DESCRIPTION OF THE KINESTHETIC METHOD
Activity: ”CARDINAL POINTS”
No. Parts Description
1. Subject Romanian language
2. Age 11-15
3. Time 20-30 min.
4. Materials 20 students. Small boards with the cardinal points, glass bowl, notes,
quadrant file, word notes, PC, audio speakers.
5. Organisation Individual, group work
6. Aim To revise and consolidate the notions concerning semantic
categories.
7. Preparation Four mini-boards to write the cardinal points and the instructions on,
a bowl to put the notes with the cardinal points in (five for each), a piece of paper describing the method of the quadrants for each group, notes with various words, to which the students will have to
find the synonyms, the antonyms, the homonyms and the paronyms.
8. Procedure 1. The mini-boards with the cardinal points will be placed on the
classroom floor and in the middle there will be a bowl with their initials written on notes (five notes for each cardinal point). At each
cardinal point there will be five notes with various words.
2. The students are told to take a note from the bowl and, depending
on the initial on the note, to go to the required cardinal point. They will have to go there by hopping on one foot. The tasks for each
cardinal point are as follows:
North-synonyms
East-homonyms
South-antonyms
West-paronyms.
3. Each group receives a piece of paper with four quadrants (in
relation to the four cardinal points).
4. After taking a note from the bowl, each student will hop on one
foot to the required cardinal point. Thus we will have the four groups. One student from each group holds the piece of paper with
the quadrants. On it the answers of the group will be written down. Upon giving the answer, they will write it down in the quadrant that corresponds to the cardinal point. Then, they will put the note back
to its place, faced down. The students will perform their tasks on a
musical background.
5. When the music stops, the groups will move to another cardinal point, again hopping on one foot. If any members of the group don’t hop, they will be disqualified. The movement of the groups is done
clockwise. The students will perform the tasks and write down the answers in the corresponding quadrants. They will repeat this routine
until all groups arrive at their initial place.
6. Check the answers given by each group. They will have to find
synonyms, antonyms, homonyms and paronyms for five different words, which means that each group has to have 20 correct answers.
The group with the most correct answers wins.

10. Variation This method can be applied for any subject, especially at the stage of reviewing, consolidating or evaluating. You will need inovative ideas in order to write down the right instructions, taking into
consideration the subject they will be applied to.
