From the President On Tuesday February 26, 2013, the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federa-tion accepted, with regret, the resignation of our Executive Director, Olga Yorish. Olga’s last date in New Bedford is March 12, 2013. Beginning in April 2013, Olga will start her new job as the Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of
Greater Orlando, Florida. This is a significant opportunity for Olga in both her career advancement and in her ability to make further contributions to the Jewish people. Olga’s work in New Bedford has improved the lives of members of our Jewish community and of the community as a whole. Her dedication and loyalty to the Jewish people at home, in Israel, and around the world is exemplary. We are thankful that she has led our Federation over the past five years and wish her much success on her new journey. To ensure the continuity of Federation services and pro-grams, the Board has unanimously appointed Ellen Hull, VP and Campaign Chair, to become the Interim Executive Director effective March 12 and through June 30, 2012. Ellen worked with Olga in the past couple of weeks to en-sure a smooth and efficient transition and the continuity of Federation operations. I can assure the Jewish communi-

New Bedford Welcomes Native Son at Campaign Kick-off Event
On November 26, 2012 the Jewish Federation kicked off its 2013 Annual Campaign with a Pacesetters reception at the home of Lillian Shwartz. The speaker for the evening was New Bedford native Jeffrey Savit, the son of Sybil and the late Herb Savit. Jeffrey, who is in his third year as President and CEO of the Rhode Island Jewish Alliance, was welcomed back to the New Bedford community by both family and friends at this very upbeat and informative evening. Jeffrey used the opportunity to discuss his jour-ney from a practicing attorney to Federation CEO, a jour-ney that started with his commitment as a volunteer both in the Jewish and secular communities in which he lived. He spoke of going back to school, rediscovering his Jew-ish roots and of a desire to help that in need and how he is doing it now through his position in neighboring Rhode Island. He discussed the burning issues that the Rhode Island Jewish community has been addressing, many of the same issues that are relevant to us here in the Greater New Bedford area. It was a very uplifting and enjoyable evening with many of those in attendance making their pledges to give a good start to our 2013 campaign.

I am confident that Ellen Hull is a perfect choice to shep-herd the Federation through this transition. Born and bred in New Bedford, Ellen Hull is the third generation of the Finger family involved in the Jewish and general communities in various leadership roles. Her late mother Rubye Finger had served as Federation president and had been very involved with elderly services and other communal issues. Ellen has received her BS in Education from GW University and MEd in community planning from Boston University. After spend-ing 26 years at the family business, Fiber Leather Manufac-turing, Ellen returned to public sector and worked as a case manager at Coastline Elderly Services, Inc. for the past seven years. Ellen has served as a Board member for more than a decade and as VP for Campaign for the last two years. She has also served on the boards of Tifereth Israel Congregation and the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. “I am very honored to have been asked to serve as interim executive director of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford, an organization that is close to my heart and fills a great need in the community,” said Ellen Hull. “I am looking forward to working with the Board to continue serving the Jewish community in my new capacity.”

Beginning in January 2013, the Jewish Federation has partnered with Coastline Elderly Services, Inc. (CESI) to pro-vide outreach to the Jewish elderly and disabled persons living throughout the city of New Bedford and its surrounding towns.
The new program is a brain child of the Jewish Family Services and its chair Ruth Glicksman who have been concerned about the well-being of the homebound elderly and disabled members of the Jewish com-munity. Coastline Elderly was a logical ad-dress to bring these concerns to as it pos-sesses valuable knowledge of programs and services that allow individuals to con-tinue living independently in their own homes. With the help of a grant from the Jewish Federation, CESI has hired and trained an outreach worker, Ana Giovannini, known at Coastline as Ana G, who will be exclusively responsible for providing proactive outreach in the Jewish community.

