Welcome!Every month Steve (from our Focus Around arm of the business) and I visit the various areas we cover, dropping off booklet samples and meeting up with our customers. On our rounds we have strategically placed “refuelling stops” where we top up on food and drink, aside from Weatherspoon’s pubs of course!!!

On our latest trip we visited two fantastic establishments that we’d only just found - Rosetta Cafe in Forest Hall and Deli Espresso in Gosforth.

In Forest Hall we popped into the Rosetta Cafe to see new customers Patricia & Ahmed, who have recently set up their business and have just started advertising with us in our Forest Hall magazine.

Well, their advert claims they serve “simply the best coffee...”, and being a couple of coffee addicts we thought we’d test out the claim - WOW!!! Ahmed blends his own mix of beans and the experience was truly delicious.

The couple then tempted us with samples of their home made food; dark chocolate brownies, proper waffles (not the mass produced eggy ones) and chocolate covered shortbread. I have to say the food was superb - but don’t take my word for it, pop in and sample for yourself.

Rosetta Cafe is just off Forest Hall Centre on West View (the side street almost opposite the railway footbridge) and don’t forget to tell them that you heard about the cafe in Focus Around! If you call in October and the cafe is shut don’t worry, the couple are away for a couple of weeks but do call back, trust me it will be worth the wait!

This was our second visit to new business Deli Espresso, at the bottom of Salter’s Road in Gosforth, and once again the welcome we received from owners Ashley & Amber was second to none. They too (as the business name suggests) serve a beautiful cup of coffee, but what we hadn’t expected was the amazing flavour of their huge cupcakes...they are a meal in themselves and simply melt in the mouth...totally delicious!

PLAYTIME PLUS (St Aidan’s Church, Stobhill)Playtime Plus meets during school term times and is a group for the under 5s and their carers. Meetings start at 1.45 pm and children enjoy a variety of activities. We begin at 1.30pm with informal play in the children’s area at the back of the church where we also offer refreshments to the children and adults. At approximately 2.15pm we move to the front of the church, nearer the altar. The children are encouraged to sit on the carpet and take part in a very informal act of worship. This involves listening to a short story which is delivered using a variety of visual aids, depending on the theme, and is usually interactive due to the age of the children; then song time when one or two songs may be chosen by myself in connection with our theme but the children are also welcome to choose any particular song they wish (nursery rhymes etc.) that are familiar to them. We end the worship time with a short, sung prayer. We conclude with a simple craft which is also linked to our story and helps to reinforce the message it contains. We are a very informal group, with a mixture of people who come to Church and others who don’t and anyone interested in finding out more can contact Wendy, who runs the group, or just come along and give us a try. Everyone will be made very welcome. For more information contact the Parish Office. Tel 01670 503 326.

If you would like to get out more and enjoy your local area with like-minded people, the Morpeth Ramblers is for you! We meet at 9 am every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at the car park next to Morpeth Library. We normally car share to the start point and very occasionally we use a coach if it involves a longer journey, and there is enough interest.

The walks are generally for people who are reasonably fit with at least a little country walking experience. Some of the walks may include steep paths and open country and it is best to contact the secretary or leader beforehand to check on the grade of walk if there is any doubt. As conditions on walks can vary with the terrain and weather, walking boots and waterproofs are recommended as is a rucksack with sufficient food and drink.

We are a friendly group and will make welcome anyone who wishes to join us.

If you would like further information on the Morpeth Group, please contact the secretary on 01670 518 031 or go towww.ramblers.org.uk

Ad-Venture GOSFORTH Knock Knock by Ron Clarke

KNOCK KNOCK !in fact began generations ago as we left food and other offerings to appease wanderingspirits. This developed into people usingcostumes of spirits to go from door to door to collect these offerings.

Others strike a different note and propose that Halloween is nothing more than frivolity. Then, those maybe less enchanted see October 31 as just an easy way for youngsters to get money or sweets simply by knocking on your door.

Heh, whatever. But for one thing. Halloweenhas never been bigger or simpler. If you want, there is no need to carve your pumpkin anymore as you can actually buy plastic ones. Maybe that is carving up tradition a little too far.

