QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Adapted Sports Day @JMU Adapted Sports Day is a free event designed to expose middle school and high school students with disabilities to a college campus, using sport as a tool for empowerment. Youth with ANY disability (those who are ambulatory, use a manual wheelchair, or use a power wheelchair) will experience an introduction to soccer skills through interaction with JMU students who will serve as mentors. The participants will also get the opportunity to try a challenger/ropes course during the event as well. The goal of Adapted Sports Day is to empower youth with disabilities that new challenges—such as playing a sport or even college attendance—are possible to overcome. Adapted Sports Day FAQs When is it? The 2014 Adapted Sports Day at JMU will be held Saturday, October 25 on the James Madison University campus in Harrisonburg, VA. There will also be an optional meet-and-greet (pizza party) and JMU women’s soccer game on Friday, October 24 (with the opportunity to play on the field and get autographs afterwards). How much does it cost? Adapted Sports Day is FREE for participants (transportation to campus and lodging not included). Who can participate? All middle school, high school, and college-ready students with ANY type of disability are invited to participate. Students may be ambulatory, use walking aides, use manual wheelchairs, or use power wheelchairs. What should each participant bring? Each participant should bring the medical release form completed and signed by a parent or guardian. All equipment will be provided. Why should I encourage my child to attend? Adapted Sports Day uses sport to empower youth with disabilities and show them what is possible. More specifically, Adapted Sports Day aims to show youth that college is a realistic possibility. How can I register my child? E-mail Sarah Miller at [email protected] with the completed Participant Form or Call 571-528-0306.