Unlike in the traditional health services model where indi-viduals seek out programs and services, the community health worker model sends individuals out into the com-
munity to actively provide individuals with out-reach and education and effectively bring ser-vices and programs to them. According to Ruth Glicksman, “Ana G will be our eyes and ears in the community. She will act as a liaison be-tween the Jewish Federation, Coastline Elderly Services, hospitals and nursing homes, the Rabbis, family members, and the elderly and disabled persons, to ensure the continuity of services and access to all available programs and resources in the community. It is our hope that together, the Jewish Federation and CESI will be able to bring essential services to indi-viduals to help them continue living independ-
ently in their homes.” “We are very excited about this new partnership,” said Paula Shiner, the CEO of Coastline Eld-erly Services, Inc., “We think that it may become a suc-cessful model of other community-based outreach pro-grams.”.

Hanukkah Fun at Autumn Glen

It has become a good tradition for the Jewish Family Services committee to collaborate with Autumn Glen As-sisted Living on enriching the lives of its residents. “It is a part of our outreach to the elderly program,” said Ruth Glicksman. On December 12, 2012, Jewish Family Ser-vices volunteers Joan Farrow, Cindy Yoken, and Liz Ac-kerman were joined by Ziskind school students Ben Ac-kerman and David Bacdayan in celebrating the festival of lights with Autumn Glen residents and staff. Olga Yorish, Federation executive director, opened the party by telling the story of Hanukah. In the meantime, the volunteers, assisted by activities director Gale Williams and her staff, had prepared everything necessary for baking strudel. Equipped with dough and filling, each resident shaped several pieces of pastry. While they were baking, the seniors, assisted by volunteers, decorated colorful and sparkling Hanukkah greeting cards, using stickers, spar-kling glue, and other decorations. Freshly baked pastries were then enjoyed by all. “Thank you for the wonderful Hanukah program you celebrated with our resident at Autumn Glen. Our residents, staff and families were talk-ing about it for days. The warm feelings and comfort you bring to our community are greatly appreciated and I know our residents look forward to your next visit,” said Gale Williams. Southern Germany and Southern France, his unit arrived at Dachau in April 1945, about an hour after the first troops entered the camp.
According to Cindy Yoken who interviewed Nate about his wartime experiences, “The American sol-diers were on a two-lane road, and, as they were going along, they suddenly saw ghost-like fig-ures in striped uniforms, screaming on both sides of the road. The soldiers learned that they were Polish prisoners who were alive, albeit hardly healthy; however, as soon as the gates in Dachau were opened, they left the camp. Nate, then, was only 19 years old, and he was looking at car-l o a d s o f skeletons and pits full of bodies. He didn’t know the extent of what the Na-zis had done, but he was there with his unit for about an hour or two, at Dachau, 12 miles outside of Munich. Nate was always very modest about his army experience, but it is most apparent that his service to our country was a major one, and we should recognize and remember that he helped to liberate one of the camps.” Nate Barry’s interview has been preserved at the UMass Dartmouth Jewish archives, and his photo is displayed at the Fort Rodman Military Museum.
It is very fitting to describe Nate by quoting Tom Brokaw: "It is, I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced… These men and women fought not for fame and recognition, but be-cause it was the right thing to do…Came out of the Depression with all that economic deprivation, went beyond their own shores to help save the world from fascism, came back, rebuilt their enemies, built the country that we have today, married in record numbers, went to college in record numbers, kept their values, never whined, never whimpered.”
A Tribute to Nate Barry
The Jewish Federation mourns the passing of Nate Barry on Thursday Febru-ary 14, 2013. Nate Barry was a past Fed-eration president and in recent years has twice served as campaign chair. He was a staunch supporter of Israel and the Jew-ish community. His passing is a tremen-dous loss to the New Bedford Jewish community.
As a true member of the Greatest Gen-eration, Nate had proudly served his country during WWII. He was drafted in 1943 when he was 18 years old, and landed on Omaha Beach in July 1944, a few weeks after the D-day invasion in Normandy. After several months with the Seventh Army fighting the Germans in
