“The greatness of a person’s power is the measure
of his surrender.” J. Wilbur Chapman
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
August certainly ended with an unexpected surprise: the arrival of Irene.
Although we don’t always know what’s ahead, we have a God who is all
knowing, who loves us and wants the very best for us even in the midst of
the difficulties of our lives. We worship a God who wants to be in a rela-
tionship with us so that we may know His will for our lives. In my sermon
for August 28th – the day Irene arrived – I planned to focus on the reading
from Romans 12:1-8. It begins: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the
mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and ac-
ceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to
this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing
you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and
perfect.”
What does “renewal of your mind” mean? It’s about transformation. Our
minds are renewed as we yield ourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit,
as we read and study the Holy Scriptures, as we come together to participate
in the mysteries of Holy Communion and as we meet together with other
believers. Bishop Bill believes that it’s vitally important that there’re oppor-
tunities for people within each parish to meet together in small groups. Cur-
rently there’s a small group of men that meets each Thursday at 5:30 a.m. at
the church and there are a couple of other groups that come together to ex-
plore what it means to be faithful followers of Christ. Pastor Dan and I are
exploring ways to provide opportunities for others to be part of this kind of
group. I urge you to join with me and the others from Redeemer and go to
Amesbury on September 16th and 17th to attend a conference on the place of
small groups in discipleship and church planting.
Bishop Tom Wright commented: “The key to it all is the transforming of the
mind. Many Christians in today’s world never come to terms with this.
They hope they will be able to live up to something like Christian standards
while still thinking the way the rest of the world thinks. It can’t be done….
Having the mind renewed by the persuasion of the spirit is the vital start of
that true human living which is God’s loving will for all his children.” The
wonder of transformation is that Christians gradually begin to think and act
like Jesus. Paul reminds us that we’re called together as the Church so that
we can do this together, so that we can encourage one another and hold each
other accountable – that’s why coming together each Sunday, in small

The Church of the Re-deemer is a communi-
ty of Christians who
seek to follow Jesus
Christ and lead others into a saving relation-
ship with Him as it
practices the Christian Faith within the Angli-
can tradition.
The focus of the parish
is the reading and
studying of the Bible,
through which God has declared the Good
News of salvation
from sin and the hope of eternal life, and the
celebration of the sac-
rament of Holy Com-munion each Sunday.
The Church of the Re-
deemer is a parish of The Anglican Diocese
in New England, The
Anglican Church in North America. It is
committed to working
with Christians in all
traditions and to join with other parishes
and our bishops to pre-
sent Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy
Spirit that people eve-
rywhere will come to know Him as Lord and
serve Him as King in
the fellowship of His

groups and for times of study is so important. “For as in
one body we have many members, and the members do
not all have the same function, so we, though many, are
one body in Christ, and individually members one of an-
other.” If you are missing, the Body is not complete. If
you are not sharing in a ministry in your parish, the Body
is not complete.
There’re many ministry opportunities at Redeemer– the
Sunday prayer team, greeters and ushers, altar guild,
counters, Sunday school teachers and helpers, lectors and
lay ministers, helping with Pizza Wednesday, caring for
Little Lambs, Youth ministry, Tuesday prayer group,
Outreach committee, music ministry and other ways to
serve. Each of us is part of the Body and is called to min-
istry. Please speak to Pastor Dan or me and let us know
where you believe you are being called to serve – help
make the Body complete.
Your brother in Christ,

Redeemer Norwood will resume its Sunday
morning adult education program on September
18th. We begin at 9:45 a.m. You can come to the
8:00 a.m. service, stay for coffee, conversation

a cup of coffee and adult education before the
service.
During the fall, we will be doing a series on the
doctrines and usages of the Anglican Church. To
facilitate our discussion, we will be using a Cate-
chism on the Church produced by the Church
Book Society. Our topics for September are:
September 18th - Sunday Worship
September 25th - Places of Worship
Members of the Norwood congregation are en-
couraged to attend and bring a friend. Each Sun-
day’s topic is a separate subject. If you miss one
or more, you will not be “behind” and anyone

