He lives in a magical land known as Normandy, where one can still feel the presence of the great writers who once lived there: Corneille, Maupassant, Flaubert and Hugo, and one can gaze upon the scenery that inspired the impressionism of Monet, Renoir and Sisley. It is a land rich in history, from Joan of Arc to General De Gaulle and a land of fields and livestock, wheat and apples. A wild land of parks and forests, beaches

and countryside, cliff sides and castles, lime trees and lagoons. It is a land for gourmets, with Camembert, and roast meat, crepes and the aroma of Calvados.Over the last 25 years the English painter Adam Birtwistle has made his home in the heart of this joyful tapestry. Birtwistle was born in Eton, and is nowadays considered to be one of the leading portrait painters in Europe.

The painter lives in an old house with his three sons Cecil, Alix and Abel and two dogs Lilu and Wanda. Their home is half farmhouse and half barn, and has been converted with taste and moderation. His career began almost by chance. After completing his studies in painting and ceramics at the Chelsea School of Art and working at the Arch Bronze Foundry in London, he moved back to his parent’s house and happened to paint a portrait of his father in his spare time.Other great musicians and theatrical actors,

friends of his father, began to queue up to have their portraits done by the young artist, and in just ten years Adam had gained international acclaim and two of his portraits had been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in London. Over the years his distinctive style has captured the likeness of numerous contemporary stars, including Jeremy Irons, Pierre Boulez, Alfred Brendel, David Hockney and Elvis Costello as well as historical figures such as Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi and Churchill.

Life is simple. The poetry of little things. The portrait of genius.

He is a free and inspired man, a lover of fine food and cooking. He is always happy to throw together a dinner for his son’s friends or all the visitors who come to see him. Adam Birtwistle is a real painter, in the classical mould. He loves to paint animals and landscapes, still-lifes and lively faces. In the long months he has lived in his tranquil Normandy farm, he has drawn inspiration from the variety of daily life which surrounds him: a vase of jam, a basket of vegetables, the dog or the pig in his neighbour’s yard.On the evening of the photo shoot, Matthias Parillaud, who has known the painter for over ten years, was invited to stay to the dinner the artist had prepared for some of his composer friends who had just arrived from London (spiced leg of lamb with potatoes, Saint-Emilion wine, local fruits and, naturally, a glass of Calvados).

This is his life, these are the photos. It is still life, no fictions. Everything sleeps and everything breathes in the house of the artist, who holds giant flowers taken from the Normandy forest in his arms, and in the kitchen offers candied Angelica flowers.

RITRATTO D’ARTISTA
