My Scholarship by Cindy Hitchcock

This year, I was fortunate enough to be awarded an ADA scholarship to train with my mare, Daralinde. I chose to travel to Moorpark, CA to train with Hilda Gurney for ten days at her Keenridge facility. Hilda is a dressage competitor, trainer, instructor, breeder and international judge. Her U.S. dressage record includes an Olympic team bronze medal, an individual gold and silver and three team gold medals at the Pan Am Games, 6 USET National Grand Prix Championships and 15 USDF Horse of the Year titles.

Day one consisted of an evaluation of my riding skills and Daralinde’s level of training. We received some wonderful compliments, but Hilda was also quick to find our weakness within the first ten minutes of our evaluation. After the ride, we decided what we would work on for the next seven days worth of lessons.

I felt that Hilda’s main goals during our training were to improve the lateral suppleness at the canter and develop more of a through, collected canter. Also, to teach me to follow the horses’ motion more with my elbows and hands without locking up,

which I tend to do. Each day, we started by warming up slightly deep at the walk, trot and canter on bending lines only. Hilda said that curved muscles are muscles that are warming up. Daralinde likes to “jig” from a free walk to a collected walk, so we also worked on halting every time she started to jig before going to the collected walk. Hilda told me that I should be working on the jigging problem on every break. I was also told that for now, no more half steps from the walk (it’s contributing to the jigging).

After warm up, we worked on canter-walk, walk-canter. Lifting my hands slightly for the canter walk helped Daralinde balance herself a little better and also smoothed out the collected canter. Then on to the bending exercises at the canter, which consisted of travers, renvers, leg yields to quarter-line and back, half pass to centerline, shoulder in, shallow loop and counter canter half the arena. During these exercises I was told to loosen my elbows and wrists and follow the horse’s motion. I was also told to shorten the snaffle rein in the collected canter, which was hard for me because this seems to move my position forward a little. All of these exercises helped Daralinde’s suppleness. We finished each day with the trot lateral and extended trot work. This work is easier for Daralinde and I, so we did not spend a lot of time on trot work. Each night, I would go home and watch my video and review my notes. Even though I do not like to watch myself on video, it helped a lot!

During our stay, Keenridge hosted an Oldenburg inspection. Even though I had participated in one in the past, attending this one was also a great educational opportunity. We also watched quite a few lessons Hilda was teaching each day before our lesson.

For the last two lessons, I asked Hilda to start Daralinde. It was educational for me to watch her ride and demonstrate some of the movements we had practiced with a following elbow, good seat, leg position and loose wrist.

During our stay in Moorpark, we also attended two shows that Hilda and her students were showing in. I met one of the judges I had ridden for in the past and got to hear some of her critique from the sidelines also. On a side note, we noticed that they were waving the jackets at 75 degrees! Brrrrr!

Some great tidbits that Hilda said; slow down, don’t chase the horse. Let the rising trot come from the horse

and don’t initiate it, tap at the girth for impulsion and tap at the hock for half steps, follow the horses motion with your elbows, sit back and down, keep the contact so the horse doesn’t break gait.

This trip was a wonderful and intense education for Daralinde and

I. Thank you to the ADA and the Scholarship committee for allowing me

this opportunity.

Making Your Application

The Best It Can Be: Tips from

The Dressage Foundation’s Selection Committee

Members and Staff

Each year, The Dressage Foundation receives hundreds of grant applications. It is always difficult for our Selection Committees to choose the best candidates for each funding opportunity. How can you stand out from the rest?

We’ve put together some guidelines and tips for you to consider, in order to help you make your application be as competitive as possible. While we can’t guarantee that any one individual will receive financial assistance, since the final decision is always in the hands of our independent Selection Committees, we can offer some suggestions.

1. Begin the process early. With work, school, riding, and family obligations, finding the time to devote to the application process can be difficult. If you feel rushed, you will skim over important details in the application. Incomplete or incorrect applications are not sent to the Selection Committee for review, so be sure to give yourself enough time to gather all required parts of the application and double (or triple!) check to make sure that everything is included before you submit your application.

Allow enough time for your application to reach our office. If the deadline is September 15th, that means that your application MUST reach our office on or before September 15th. There are no exceptions to this rule. The earlier you start the process, the more relaxed you will be, the more your application will follow the format required, provide all necessary information, and allow you time to call with any questions.

2. Read all information before beginning the application process. Remember to do this every year as requirements may change from year to year. If the instructions say to submit your application online, do so. If the instructions say to mail a certain number of copies to our office, then proceed in that way.

3. Consider the funding opportunities. What are your goals? How do your goals fit with the grant or scholarship that interests you? Sometimes it is easy to “stretch” the interpretation of a program or fund’s stated purpose to match what you want to do. Be aware that other applicants will take a more literal approach and those that most closely match the stated purpose of the fund will score better with the Selection Committee.

