1. Summary

1.1 OVERVIEW

Centro de Química da Madeira (CQM) was officially created in 2004 with the approval of a proposal,

submitted in 2002, to the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) by a group of five (5) Ph. D.

researchers from the Chemistry Department of the University of Madeira (UMa). Its stated mission is

devoted to the development of R&D activities in the field of Chemistry in Madeira Island, promoting

simultaneously the post-graduation formation, the collaboration with other national and international

research unities, the services to the community and the awareness of science among youngsters and

the society in general. The research centre is organized in two research lines: Natural Products and

Materials. Currently, our research team is composed by 9 permanent Ph. D. members from two

Departments: Chemistry and Health Sciences, 5 Post-docs, 6 Ph. D. students, 6 collaborators and

several undergraduate and graduate students and one administrative staff member.

The ongoing research projects represent a total of €1.1 millions. This sum, along with previous

financed projects, amount more than €2.6 millions (considering the budget of all partners involved).

Besides, CQM participates in the national networks of NMR and MS with a national budget of €9.8

millions. Research projects are directed towards applied research with high local impact (evaluation

and improvement of Madeira wine; chemical characterization and pharmaceutical potential of products

extracted from endemic plants) and also directed to most emergent and demanding fields (design and

synthesis of drugs from bioactive natural analogues; gene delivery; tissue engineering; molecular

modeling; and nanochemistry with electronic and biomedical applications).

1.2 SUMMARY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITIES

This report describes the activities carried out at the CQM during the year of 2006, the third year

covered by the financial support of FCT. The report reflects an intensive work developed in terms of

publications, preparation of research projects, consolidation or establishment of collaborations,

recruitment of Ph. D. and Post-doc students as well as scientific divulgation actions.

The CQM had, during 2006, 29 research projects funded by different entities like FCT and INTERREG

IIIB, and awaits the evaluation outcome of 6 submitted projects accounting about €989.500. The

University of Madeira (UMa) created funds to promote research, and CQM obtained incentives

corresponding to 30 % of the total available amount.

Regarding the scientific production, 23 papers and 1 proceeding were published, and 7 other papers are

already accepted for publication. Additionally, 16 oral communications and 41 posters were presented

at scientific Meetings and Conferences.

In 2006, CQM continued the intensive work of recruiting Ph. D and Post-doc fellows started in 2004. Out

of 6 Ph. D and 4 Post-doc proposals submitted to the FCT, 5 were approved. As a result, CQM now has 5

Post-docs and 6 Ph. D students. Another Post-doc will soon start working at CQM. Additionally, CQM has

coordinated, since 2005, a post-graduate course on Occupational Safety and Hygiene that had 28

students in 2006.

It is worth mentioning the several conferences where team members of CQM were present as

organizers (co-organizers or local organizers):

• the 1st Annual International Meeting of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cellular

Therapies

• the 1st Marie Curie Cutting Edge InVENTS Conference on New Developments on Polymers for

Tissue Engineering, Replacement and Regeneration

• the 4th International Symposium of the Portuguese Society for Metabolic Diseases

• 1st Meeting YBIM Young BioMedical Investigators of the Macaronesia

Other three international meetings/advanced training schools are currently under preparation to be

held in 2007.

In 2006, CQM has also received the visit of three visiting felows:

• Prof. Kari Rissanen from the NanoScience Center/Univ. de Jyvaskyla (Finland) that stayed with

us during one week for discussion of research work with Prof. João Rodrigues and to give an

advanced training course on Supramolecular Chemistry

• Dr. Lucina Sousa, from UNESP/Brasil, that stayed during 4 months, in the framework of her

Ph.D. work, under the supervision of Prof. Helena Tomás

• Prof. José M. Padrón from BioLab, Instituto Canario de Investigación del Cáncer Instituto

Universitario de Bio-Orgánica "Antonio González"/Universidad de La Laguna, to develop

research work with Prof. Paula Castilho and to present an invited talk

CQM current activities also include initiatives that have the objective of promoting the awareness of

science among youngsters. Two main projects were deployed in this area: “A Química é

Divertida/Chemistry is Fun” (several chemistry/biochemistry related activities performed during 1

week), both funded by Agência Nacional para a Cultura Científica e Tecnológica (ANCCT) - Ciência Viva

and “Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias”. Furthermore, CQM publishes the newsletter

Centro de Química da Madeira

Activity Report 2006

“Memento”, maintains CQM´s website (50 accesses/day in 2006) and has a regular service of press

releases. As a result, often makes the news in the regional media. At the least, 10 short news and 3 big

interviews (4 coloured pages in the Sunday newspaper supplement of “Diário de Notícias da Madeira”)

were published in 2006. The total estimated time spent by the local TV station with information about

CQM´s activities, in 2006, was about 5 min in prime time news.

The recognition of the merits of CQM members was also shown by the appointment of Prof. Pedro Pires

as a National Expert attached to the European Commission in Brussels (Unit of Micro and Nanosystems)

and by the invitation of Prof. João Rodrigues to stay, as a visitant professor at the NanoScience Center

(Univ. de Jyvaskyla, Finland).

Due to the growth of CQM during the period 2004-2006 a reorganization is being implemented to

strengthen the internal (in UMa) and external image of CQM, establish internal and external

collaborations, increase the engagement of regional entities in CQM projects and explore at the

maximum the potential uses of our new equipments (NMR and LCMSMS). In this scope, a portfolio of

services readily available for the regional community is under preparation. The creation of five (5)

Research and Development Labs (the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Lab, the Coordination

Chemistry and Molecular Materials Lab, the Enology and Analytical Chemistry Lab, the Molecular

Modeling Lab and the Organic Chemistry and Natural Products Lab) inside CQM is also already being

implemented.

