Patient finds peace of mind at Lake Orion Family DentistryWhen Lake Orion resident Judith Truscott

told her former dentist that local anesthesiadidnt numb her mouth like it should, he saidhe understood. He said hed dealt with patientswith similar problems, and everything wouldbe fine.

Judith wasnt so sure. In fact, she has amajor fear of the dentist, and her nextappointment would involve a root canal. Sheput her fears aside, though, and went to herappointment.

After the procedure, her dentist pushed up

his surgical mask, looked at her, and said ithad been a long time since hed had toadminister that much anesthetic. Judith wasntsurprised.

I told you so, she said as the dentistflagged her chart for future reference.

Judith wasnt satisfied. Afterward, sheavoided dental work for years. She had herteeth cleaned and attended regular checkups,but would not undergo the dental work sheneeded. Judith knew her oral health wasdeteriorating, yet did not know how toovercome her fears.

I had a major fear of the dentist, she said.But as a registered nurse, Judith also knew

that avoiding dental work could put her overallhealth at risk. She understood the link betweenpoor oral health and heart attack, stroke, and

other serious systemic problems.To be so afraid that it keeps you from

taking care of your health is horrible, sherecalls. If you do not have a fear, you cantunderstand it. I was so apprehensive before Ifound Dr. Greenfield that I would cancel anappointment three times and just never getthe work done.

When Judith found Dr. Greenfield at LakeOrion Family Dentistry, her fears were put torest. He listened to me and explained mytreatment options, what he wanted to do, andwhy, Judith said, noting she felt in control ofher treatment plan with no pressure. Then I

met with the nurse anesthetist at Dr.Greenfields office, and she was excellent.

Wonderful!In addition to an inability to numb with local

anesthesia and an intense fear of dentalprocedures, Judith also suffers from acuteasthma. She asked questions most peopledont know to ask, and the nurse anesthetistprovided the answers and explanation Judithneeded.

After much discussion, Judith, and Dr.Greenfield determined that two sessions ofdental procedures would be required. Judithrequested that the milder phase of treatment

be completed first, and Dr. Greenfield waspleased to comply. The nurse would administer

IV sedation to relieve Judiths anxiety duringtreatment.

I felt nothing, and I remember nothing,said Judith. There was no pain, no fear.

Dr. Greenfield used CEREC, a newtechnology that incorporates CAD/CAMtechnology for one-visit, permanent, ceramicdental crowns. Judith had two CEREC crownsplaced, along with a dental filling, during herfirst visit. Afterward, Judith had no anxietyabout the second phase of her treatment plan,which was scheduled just a few weeks later.

During the second appointment, the nurseadministered IV sedation, and this time, Dr.Greenfield placed three crowns and performedlaser periodontal treatment.

There was no bruising, no pain, not evenat the injection sites, Judith said. In fact, Ileft the next day for a six-week Floridavacation.

Judith ranks her experience a 12 on a scaleof 1 to 10.

I was a basket case when I came in, shesaid. They really made me feel good; they arevery attentive. I never feel like a number at Dr.Greenfields office, and my hygienist, Ronda,is wonderful.

Judith has referred her son and daughter-in-law to Dr. Greenfield, and she hopes he canhelp others who are in her situation, filled with

fear and in desperate need of dental work torestore and protect their health.
