    Conserving thediversityof lifeon Earth iscriticalto globalhumanwelfare.     refers to outstanding physical,biologicalor geologicalfeatures andincludes habitatsof threatened species,as well as areas withscientific,environmentaloraestheticvalue.Mixedsiteshave both cultural and naturalvalues.

    TheWorld Heritageemblemsymbolizestheinterdependenceofthe worldsnatural andculturaldiversity.The centralsquarerepresentstheachievementsof humanskill andinspiration,andthe circlecelebratesthegifts ofnature.The emblemis round,liketheworld,asymbolofglobalprotec-tionfor theheritageof allhumankind.

    rom the vast plains of the Serengeti to historic cities suchas Vienna, Lima and Kyoto; from the prehistoric rock arton the Iberian Peninsula to the Statue of Liberty; from theKasbah of Algiers to the Imperial Palace in Beijing all

    he United Nations Educational, Scientific and CulturalOrganization (UNESCO) works with countries aroundthe world to identify and protect cultural and naturalplaces that merit recognition as part of the common

    heritage of humankind. UNESCO adopted the Conventionconcerning the Protection of the World Cultural and NaturalHeritage in 1972. Since then, 186 countries have ratified thetreaty, and at present 890 properties are inscribed on the List 689 of which are cultural, 176 natural and 25 mixed (acombination of the two). They are noted here in alphabeticalorder by country and in the order they were listed.