Of course, if you having none of it. There is always the temptation to switch off the lights, draw the curtains and just pretend you are not at home.

The choice is yours…..oooh !

Yes, here we go again. Vampires, ghouls and ghosts descending on our doorstep as night falls and the witching hour begins. Oooh, all a bit scary, haunted and horrible.

You can almost forget bonfire night. Pumpkinsand the paranormal or now the daring of the darkness. Just take a look at your local supermarket or corner shop. Aisles are set aside with all the latest gadgets and gimmicks for the big event.

You can get everything from skeletons to scary butlers and a whole assortment of spooky noises.

And the kids seem to love it. The spookier the better. And, let’s be honest, there are mums and dads out there who jump at the chance to put on a cloak and add extra blood tainted fangs.

There is also the opportunity to air those timeless jokes. Why do demons and ghouls hang out together? ......Because demons are a ghoul’s best friend. Or where does Dracula go in New York? The Vampire State Building. Come on, they are still funny.

So is it just a bit of harmless fun or somethingmore dark and sinister? Well, the jury isprobably still out on this as the history ofHalloween seems to be mix of ancientpractices, religious rituals and folk traditions. From welcoming the start of winter to warding off those from the past. It is all there.

Some will you tell you that trick or treating

Using the Collaborative process Rodger and Sue could set out the issues that they would like to discuss at a first four way meeting. Their solicitors will then meet to draw up an agenda for the meeting. In this example it may be agreed at the meeting that Sue shall receive less maintenance from Rodger to allow him to fund better accommodation for himself in the medium term. Some thought could be given as to when/if the family home is to be sold; a delay in doing this could make everyone feel less worried. Arrangements could be made for Rodger to immediately start seeing more of the children.

At the first meeting, Rodger and Sue will be expected to sign an agreement stating that if they are unable to agree on all matters and they wish to pursue the court route then they would each have to appoint a new solicitor. This may seem a strange concept however, the point of the agreement is twofold:

It means that if the going gets tough in the meetings, which it may well do, then the parties and their solicitors are encouraged to come up with workable solutions and not to walk away from the process.

The other reason is that everyone is far more open in the Collaborative process; this is on the basis that they are trying to resolve issues together. Without the agreement being signed both parties may fear that information shared at such a meeting could be used against them in court.

The advantage of this process is that your solicitor will be present at all meetings, you can be given legal advice throughout and the outcome is governed by the wishes of you and your partner rather than a judge.

From the solicitor’s point of view this is a new experience, instead of us doing all the talking we find ourselves listening more. My Husband is delighted to hear it!

However, there a process that is relatively new to this country which is designed to try and minimise anxiety and stress. It is known as Collaborative Law and is practised by solicitors who have undertaken specialist training. The idea is to try to avoid the traditionalcourt route.

If a client is interested in the process and, if their (ex) partner’s solicitor is also a Collaborative lawyer, then the process is potentially workable.

In the first instance each party will discuss with their solicitor the most pressing issues affecting them. As a solicitor I would still be giving my client legal advice throughout the process. However, from the client’s point of view they may have more urgent concerns that they would like to have addressed sooner than the usual court process will permit.

Consider the case of Sue and Rodger. Until recently they lived in a nice house with their two teenage children in an area with good schools. Following their separation Rodger now lives in a two bedroomed flat which he finds very depressing. He feels as if he hardly ever sees the children. Sue is worried sick that they will have to sell the house and that the children will have to move to another school. The children feel stunned and are generally worried about everything.

Further details of the Society’s walks, including two more evening walks, can be obtained from the Secretary Sarah Howells on 01670 513757

or by visiting www.morpethfootpathssociety.org.uk

On a recent warm and sunny Sunday, eleven members of Morpeth Footpaths Society met up in the Forest Enterprise Car Park at Thrunton Woods for the latest of the longer walks in the 2011 Programme.

