nachshon did not know the story. No one at that time imagined such a thing could ever occur.
Rebbitzen Yemimah Mizrachi explains the deeper significance of this event for us, in our lives. All of a sudden, something started happening that no one could believe was happening. It’s splitting, the sea is splitting! Picture yourself there. It’s possible, it’s happening. You take a step, and another step until you finally exit on the other side of the sea. And meanwhile, you leave behind all the sorrow and trouble and enemies. Imagine yourself passing through, not believing what you see. You walk between those transparent walls of water, finding your own path to freedom.
The lesson, explains Rebbitzen Mizrachi, is everyone needs a Splitting of the Sea; in livelihood, in health, in marriage, in private and in national affairs. We must believe it is possible to change and to be changed. It is possible to exit from the other side of the sea.
But as you imagine yourself standing at the edge of the sea, just before the euphoria of its splitting, just before you discover we can find our path to freedom and well-being – just before that – imagine the fear. Imagine what it feels like to hear God say: There is no sea, there is no obstacle – if you jump in!
Would you jump? Because that is the only way to get to the other side – to be willing to do something that is so frightening, so paralyzing, that you must overcome. Because that is the only way you will make it.
Here is a prosaic story, from Sarah Tuttle-Singer. I share it as a metaphor to relate to the experience of the
Splitting of the Sea, and the lesson we can all take from it.
Sarah writes (slightly edited from the original Facebook post): “22 years ago something bad happened to me in a pool, and ever since then, the smell of chlorine literally makes my heart race. It’s my greatest fear in life, the fear of swimming. I would watch my kids splash around in the pool like seals, trusting the water and their bodies, while I would sit near the edge with my heart in my throat. I couldn’t go in.
But last night at the American Colony Hotel, and the moon was a lemon wedge, and ‘my issues’ and I sat outside as moonlight rippled off the edge of this gorgeous pool, and the entire world smelled like orange blossoms, and with zero reservations, and with all my clothes on, I dove in. My heart exploded in my chest, and I could hear every thump of breath ringing in my ears. And it was the best. I lay on my back and floated and a heavy piece of me broke off and floated far away. In my entire life, this was one of the hardest things I have ever done – to choose a new way of being in the world over fear; to change my state of being from someone who was afraid to swim to someone who just gets up and dives in. And I made this decision in exactly the right place and time and the waters were perfect and sweet. When we left Egypt and came to the Red Sea, we had to dive in first – in perfect fear, in perfect love, and in perfect trust – before it could split for us, and we could walk across not just safely but to the Promised Land.”
There are moments in the life of every one of us, when we are confronted by our greatest fear, and we are paralyzed by that fear. Often, we are unable to jump in, and we remain stuck. But sometimes we can summon our inner Nachshon (our inner Sarah) - and jump.
Wishing you and your family a joyous and inspiring Passover, Rabbi Michael Whitman
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The winter months have been hard on us, especially for those who were unable to get away. Finally, our Quebec spring is arriving in one way or another. Passover is quickly approaching. This year, perhaps, we can derive the benefit from the later time it starts on April 19th. Since it is in the middle of the month, I hope we can enjoy some warmer sunny spring days.
Many of us look forward to celebrating this wonderful holiday with our family and friends. It is very special for my wife and me since our son, who is a physician living in Philadelphia, will be coming to join us.
I love Passover because it really connects us as Jews. Hashem, seeing the suffering experienced by slavery in Egypt, enlists Moses to help secure their freedom. The covenant made with Abraham,
Issac, and Jacob is honoured by Hashem. The Seders are especially meaningful. The importance of reading the Haggadah and retelling the story of the exodus from
Egypt is crucial, in that we tell it as if we personally are reliving the journey. What keeps our faith strong in challenging times, is to always remember the bond shared by all Jews that must endure from generation to generation.
My wife and I wish all the members of the ADATH, as well as their families, a wonderful Passover.
I hope to see many of you in shul so we can celebrate this very meaningful time together.
Marvin Rosenblatt, President

CEMETERY CHAIR’S MESSAGE Dear Fellow ADATH Readers,
Here some famous thoughts from Churchill, which shed light on many things we see in life. Please read and enjoy:
Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.
There is nothing that the government can give you that it hasn’t taken from you in the first place.
Fear is a reaction, courage is a decision.
One man with conviction will overwhelm a hundred who have only opinions.
The main vice of Capitalism is the uneven distribution of prosperity. The main vice of Socialism is the even distribution of misery.
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.
You don’t make the poor richer, by making the rich poorer.
Life can be either accepted or changed. If it is not accepted, it should be changed. If it cannot be changed, it should be accepted. Important to know the difference.
Life is fraught with opportunities to keep your mouth shut.
An appeaser is a person who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.