Do you meet the criteria as stated by The Dressage Foundation? What is the amount of the financial assistance available from the Foundation? Is your application appropriate?

Also consider what other assistance is available to you. Does your GMO or dressage club offer scholarships?

4. Review your application. Proofread for grammar and typos, as these can make even the best application look as if it was thrown together at the last minute. If possible, have someone else read through your application. Consider how it will look to someone on the Selection Committee. If you were on the Committee, how would you score the application? Take a close look at the requirements. Do you meet or exceed all the requirements? Do you “somewhat” meet the requirements? Are there areas where you do not meet the requirements? If so, you may want to work on those areas and wait a year to apply for the grant or scholarship.

5. Closely review your budget. Do the numbers add up correctly? Have you included all expenses and income? Double-check your math and explain any areas that may be unclear to the Selection Committee.

6. Keep a copy for yourself. Before submitting your application, be sure to print or otherwise keep a copy for your records. You will not receive your application back after the selection process.

Now that you’ve made sure that your application will be a contender, how do you make it rise to the top?

Our Selection Committee members are busy people. They don’t have time to read a book about each applicant, so keep your application simple and relevant. Answer the questions completely, but keep the information pertinent to the question (don’t go off on a tangent, telling a long story that wanders away from the point of the question).

Make sure the information clearly and concisely illustrates WHY you are the best candidate for this grant or scholarship.

Feel free to call the TDF office at 402-434-8585 if you have questions, we are here to help!

Good luck!The Dressage Foundation • 1314 ‘O’ Street, Suite 305 • Lincoln, NE 68508

ADA FUTURITY – SPRING CELEBRATION SHOW

RULES AND REGULATIONS

ELIGIBILITY 1. All horses entered must be four, five or six years old when competing in the Futurity. 2. All horse owners and riders must be current ADA members for nomination and when competing in the Futurity. 3. Horses may not have competed in First Level prior to opening nomination date of October 1st or before any late nomination.

Horses may not compete above First Level until after the Futurity. First Level tests include Young Horse, Para Equestrian and Eventing tests as they are listed in USEF rule DR119 as First Level tests. As an exception, ADA allows competing in USEF and FEI Four-Year-Old tests prior to competing in the Futurity.

NOMINATION FEES: Fees must be postmarked no later than: § October 1st to nominate horse…………. $ 60.00

(Accompanied by copy of papers with proof of age) § March 1st to stay eligible……………….. $ 40.00 § TOTAL NOMINATION FEE……………….. $100.00

A horse may be entered after October 1st at any time prior to the Futurity. However, any payment due up to that point must be doubled. Fees must be received or postmarked on or before the due date. Failure to make a payment by the due date will result in all previous payments being forfeited (i.e., No Refunds of previous payments). Owners must enter their horses in the Futurity Classes at ADA’s Spring Celebration Show (First Level Tests 1 and 2) and pay the entry fees for these classes separately.

AWARDS AND PURSE DISTRIBUTION Open Division and Amateur/JRYR Division each have a guaranteed added purse of $300.00 donated by ADA.

Horses are ridden in First Level Tests 1 and 2. Winner will be determined by the highest total average percentage score from all judges on the two tests. The Open winner receives the Risinger Futurity Perpetual Trophy plus trophy for new division. Ribbons are awarded through 6th place. All nomination fees go into the purse per division and are divided as follows: 1st –35%;; 2nd –20%;; 3rd –15%;; 4th – 13%;; 5th –10%;; and 6th-7%, with checks distributed no later than 30 days after the show.

CHAIRMAN: Janet Solanik, 10017 E. Mtn. View #2041, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. (480)-391-2049;; [email protected] RULES: 1. To be judged on all-around ability of horse and rider in First Level Tests 1 and 2, highest total average percentage

(all four % scores) to win. 2. No limit to number of nominations. 3. Owner and rider must be current members of ADA at the time of nomination and time of competition. 4. Change of ownership does not void a nomination, but the new owner must be a current member of ADA and the Futurity

Chairman must be notified of any change in Ownership. 5. The ADA Futurity Chairman reserves the right to cancel this Futurity for any reason deemed necessary (with approval of the ADA

Board) and all fees will be refunded, less $5.00 per nomination). 6. All nomination fees (except in case Rule 5) will go into the purse. The purse for each division is a combination $300 donated by

ADA plus the nomination fees collected for each division. The prize money distribution is determined by the number of finalists in each division.

7. Trophies, ribbons and office fees will be sponsored. 8. Copy of registration papers or a veterinarian’s proof of age must be submitted with the first payment to Futurity. 9. No refund of nomination fees after October 10th. 10. Rider must be declared by owner on final nomination date of March 1st. Nominations close on March 1st.