We started by walking uphill through the Forest along the edge of Thrunton Crag, where on a couple of occasions fine views to the North were available due to there being a gap in the trees. On reaching the end of the trees we turned right and then through a gate in the drystone wall left onto moorland, where the heather was still in bloom and so lovely to see. Skirting Callaly Crag, we walked above Hob’s Nick - named after Hobgoblins who were blamed fornumerous disasters - and stopped at a cairn for lunch. From this point there were great views to the Cheviots to the North and West and closer to hand, Callaly Castle.

Continuing South across the moorland we crossed the Coe Burn, before climbing up the North slope of Long Crag, where we reached the cairn and then the triangulationpillar - at 1048 feet the highpoint of today’s walk. Thesandstone crags here have been weathered into a variety of shapes, which one member with a good imaginationlikened to Northumberland’s Mount Rushmore!

We then walked East along the ridge on a mixture of peat and sandstone to Coe Crags at 1007 feet, passing anumber of boundary stones all carrying the letter ‘S’ on one side, referring to the Selby family which had a number of branches in Northumberland. After another break on the top of Coe Crags, where we admired the views to the Simonside ridge to the South and Alnwick Moor to the East, we started our descent through bracken and trees on a zigzag path, eventually crossing the Coe Burn again and reaching a forest track.

We turned left here and followed the track as it contoured around Coe Hill and Black Walter, where a lot of the trees have been felled, before again meeting the track along the top of Thrunton Crag. From this point it was almost all downhill back to the car park, where we said our good byes and returned home with aching muscles but a sense of satisfaction of having spent the day catching up with old friends in a lovely part of Northumberland.

When I was a child “Trick or Treat” was called “Penny for Halloween” and was quickly followed within days by “Penny for the Guy.” This involved actually creating Blue Peter style something thatresembled the poor gunpowder plotter in a Picassokind of way, for which you literally did getpennies for your efforts. If I remember remember, remember the 5th of November correctly, the last time I ever attempted to make a Guy, he had an aerosol can for a body and a balloon for a head… yes he really would have gone up with a bang if he’d ever actually made it to on to a bonfire rather than just round to my next door neighbours’ doorsteps in a pushchair.

I also recall fondly that Halloween many, many full moons ago, was the one and only time I have ever won anything. Back in Brownies we held a Halloweenparty which included a fancy dress competition. Whereas my fellow pack members all committed the fatal rookie error of turning up dressed in black with a pointy paper hat, I had thought out of the box like a stealth Pixie. I had decided to dress up, or should that rather be down, as that traditional Halloween favourite - a tramp. Far be it from any good Brown Owl to be able to favour one seven year old would be witch and accompanying pushy mother overanother; I’m sure it was far easier to just go with the only one wearing a pair of holey socks and her Dad’s old tin mug from his building site days strapped to her waist with a piece of string.

Today the likes of my low-fi, makeshift costume just wouldn’t cut it; A bed-sheet fashioned like a ghost from Scooby Do sadly will just no longer do. Twenty first century Halloween, involves buying aprofessionally designed costume that wouldn’t look out of place in a multi-million pound remake of Evil Dead.

Halloween really is scary! And this development brings me to one of the scariest Halloweens I ever experienced, all be it unexpectedly at the supermarket checkout. There I was innocentlygoing about my business just like any typical next victim in a horror flick, happily unloading my trolley, when there nestled next to the insurance information and Christmas club savings cards, I spot a card that you could buy to save spare cash on to help spread the cost of Halloween! Now thattruly is scary! What ever happened to just buying a few extra apples for a bit of bobbing? Now it’s multiplepacks of multipacks of confectionary to be handedout to any random person that comes knocking. What ever happened to not answering the door to strangerslet alone those dressed up as Freddy Kruger?

But now there’s also so much more Halloweenparaphernalia to be had. Walk into any supermarketthis month and you will see shelf upon shelf of cute pumpkin outfits for baby, fake blood, masks and jelly monsters for the kids, vampy vampire outfits for Mum, hilarious gory severed heads or hands for Dad, in-fact something for the whole Addams Family.

Seeing as how Halloween is now likely to cost me as much as Christmas – bah humbug that’s what I say. I’ll be the one in the house with the lights switched off pretending I’m not at home.