Hendricks, who has been a professor at Dallas
Theological Seminary for more than 50 years.
He mentored Chuck Swindoll, Tony Evans, Jo-

Christian leaders. He also served as the chaplain
for the Dallas Cowboys from 1976 to 1984, and
has been a keynote speaker for Promise Keepers.
The program begins at 7:00 p.m. with singing and
prayer, followed by Bible study, and concludes at

On Sunday, September 25th, Redeemer Norwood
will have a “Friendship Sunday”. Every member
of the congregation is encouraged to bring one or
more people to church with them. Each of the
two services will be an instructed service. Pastor
Alan will explain briefly at various points
throughout the service what we are doing and
why. The homily will be short and will deal
with the Christian doctrine of salvation. We
hope to make a number of new friends for our
fellowship.

Our weekly outreach to high school students in
Norwood resumes on September 14th. Pizza
Wednesday is a collaborative effort of Redeemer,
Young Life and the First Baptist Church of Nor-
wood. Students are invited to the church hall af-
ter school for pizza, soft drinks, ice cream and
games. Near the end of the school year in the
spring, we acquired a basketball hoop, courtesy
of Ron McElman, and a pool table, courtesy of
Pastor Dan Sylvia, which we have added to the
ping pong, air hockey, foosball and other games.
“Okies” is also a big hit. Through this effort, we
hope to continue to build relationships with the
kids and lead them to Christ.
In October and Novem-
ber, Redeemer Norwood
will hold a weekly club
for 3rd and 4th graders at
the Balch School in Nor-
wood. It will meet on
Tuesdays after school from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00
p.m. The club is called “First Place” and will
stress the development of good character, while
having fun. There will be songs and games and
crafts and other fun. If anyone is interested in
helping with this club, please contact Pastor Alan.
All volunteers will be CORI checked.
Saturday, September 17th is Norwood Day. From
9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. people are invited to
come to a celebration in the town center, which
includes food, entertainment and booths spon-
sored by organizations in Norwood. Several
thousand people attend this event each year. Re-
deemer will have a booth, at which we will greet
people and provide information about our
church. If anyone is interested in volunteering to
work for an hour or two (or more) please call
Pastor Alan.

Doing the Right Thing, a six-session video
study, explores the ethical and moral breakdown
that is hitting our culture from all sides. Join
hosts Brit Hume, Chuck Colson, Dr. Robert
George and a dis-
tinguished panel
as they undertake
an exploration of
Ethics before a
live student audi-
ence in Princeton,
New Jersey. The panel responds to students’
questions concerning ethical issues in a non-
condemning but challenging way, stimulating
thought, discussion, and action.
The key to an ethical culture is educating and
arming ourselves to recognize, name and reject
wrongdoing, and to support, expect and demand
ethical behavior, both personal and public. This
study looks at current issues in several spheres of
our lives – personal, business and governmental.
The six sessions focus on the following questions
and topics:
How did we get into this mess?
Is there truth or a moral law that we
can all know?
If we know what is right, can we do
it?
What does it mean to be human, and
why does it matter?
Ethics in the Market Place
Ethics in Public Life
Father Potter will lead the discussion. The study
will end on November 3rd. If you plan to attend,
please add your name (and the names of your
guests as well) to the sign up list at church or call
the church office, 508-346-3423.