1.3 OUTLOOK

The trajectory followed so far confirm the statement made by the evaluation panel of the proposal

presented by CQM to the National Program for Re-Equipment; the panel described CQM as “… a good

group that deserves support now. This project is very good and needs to be supported in the frame of a

general policy which will recognize the national interest to provide the Madeira Chemistry with large

equipment.”. In fact, we believe that his report reveals a potential for growing (both scientifically and

in what concerns the relations with the surrounding society) in the next years. This will certainly be

reinforced with the availability, in 2007, of the new “big” equipments attributed to CQM (NMR and

LCMSMS).

However, for the concretization of such growth during 2007 and the following years, we are aware

that we must:

• Consolidate the areas of intervention of the Research labs

• Actively search and establish partnerships with groups and institutions that complement the

activities of the existing Labs and groups at CQM (in Portugal and abroad)

• Reinforce the scientific cooperation between members of CQM

Centro de Química da Madeira

Activity Report 2006

• Get support (from FCT and from other institutions) for the regular maintenance of the new

equipments (NMR and LCMSMS)

As our main goals we want to:

• Raise our number of papers by year. An average of two (2) papers/Ph. D./year should be our

target for the next years (2006: 1.6 paper/Ph. D.)

• Raise our average impact factor (2006: 2.0 (21 publications with impact factor in 23 published

papers); 2005: 1.9 (7 publications); the average impact factor of our University in 2006 was 1.4

• Reinforce the engagement with regional entities and private companies

• Reinforce the critical mass in terms of human resources and equipments

• Organize advanced training programs together with other national and international institutions

in the field of Natural Products and Materials

• To have the resources to hire an NMR expert to reinforce our research staff

Finally, we hope that the activities described in this report and the new phase of development to be

achieved with the installation, during 2007, of the NMR and LCMSMS equipments will convince the

funding entities, namely FCT and UMa, to continue their support to the CQM. Only with that we will be

able to pursuit our mission.

3. Research team

At the end of 2006, the CQM was constituted by 14 Ph. D. members, one more than in 2005 (Table 1

and 2), 6 Ph. D. students (Table 2), 6 co-workers, several undergraduate and graduate students (Table

3) and one administrative staff member in a total of 31 team members. 5 of the Post-docs and 4 Ph. D.

students were directly financed trough FCT fellowships. Two of the collaborators (also former students

of the Chemistry Department/UMa) continue their studies outside Madeira: one is doing the Ph. D. at

the University of Bordeaux (France) and the other is a Master student at the University of Lisbon.

Due to the results of the Post-doc and Ph D. grant proposals as well as the CQM recruitments strategy,

together with the installation of the NMR and LCMSMS during the year of 2007, we expect to increase

the number of Ph. D. members by, at least, two and the Ph D. student’s number by three.

6. Publications

During the year of 2006, the research center has published a total number of 23 papers and one

proceeding. Seven (7) more papers have already been accepted to be published in 2007 and other 12

papers were submitted by the end of 2006.

It is important to stress that in 2004, the first year of activity with financial support of FCT, the 9

eligible members of the team have published 7 papers in international journals (ca. 0.8 paper/team

member). In 2005, with a significant increase of the number of eligible members (13), we published 7

papers (ca. 0.5 paper/team member) and one proceeding. In 2006, and considering the team of 14

eligible members presented 23 published papers (an average number of ca. 1.6 paper/team members).

This increase in the number of publications in 2006 (with an average impact factor of 2.0) and in the

number of oral and poster presentations, respectively 16 and 41, reflects the huge effort that we have

done during the last years. Considering the number of publications from 2004 to 2006 a average of 12.3

papers/year or 1 paper/team member (average of 12 Ph. D./year) was achieved.

Currently, the installation of the NMR is under way and the process for the acquisition of the LCMSMS

will be launched very soon. We expect that the main effect of the existence of these equipments at

Centro Química da Madeira will be only visible in the next year (2008). According to this, our main

objective for the current year is to maintain or slightly increase the number of publications (25-30

papers) as well as to increase the average impact factor. This prevision is based on the number of

papers already accepted and submitted, as well as on the number of oral presentations and posters

presented during 2006.

7. Funding

Since its creation in 2004, CQM had the support of FCT and received a budget proportional to the rating

obtained in the evaluation and to the number of Ph. D. in the research team (Pluri-annual Programme:

€ 43 200).

From 2004 untill the end of December 2006, the CQM was also involved in research projects (national

projects funded by FCT, AdI and other financial sources; international projects in the scope of the

program INTERREG IIIB; FCT grants) totalizing a value ca. of € 2.636.000 (a total amount that

considers the budget of all partners involved), besides its involvement in the two national networks of

NMR and MS (that correspond to a total budget of € 9.800.000). From these project amounts that

includes Pluri-annual Programme, about € 1.812.000 were directly managed by CQM members and

applied in their research activities.

From Figure 4, which shows the distribution of CQM financial resources by type, we can conclude that

the income managed by CQM equally came from European projects, national projects, FCT grants

(Ph.D. and Post-Doc grants) and the re-equipment projects (national networks of NMR and MS). Even if,

during the period 2004-2006, the support received through the Pluri-annual Programme only represents

2% of the total budget managed by CQM, this support, in addition to the human resources funds, was

undoubtedly fundamental for the normal running of the unit research activities.