PROGRAMMING MESSAGE
This Pesach, take a hard look at your reflection.
Every year, around this time, I am reminded of Rafiki.
You know Rafiki, he’s the eccentric baboon from The Lion King who serves as the chief adviser and close friend to King Mufasa. Rafiki is the one given the honour of holding the newborn lion prince, Simba, before the rest of the kingdom at the start of the movie.
So, you might wonder - if Passover is the story of our freedom from the slavery of Egypt, why am I bringing up a cartoon monkey?
The truth of the matter is that Judaism is a religion based on memory preservation. Passover is all about the recollection of the many ways G-d protected our people in Egypt. He protected us because He remembered us. He remembered a promise we - as a people - made to him, as well as a promise that He made to us.
We remember our past in order to learn valuable lessons from it. As Rafiki famously shares with Simba, “Oh yes, the past can hurt. But from the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.”
Passover is one of the few holidays that is mostly celebrated inside our homes, rather than at the synagogue. It means that individual families have a lot of leeway to create and maintain their own Passover traditions. I mean, it’s extremely unlikely that any two Seders you attend will be identical.
We may not have any first-hand memories of our great grandparents but we do know exactly what they were doing on the Seder nights 100 years ago. They were eating bitter herbs and Haroset. They were reading from the ancient Haggadah. They were asking the four questions and sitting down to a Seudah in their homes surrounded by family and friends.
When Simba tells Rafiki that Mufasa, his father, is dead, the wise monkey replies by saying: “Correction; I know your father. He’s alive and I’ll show him to you.” Simba then follows Rafiki to the water’s edge, where Simba can see only his reflection. Rafiki instructs him to “look harder - you see, he lives in you.”
The Passover Seder is a night when we pass on the tradition of the Jewish people to our family and to the next generation. We declare that we have roots, that we belong to the same chain that existed all those years in Egypt, and that we are still striving to achieve more than what we are. We do so in the comfort of our own homes, with those who are closest to us by
our sides.
This year, as we read through the Haggadah, it is completely possible that many won't understand everything in it. But, that’s sort of the point. The incomprehensible reading that we do encourages each of us to look harder at our own reflections. Together, surrounded by family and friends, we’ll connect to our past, our futures, and we remember who we are in the great Circle of Life.
Once that is done, we’ll gather once again in shul for the amazing programs we have to offer at ADATH.
From our family to yours, may your cups overflow with health, happiness and prosperity this Pesach. Hakuna Matata.

TRIBUTE FROM THE TOZMAN’S On Shabbat morning, August 25, 2018, ADATH paid tribute to Naomi and Richard Tozman, as they prepared to relocate to Toronto. Here are the remarks Naomi and Richard made in response.
From Naomi
I am grateful for this opportunity to express my “gratefulness.” ADATH has embraced Richard and me in its fold of warmth, acceptance and family. It has given me the opportunity to have a place of spirituality, peace, and silence. I look forward to the quiet of the Amidah on Shabbos, to the calm of the reflection time, and to the prayer of thanks. I look forward to the Rabbi’s speeches for their wisdom, insight and inspiration. I look forward to going up the stairs to the back row to sit with my ”sisters,” some of whom have been there with me for the last 30 years, and some who are newer but beloved just the same. I look forward to the Kiddush not for the food but for the camaraderie, and to watch the babies of yesterday running around or even coming to the Bimah to Daven.
All this I will miss and much, much more. Like our shul events of the past and present. The women’s Bat Mitzvah was certainly a memorable highlight for me. The bazaars, the concerts, the speakers, the movies, the beautifully hosted parties at the Whitman’s. The Rabbi’s special cocktails and the shots of spirits with Marci and other women at Purim. I will miss the laughter, the fun, the comfort of being with such beautiful genuine warm people.
Yes, that’s what I will miss the most. The people. I will miss the wonderful friends who have been at our side through good times and sad. I will miss taking for granted that I’ll see everyone regularly. I’ll miss you all so, so much.
So thank you to the president, executive, and the board for this honor. For making Richard and me feel special, for the group effort to make this event happen, and for the outpouring of affection we’re experiencing. I’m still wondering why we are deserving of being so honoured. Rick and I should be honouring you ADATH folks. We have so many more reasons to thank you.
We wish you all a Shana Tovah, a sweet, happy, and successful year to everyone and to the ADATH synagogue. May it prosper and continue for many generations to come. We’re counting on it!
From Richard
I am humbled that you have chosen Naomi and myself to be honoured here today. We have been members for 30 years. Most of those years I‘ll remember forever. You have all been part of our extended family. I will cherish our warm friendships that we have, after synagogue services I enjoy meeting you all at the Shabbos Kiddush where we usually talk about the events in our lives. We also get to enjoy the delicious food that is prepared and waiting for us.
Being a member of the ADATH has been a wonderful learning experience. For me it was like going back to University. Why, you may ask? This is where I learned to Daven, to follow the service in our Siddur, also where I learned the Trop (or tune) to be able to recite not only my Bar Mitzvah Haftarah but other Haftarot as well. I have to thank all of the clergy for not only teaching me but also for inspiring me to learn more. I am proud to have gained the knowledge, which has allowed me to take on challenges such as today’s Haftorah. I wasn’t perfect but I sure got the satisfaction of completing the first part of this week’s Haftorah.
For all the good things, the knowledge that I acquired, the friendships, the great times here at ADATH, I should be honouring you for everything you have given to Naomi and myself.
We miss you, Naomi and Richard, and we will never forget you. Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy Passover!

