SITE ANALYSISSWORDS LOCATION AND CONTEXT

St. Colmcille’s well is on Wells road, off the Main street, SwordsSt. Columba’s round tower is located west of Main street, it was built in the 14th century

Swords origins date back to 560 AD when it was founded by Saint Colm-cille (521–567). The most ubiquitous landscape indicators of Early Chris-tian Settlement are the ecclesiastical enclosures. In Swords case the street pattern has been influenced by the circular alignment of the set-tlement. The medieval town developed in a linear pattern along the Main Street in a north – south axis.. Swords has one of the best examples of this settlement pattern in the Dublin region.

In 1994, Swords became the county seat of the new county of Fingal after the breakup of the former County Dublin; in 2001, it also became the ad-ministrative centre for Fingal.

Fingal County Council’s Strategic Vision for Swords is to create a sustain-able new city. They have referred to Swords as an “emerging city” and project that the population of Swords will rise towards 100,000 by the year 2035. The town is the seventh largest urban area in the country, and the second largest in County Dublin.

The Swords area has direct links to the national road network (M1 and M50) and is located on the Dublin/Belfast economic corridor. It is also located proximate to Dublin Port via the Port Tunnel, and to Dublin Airport via the M1, two of the most important infrastructural assets in the Ireland

creates more space for other activities.

• The car is a guest in the area.

• Functional ambiance that focuses on key elements to create a neighbourhood where the balance of infrastructure and lingering pedestrian space go hand in

hand.

• Creating a better balance between vehicular traffic and

other road users.

• To develop more interesting places where residents can

relax, with landscaping, plantng and seating.

• The idea is to create pleasant and safer streets

• The social aspect is connected to creating spaces for
