NO CORRUGATED FAIRWAYSwith the NEW 1940 SUPER MOWE I•

We had two objectives in mind when we designed the 1940 SuperMower. One was the elimination of the current bugaboo of corrugated fair-ways .... The New Super Mower has only 14-inch drive wheels, but with a3-inch tread it clings to the ground like a leech.

The next objective was to build a mower that could be disassembledquickly by any ordinary workman .... The New Super Mower can betaken down in just about half the time required for the older models.

You will want to know more about this mower. Send for our 32-pagecatalog today.

Pneumatic Wheels.High Cutting

Range.You can put Pneumatic

wheels on the New Superif you want them. Theyare no good for GolfCourses, but they are finefor Parks and Institutions.

The rear roller can beadjusted so the bed knifeis 2~ inches off theground. Great for roughcutting.

Worthington Cutting Units for 1940operating and maintenance efficiencyEach year since 1914 Worthington engineering research and practical operat-ing experience have been the bases of continuous alterations and improve-ments to meet changing mowing conditions and the demands of our cus-tomers for the very latest and most acceptable machine in its field. Thereare 26 years of this policy of leadership in the new 1940 WorthingtonCutting Unit. As always, it is today, the most modern and up-to-date cuttingunit available.

Here are the outstanding features ofthe 1940 Worthington Cutting Unit:

1Your choice of two designs of flyknife reels-the conventional spiral

type or the patented "V" or herringbonetype.

2 The fly knife steel used by W orthing-ton is a wider section than ever, al-

lowing for greater wear, and greatlylengthening the life of the reel.

OLD NEW

3 This new knife section is a specialheat-treated, oil-tempered alloy steel

with a minimum Rockwell hardness of40-C.

4 The largest diameter section of coldrolled steel ever used as a fly knife

shaft is part of the construction of 'this1940 unit.

S The fly knife blades are firmly joinedand supported to the fly knife shaft

with 6 steel discs instead of 5 discs orspiders.

6 The unit has a separate train of ma-chine cut gears for each ground wheel

running in oil bath on both sides, Thishas been standard on all WorthingtonCutting Units since 1914 and has proveditself by 26 years of actual use.

Worthington

7 The fly knife reel and the bed knifebacking and steel can be removed for

grinding in 9 minutes' time. Completedismantling time for the entire unit re-quires but 11 minutes. This has been atime saver for Worthington owners since1914.

8 Notice the sturdy, demountable rimson the ground wheels with double row

of auxiliary corrugations to give deeperpenetration and better traction on Ber-muda turf and in other heavy mowingservices. Acclaimed the best wheel rimtread of any mower since its introduction4 years ago. Note, too, that these rims, when worn out or if broken by accident, can be removed and replaced in a fewmoments, at less than Y;; the cost of awhole new wheel. Rubber pneumatictires are interchangeable and optionalequipment for those who prefer them.

9 The single hand adjustment for regu-lation of the bed knife steel is an ex-

clusive Worthington feature and thequickest adjustment of any cutting uniton the market. It automatically locks inany position-no tools r-equired.

10 Worthington Cutting Units arelubricated on automotive principles.

When gear housings have been filled toproper level they need only be checkedonce during the season. There are noother places to grease or oil on the cut-ting units or frame.

V-type reel

From the greenkeepers' and operators' viewpoints, there is less fussing and

trouble with Worthington Cutting Units and Gang Mowers. The general

design is simplicity itself, its construction strong and sturdy to give years

of service, and a beautiful cut under all conditions with a cutting range up

to 4 inches. Its ground weight is 223 pounds.

MAGNESIUM and ACID S IAt times maqnesium deficiency limitsturf qrowth. It has been encounteredin the Pacific Northwest, and also alonqthe Atlantic Seaboard, notably in partsof New Enqland, New York, New Jersey, and even farther south. As a rule, soil content of available maq-nesium, and calcium also, is lower inacid than in non-acid soil. Hence maq-nesium deficiency is qenerally confinedto acid oil.Accepted practice is to express soil re-action in terms of pH. By this methodthe fiqure 7 represents a neutral oil.lower fiqures denot increasinq acidityand hiqher ones increasinq alkalinity. The critical pH for most turf qrassesfalls in the ranqe of pH 5.0 to 6.0.Besides testinq for soil reaction, avail-able maqnesium should be determinedalso, especially on more acid sampl sfrom the localities enumerated above. When maqnesium is low (500 pound, orless p.r acr. by the Truoq Method), afinely qround dolomitic limestone shouldbe used to correct excessive acidity. Dolo-mite contains both calcium and maqn siumcarbonat. and hence performs a dual func-tion. It corrects acidity and liminat •• maq-nesium deficiency. This is cheaper thanbuyinq non-maqnesium limestone to cerr etacidity, and maqnesium sulfate to proTideneeded maqnesium. A dolomite containinqnot less than 15 to 20 percent maqnesium, reported as maqnesium oxide (or Us equiv-alent) should be used. If not printed onthe outside of baq, this information can bobtained from producer. Otherwise, sourceof nearest dolomite can b procured fromAqricultural Department, National Lime As-sociation, Washinqton, D.C.Althouqh rare, maqnesium deficiency mayoccur where lime is not n •• d d to correctacidity. Then maqn slum sulfate, commonlycalled epsom salts, should be used. Onqreens from 1 to 2 pounds per 1000 squarfeet suffice, and on fairways not more than100 pounds per acr. ar needed. Dolomit.is of doubtful value as a source of imm di-ately available maqnesium when soil r ac-tion is above pH 6.0.
