Water Safety Actuality It’s that time of year again. We’re slowly moving from that cold brisk air to the nice hot summer days. That means it’s swimming time. If you’re a parent, it might mean swimming lesson season. Most parents find learning how to swim a valuable life saving technique. why then is accidental drowning the number one leading cause of death in boys ages one to three and the second in girls one to three? The two leading influences of drowning according to the CDC are lack of ability, and lack of supervision. Research shows that formal swimming lessons at a young age reduces a child’s risk of drowning. Supervision of your children is also key. Although there will usually be a lifeguard present on the beach or a gated pool, they are responsible not only for your child but for the entire facility. Keeping tabs on your child while they are swimming is crucial. Veteran lifeguard Monica agrees.