No changes after March 1st;; NO EXCEPTIONS. 11. The Futurity is held during the ADA Spring Celebration Show. Futurity scores do not count toward other special and

perpetual trophy awards. 12. Tests may be studied at the end of the first day of the competition, but will be retained by the Show Secretary until completion of

the Futurity Awards Presentation. Tests will be returned after the Awards ceremony. 13. Each Futurity entry must pay Show Class Fees (First Level Test 1 and First Level Test 2) at the Spring Celebration Show over

and above any and all other Futurity nomination payments. 14. Horses and riders must be present at the Futurity Awards Ceremony to receive awards and prizes. Failure, without prior

permission of the competition manager, to be present and properly attired will eliminate the official score and placing, and the next highest score will move up. If Awards Ceremonies are scheduled in conflict with a competitor’s/horse’s preparation or scheduled ride, the competitor and/or horse will be excused from the Awards Ceremony with permission of the Show Manager. Requests to be excused from the awards ceremony must occur by end of the show day Saturday before the scheduled ceremony Sunday, except in the case of an emergency. Horse leg wraps may be white or black, but are not required. The schedule and location for the Awards Ceremony will be posted in the show secretary’s office by noon on Saturday. Checks will be delivered to the Owner/Lessee no later than 30 days after the Competition.

Get to know the rulesDR111 Work on Two Tracks and The Lateral Movements

2. Work on two tracks.

a. The aim of movements on two tracks is:

1. To improve the obedience of the horse to the cooperative aids of the rider;

2. To supple all parts of the horse thereby increasing the freedom of his shoulders and the suppleness of his quarters as well as the elasticity of the bond connecting the mouth, the poll, the neck, the back and the haunches;

3. To improve the cadence and bring the balance and gaits into harmony;

b. Leg-yielding. The horse is almost straight, except for a slight flexion at the poll away from the direction in which he moves, so that the rider is just able to see the eyebrow and nostril on the inside. The inside legs pass and cross in front of the outside legs. Leg-yielding should be included in the training of the horse before he is ready for collected work. Later on, together with the more advanced movement shoulder-in, it is the best means of making a horse supple, loose and unconstrained for the benefit of the freedom, elasticity and regularity of his gaits and the harmony, lightness and ease of his movements. Leg-yielding can be performed on the diagonal in which case the horse should be as close as possible parallel to the long sides of the arena although the forehand should be slightly in advance of the quarters. It can also be performed along the wall in which case the horse should be at an angle of about 35 degrees to the direction in which the horse is moving.

22 | THE CENTERLINE | OCTOBER 2015

Barn Tip:For Competitors and Volunteers Wearing White Breeches or White

Jeans ... How to Keep Your Whites White!

Before the show:Try Scotchgard spray for fabrics to help the breeches stay clean and white. Do

NOT spray the seat area or you may slip-slide right off the horse.

At the show:Keep the white breeches covered with a warm-up pant, a sweat pant, scrubs or

PJ bottom. Spot clean any stains with Tide To Go stain remover.

In the Laundry:Pre-treat stains with a pretreatment product like Shout, SPRAY ‘N WASH, or

Zout.

Add your favorite laundry detergent. You should to use less of this than you think. This stuff is hard to rinse out, and you honestly don’t need a lot.

If you have hard water try adding 1/2 to 1 cup Washing Soda (this is NOT baking soda). You can find this in the laundry aisle of most stores. It will make everything you wash come out better.

Also add a good enzymatic stain remover. This should be Resolve, OxiClean, or another enzyme stain remover. The enzyme in the name is important. Nothing else will remove organic stains and prevent sweat staining.

NO bleach with any pant that stretches. Lycra and spandex do not like bleach.

End the cycle with a gentle (perfume free) fabric softener. It will make it easier to pull on your breeches at the next show.

Hang to dry. No dryers. Didn’t we already talk about Lycra and spandex?

Need More Hours?

We could use your help at Regionals!

2015 Year End Awards require 4 hours of your time from an ADA-sponsored event. All Members (even NAC) who want to be eligible for Year End Awards must complete the volunteer requirement before November 30, 2015 for the 2015 Year End Award Season.

If you still need to complete your hours, we can really use your help at the upcoming GAIG/USDF Regional Championships show in October! We need Runners, Ring Stewards, Golf Cart Drivers, especially on Friday!

The ADA relies on volunteers to run an enjoyable, organized event. Fulfillment of service requirements for ADA year end awards, scholarship and travel grant eligibility, and the rewards of friendship and free education are just some of the ways you benefit when you volunteer. And the best way to thank your volunteers is to return the favor when it’s their time to be part of an education or competitive event. We’d love to have your help for a morning or afternoon shift (4-5 hours) but even if you can only donate an hour or two, we appreciate your help. Competitors, we can also work around your ride schedule.

You can also submit Centerline articles, Barn News, Riding Tips, donate your venue or host an ADA-sponsored event! Lots of ways to give back to your organization.

Too busy, but know somebody willing to volunteer on your behalf?

Surrogate volunteers are welcome!

Questions or Signing Up? Contact Kathy Smith, our Volunteer Coordinator @ [email protected] today!