Taking a Look at God’s Character and Person
“To know God, we must know what He is like,”
says Myrna Alexander, author of this study.
Though this study is designed as a 13-week study,
we will gather each week to look at the Introduction
and 6 of the truths about the character of God:
Love, Supreme and Sovereign, All-powerful, Good,
Omniscient, All-wise. We will meet at the home of
Gail Potter. Please add your name to the signup
sheet on the Welcome Table at church. Contact
Gail by September 15th so that books can be or-
dered. The cost of the book will be approximately

Medway HouseMedway HouseMedway House
Our outreach project for the months of Septem-
ber and October is Medway House, a temporary
emergency shelter for homeless families. Med-
way House has a capacity of 12 families. As
soon as a family moves out, another family
comes in right away.
New arrivals often will not receive food stamp
benefits for several weeks, due to red tape. Med-
way House uses gift cards to help bridge the gap,
buying formula, diapers and medicines not cov-
ered by insurance.
There is no strict time frame for shelter stay but
they hope to move families out after no more
than three or four months. Their goal is to help
each family secure a safe, affordable place to
live on their own.
Medway House would love to have:
Personal care items for adults, such as tooth-
paste, deodorant, etc.
Baby care items, such as wipes, wash and
baby powder.
Diapers in the larger sizes (size 3, 4, & 5).
Donations of gift cards (especially to Shaw’s,
Wal-Mart or CVS).
Twin sized blankets and comforters (they do
take lightly used ones).
There will be a bin at the church labeled to ac-
cept our donations for Medway House.

Dear Friends in Christ,
We can’t thank you enough for your gener-
ous support in getting kids to the Bowery Mission. Your help enabled a few of our
high school friends to experience a life
changing week as they served Christ.
I know that they’ll never be the same and
will forever look at the homeless with love and compassion.
Thanks for your partnership with us.

Hi All,
It has been so exciting to see how God is shaping and blessing our min-
istry to the youth this summer here in Franklin. For starters, VBS was a
huge success!!! Children age 3 through grade 5 took a trip down Main
Street and were turned “inside out and upside down”! Over 40 children
participated as well as many teen helpers and some fantastic adult vol-
unteers. Whether it was playing games, singing songs, doing crafts,
learning parables, eating snacks or watching the skits there was great
fun had by all. The kids learned about the “streets” of Gratitude, Com-
passion, Forgiveness, Grace and Faithfulness. They also learned, most important of all, that Jesus in-
deed makes a difference everyday. We extend our great thanks to all of the kids, parents, volunteers
and prayer partners that made this ministry possible. We can’t wait for next year’s VBS!
For the older students, along with helping out at VBS, there has been a weekly meeting originating at
the Ronan’s home as well as some of the homes of the kids attending. We have had a great group of
youth, grades 6-12, in attendance. There have been pool parties, late night fire pit gatherings as well as
a fun trip through Franklin doing the “trade you a paperclip for a _?__” game! We have had some good
times discussing our purpose in the world, morality, as well as unpacking what it means to be a teenager
in today’s culture. Recently we watched a great video “How Great is Our God” by Passion/Louis Gi-
glio. Youth Group will continue to run Sunday evenings as the school year begins. Many thanks to Ol-
iver Gruner and Leah Ronan who have partnered alongside of me in the ministry to the teens and also to
Ed and Leah Ronan for their willingness to host many of these meetings at their home.
Most recently a group of nine youth, myself, and Leah Ronan took a trip to
Six Flags New England in Agawam. We spent a great day on all the roller
coasters, eating junk food and playing games at the park. The kids took
great pleasure in laughing as my screams of terror on the Bizzaro ride
echo’d through the theme park. What a joy it has been to enjoy the compa-
ny and fellowship of such a great group of teens!
I ask that you continue to pray for our youth, for the ministry and those who are helping, as well as for
the parents of these teens!
Blessings,
Pastor Dan (a.k.a. Chef Pierre)

Les Carroll will present a seminar on inner heal-
ing at Redeemer in Franklin on Saturday, Sep-
tember 10th, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Over
the years Les has sought to present this kind of
healing in a simpler and much more accessible
way. The principles presented in the seminar
use the journey of the Israelites out of Egypt as a
metaphor for the path to healing. For more in-
formation, speak to Jim Armitage or visit

Anglican Church in North America in June. The Ordinal is the first portion
of the ACNA Book of Common Prayer that is in the process of preparation.
If you have never attended an ordination, this is great opportunity to experi-
ence more of our Anglican tradition close by and to support Leah and the
