A bright little café on a bright afternoon, a cup of coffee or
tea, biscuits, crosswords and chats, all makes for a simple
relaxing afternoon at the Age UK Friendship Group. From
around 12:30pm every Monday, people from this Friendship
group start to walk into the café of Warwick Road Church
Centre. June says: “We talk, laugh, joke, and sometimes
dance and sing for fun,” “Barry always looks after us with
lovely biscuits and treats all the time”. When you are in this
group, you’ll realise doing crosswords together could never
be more fun. When asked what they usually do at the
friendship club, everyone started to joke: “We cheat at the
quiz!”
New faces are often seen amongst these old friends and
they are always warmly welcomed. Friendships have been
gradually built in this club. As Walter says, it’s “a good gath-
ering and you know more about people.” During the whole
time, everyone talks to one another and has a good laugh
all together. “We don’t stop laughing”, Christina told us, as
she thinks meeting new friends is the biggest difference
this club has made to her life. Many others think the same.
Andrew says: “It gets me out and meeting people.” Indeed,
time spent with friends like this would give happiness to
anyone’s daily life. Although Glenda has a family to take
care of at home, she believes “it is a break from home life”
and “we look forward to Mondays”. Margret also men-
tioned something similar: “It gives me something to look
forward to”. For them, this short Monday afternoon is like a
little utopia where they can relax and laugh freely.
So why not come along and join them? You can enjoy laugh-
ing together with your new friends over a cup of tea, apart
from being warmly welcomed.