Nathan Skolnik Nathan is a very deep and intellectual boy His dream is to become an architect. He is very concerned about the health of our planet. Nathan has deep empathy, he always cares about other people. When his teacher asked all her students what is most important to them, most of them answered their phone or their PlayStation. Morning & Evening Daf Yomi Daf Yomi (Page a Day Talmud Study) is the schedule of studying a page of Talmud a day. All over the world, thousands of Jews each day study the same page of Talmud, thus connecting them in their pursuit of Torah knowledge. The Talmud is the main repository of Jewish learning and, using the Daf Yomi cycle, can be completed in about seven and a half years. This is a great opportunity to delve into the heart of Jewish learning, and get your day started with intellectual and spiritual vigor. No previous knowledge is necessary, and you can attend every day or once in a while. We offer Daf Yomi every morning and evening. Please see our weekly newsletter for exact times.

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE April, 2019 Dear ADATH Member, One of the most enduring traditions of Judaism is honouring our families. The Torah calls us to honour our families during their lives and to remember them when they are no longer with us. Our Sisterhood is once again planning to publish a “Book of Remembrance 5780” to be used for Yizkor Services during Yom Kippur, as well as during all other Yizkor Services throughout the year. Recalling the memories of our loved ones is both an act of solemn piety and an expression of profound respect. In this memorial publication, you will have the opportunity of honouring the memories of your loved ones. Please enter the names(s) of those you wish to be included in our “Book of Remembrance” below and return to the synagogue, along with your donation. Sincerely, TEAM Sisterhood “Book of Remembrance” Deadline for Submission: June 30th Donor Name(s): _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ In memory of: English name Hebrew name

SALE OF CHOMETZ - 5779 Adath Israel Poale Zedek Anshei Ozeroff Not only may we not eat Chometz on Pesach, it may not even be in our possession during the Holiday. The most simple solution is to eat or give away any Chometz you may have as Pesach approaches. I will be happy to take any food you have and give it to the non-Jewish needy. That which we find during the ‘Bedikas Chometz’ (Search for Chometz), we burn before Pesach. If you wish to keep certain Chometz items for after Pesach, it is possible to do so by selling them to a non-Jew for the week of Pesach. You may contact Assistant Rabbi Alex Zwiebel to act as your agent to arrange this sale for you. When you do so, it is important to remember that you are selling your Chometz for that week - it does not belong to you and the non-Jew to whom it is sold has the right to come and take it (and pay you for it). All sold items should be put in an area that can be closed off, taped shut, and clearly labeled ‘sold.’ With the sale of the Chometz, you are also leasing to the non-Jew the property on which the Chometz sits. Therefore, you have to tell Rabbi Alex where the Chometz is located. You must arrange for the sale of your Chometz no later than 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 18, 2019. Preferably, you should contact Rabbi Alex in person with the form below filled out. However, if you are unable to do so, you may fill out the form below and send it to the ADATH office (but confirm we have received it by Thursday, April 18, 2019) by mail (223 Harrow Cr. Hampstead, QC H3X 3X7), fax (514-482-6216), or email ([email protected]). Rabbi Michael Whitman Date: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Name(s) and Telephone Number(s): __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Email: _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Address(es): ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Main Location(s) of Chometz:_________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (Chometz in other locations is also sold.) Where do you plan to be during Passover? __________________________________________________________________________________________ I give full power to Assistant Rabbi Alex Zwiebel to sell and transfer all legal title of all items owned by me (excluding that which I will use or burn before Pesach) - knowingly or unknowingly - which are, or may contain Chometz according to Jewish law and/or Tradition, and which the Mishnah Brurah, compiled by the Chofetz Chaim, describes as items which a Jew may not own during Pesach*, to anyone of his choice and in any manner which he deems necessary. I also authorize Rabbi Alex to lease any property where this Chometz is located. I also authorize Rabbi Alex to receive the buyer’s deposit and to appoint a substitute in his stead if he wishes, with full power to sell and lease as described above. This sale is valid according to Jewish and secular law. The present document has been written in the English language at the express request of the parties. Le présent document a été rédigé en langue anglaise à la demande expresse des parties. Signature (include signatures of spouse and adult children if applicable): _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ *Including but not limited to: all products made of barley, oats, wheat, rye, or spelt, and all products containing any mixture or derivative of these grains; all items prepared together with those mentioned above; all particles of the above that may adhere to the surfaces of utensils; and all items concerning which there exists an unresolvable doubt about whether they fall into the above categories
