TITAN ACTUATOR RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS

The straight line movement of the actuator is accomplished by using rollers to reduce resistance so that the kinetic energy of a loaded trailer can be translated into braking effort.

This design consists of a tubing assembly to meet applicable specifications for tongue load plus needed strength for side load. The side load strength is particularly to resist bending in jackknife situations.

INTRODUCTION TO SURGE BRAKINGSurgebrakingisaccomplishedbyreplacingatrailer’sstandardtonguecouplerwithan actuator and adding hydraulic brake assemblies. The “surge” or “push” of the trailertowardthetowvehicleduringdecelerationautomaticallysynchronizesthesetrailerbrakeswiththetowvehiclebrakes.Asthetrailerpushesagainstthevehicle,theactuatortelescopestogetherandappliesforcetoitsmastercylinder,supplyinghydraulicpressuretothetrailer’sbrakes.

Surgeactuatorsofthistypeprovideaservicelifeofapproximatelyfiveyearswithproperinstallation,usageandmaintenance.However,awell-cared-foractuatorcanoftenexceedthisestimate.TogetthemostbenefitfromyourTitansurgeactuator,followtheinstructionsgiveninthiscatalogandusecommonsenseincaringfortheTitan brake actuator and your entire trailer brake system.

Limited Warranty.TitanInternational(Titan)warrantsitsproductstobefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipforoneyearfromdateofdeliverytotheoriginalpurchaserwhenproperlyinstalled,usedandmaintainedbythepurchaser.

Thiswarrantydoesnotapplytodamageorlosscausedbyanyorallofthefollowingcircumstancesorconditions:

•Freightdamage.

•Parts,accessories,materialsorcomponentsnotobtainedfromorapprovedinwritingbyTitan.

•Misapplication,misuseandfailuretofollowthedirectionsorobservecautionsandwarningsoninstallation,operation,application,inspectionormaintenancespecifiedinanyTitanquotation,acknowledgement,salesliterature,specificationsheet or installation instruction and service manual (“applicable literature”).

IfanyTitanproductsarefounduponTitan’sexaminationtohavebeendefectivewhensupplied,TITANwilleither:creditthepurchaser’saccountforthepurchasepriceoftheTitanproduct;replace the Titan product; or repair the product. Titan has sole discretioninchoosingwhichoptiontoprovide.ForthisLIMITEDWARRANTYtoapply,Titanmustreceivenoticeoftheallegeddefectwithin30daysofeitherthediscoveryoftheallegeddefectortheexpirationofthewarrantyperiod,whicheverisearlier.Anyclaimnotmadewithinthisperiodshallconclusivelybedeemedwaived.

IfrequestedbyTitan,purchasershallreturntheallegeddefectiveproducttoTitanforexaminationatTitan’sdirectionandreturnexpense.TitanwillnotpayforexpensesincurredinreturningaproducttoTitanwithoutTitan’spriorwrittenauthorization.Titanshallnotbeliableforanyotherexpensespurchaserincurstoremedyanydefect.Purchaserswaivesubrogationonallclaimsunder any insurance.

Limitation of Liability.ItisexpresslyagreedthattheliabilityofTitan is limited and Titan does not function as an insurer. To Obtain Technical Assistance. To enable Titan to respond to a requestforassistanceorevaluationofcustomeroruseroperatingdifficulty,pleaseprovideataminimumthefollowinginformationbycalling1-800-832-8781:

•Modelnumber,serialnumberandallotherdataonthespecificcomponent that appears to be involved in the difficulty.

•ThedateandfromwhomyoupurchasedyourTitanproduct.

•Stateyourdifficulty,beingsuretomentionatleastthefollowing:application,natureofloadinvolved,andweightofthe load.

Field Service.IffieldserviceattherequestofthepurchaserisrenderedandthedifficultyisfoundnottobewithTitan’sproduct,thepurchasershallpaythetimeandexpense(attheprevailingrateatthetimeofservice)ofseller’sfieldrepresentative(s).Chargesforservice,laborandotherexpensesthathavebeenincurredbythepurchaser,itscustomeroragentwithoutpriorwrittenauthorizationofTitanwillnotbeaccepted.

BrakeRite and Surge Actuators:

1) DO NOT submerge the actuator. Internal corrosion may resultandcausebrakefailure.Saltwater,granularfertilizers,andothercorrosivematerialsaredestructivetometal.Tominimizethedamagingeffectofcorrosiononabrakingsystemusedundercorrosiveconditions,werecommendthattheactuatorbeexternallyflushedaftereachusewithahigh-pressurewaterhose.Besuretolubricate all moving parts after the unit has dried. Whenever theunitwillbeoutofserviceforanextendedperiodoftime,orafterharduse,removethebrakedrumsandcleaninsidethebrakes.Packwheelbearingswithgreasebeforethedrumisinstalled.Failuretoproperlyandadequatelygreaseandmaintaintheactuatorcouldweakenitand/orcauseittofail and result in serious injury and/or property damage.

2) Failure to complete the “BRAKE FLUID FILLING AND BLEEDING” procedures promptly after installation may result in internal master cylinder corrosion and cause brake failure.

3) Useonlyfreshbrakefluidfromasealedcontainer.DONOTreusefluid.Afterfillingandbleeding,remembertorefilltheactuator.Failuretomaintainanadequatefluidlevelmaycause brake failure.

4) Toensureproperengagementoftheactuator’scouplertothetowball,DONOTuseamulti-pieceball,anincorrectlysizedballoraworn/damagedball.

5) Thebreakawaysystemisnotdesignedtooperateifthetrailerdoesnotseparatecompletelyfromthetowvehicle,orifthetrailertongue"submarines"andgoesbeneaththetowvehicle.DONOTusethebreakawaysystemasaparkingbrake.

6) Thetrailer’ssafetychains’lengthMUSTbesetshortenoughsotheactuator’sbreakawaycable/chainisnotpulledifthecouplerseparatesfromthetowvehicle’shitchbutremainsconnectedbythesafetychains.ThebreakawaysystemshouldonlyactivateafterBOTHthetrailer’scouplerANDsafetychainshavefailedandallowedthetrailertocompletelyseparatefromthetowvehicle.Providejustenoughslackinthetrailersafetychainstoallowtightturns.Thechainsshould not drag on the ground. Safety chains must be used. Whentowing,AVOIDsharpturnswhichcancausetheactuatortobindagainstthetowvehicle.Thiscandamagetheactuatorandtrailer,causingbrakefailure.AVOIDtowingacrossseverebumpsordips,whichmaycausethetowhitchto lever against the actuator/coupler and compromise the connection.

7) Trailercomponentsmustbeusedinaccordancewiththerecommended load capacity provided by Titan.
