MESSAGE FROMTHE DIRECTOR

2

As the new Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer, I am very honoured to present our 2018-2019 Activity Report.

As you will notice in this report, the talent and hard work of our professors and their research teams have once again brought much success to our School. The research carried out at HEC Montréal is both innovative and relevant. The results speak for themselves:

› Our researchers stand out—their work is regularly published in the top journals in their fields.

› They have had unprecedented success in obtaining funding through the most important competitions.

› They work closely with our business partners in the business world to make sure their research meets society’s current needs.

I am very proud of the commitment that our researchers have shown in producing and disseminating high-level research. HEC Montréal’s quest for excellence is driven by the development of its increasingly renowned culture of research.

On behalf of our entire community, I would like to thank my predecessor, Professor Robert Gagné who, during his tenure from 2013 to 2019, made great contributions to stimulating research and knowledge transfer activities at HEC Montréal. His leadership and informed decisions have played a major part in the results presented in this report. We would also be remiss not to mention the crucial role played by the Research Council and the invaluable team at the Research and Knowledge Transfer Office. These highly accomplished, competent and dedicated people have been instrumental to our collective success.

It is with much enthusiasm and confidence that I take on my role at HEC Montréal’s Research and Knowledge Transfer Office. I am thrilled by the perspective of working with our entire community to propel HEC Montréal as an international leader in management research.

Read on!

RESEARCH

› In May 2019, HEC Montréal received financial support from the federal government to pursue its equity, diversity and inclusion action plan (a two-year $370,300 grant). This will enable the School to expand and accelerate implementation of our EDI action plan in Research, which was launched in 2017.

› To coordinate implementation of its School-wide strategy, HEC Montréal’s Secretariat General has brought on board an EDI specialist. In cooperation with the EDI advisor, the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer has played a central role in developing the first School-wide EDI action plan, and in revising the EDI Action Plan in Research.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION (EDI) IN RESEARCH

Action plan for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Research: The Keys to Excellence in ResearchTargeted actions are based on Canada Research Chairs Program requirements and meet four distinct objectives:

1 Expand the pool of Professor-Researchers who represent excellence and diversity.

2Raise awareness and provide training on EDI to all individuals involved in the process of recruiting, selecting, welcoming, onboarding and promoting researchers and research chairholders.

3Incorporate the principles of EDI into the policies, processes and practices relating to recruitment and mentoring of research chairholders.

4 Establish a process to address and report equity, diversity and inclusion concerns.

INVENTION DISCLOSURES45 invention disclosures since 2002, including 4 new disclosures in 2018-2019.Example of an invention disclosure:

A method for analyzing and suggesting marketer-generated content (MGC) to plan and improve sales performance and online engagement. This method uses machine learning applied to data science, techniques used in finance and economics forcasting, and research methods developed in marketing and psychology. It is currently in a prospecting phase to find a potential licensor.Team of 4 co-inventors, 3 of whom are from HEC Montréal: Marcelo Vinhal Nepomuceno Associate Professor, Department of MarketingTolga Cenesizoglu Associate Professor, Department of FinanceLaurent Charlin Assistant Professor, Department of Decision Sciences

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFEROf the 45 invention disclosures, 20 technologies have been transferred to the industry, 16 of which are still active.Example of transferred technology:

EDGE ( Educational Data Game Experience) is a game that teaches users data analysis. The game gives players a scenario wherein they must find a solution to an analytical problem. Players use statistics to make predictions. The goal of the game is to help players learn how to make the best decisions. An operating permit was granted to the company SAS, who commercialized the game under the name “Cortex Analytics Simulation Game.”Team of 5 co-inventors, 4 of whom are from HEC Montréal: Pierre-Majorique Léger Full Professor, Department of Information TechnologyMarc Fredette Full Professor, Department of Decision SciencesJean-François Plante Associate Professor, Department of Decision SciencesJean-François Michon Director of ERPSim
