For example, volcanic eruptions arebelieved to be important in enriching soils to grow crops. Volcanic ash often contains minerals that are beneficial to plants. There are even countries where people live close to volcanoes and use the rich soils nearby. These countries includeIndonesia,Philippines,JapanandItaly. Then, did you know shouting or yelling does not trigger an avalanche? An avalanche centre in the United States of Americasaidthatin90percentofavalanchedeaths,itwastheweightofapersonthattriggeredtheavalanche.Inotherwords, walking in the wrong spot may cause a fracture in the snowpack and unleash a torrent of snow. Most avalanches occur 24 hours after a rapid, heavy snowfall. Last but not least, did you know that although earthquakes can create crevasses or cracks in the ground, they will not open up faults and swallow up people and cities in their path? A fault line is a place where there is a break that is longer than usual in the layers of rock in the earth’s crust. You may have watched a film or read a book where a fault opens during an earthquake and swallows up a villain. However, that’s an inaccurate depiction of earthquakes.

Graphic Novel(Suggested answer)The Swiss Family RobinsonThecharacterthatIfindinterestinginthestory‘TheSwissFamilyRobinson’ is Mr Robinson. After being shipwrecked, most people would panic. Instead,Mr Robinson takes charge of the situationto take careof his family. For example, he instructshis family tobuild pens for the animals and a tent for themselves. Yet, he already plans to find a suitable place to build a more permanent home. He is always thinking of ways to ensure the safety of his family. Besides that, he is also an intelligent man who values counselfrom his family. For example, when his wife suggests that theybuild a tree house, he agrees to it because he knows that it would be safer for them.Besides that,MrRobinson also focuseson thepositiveaspectsofhislife.Forexample, despitebeingstrandedonan island, he is grateful that his family is together and alive. He also takes moments to celebrate Christmas and give praise to God that they are alive. He does not spend his time complaining about the circumstances of their situation. Inconclusion,MrRobinson isan interestingcharacter. He isa brave person who will go above and beyond for his family.

King ArthurThecharacter that I find interesting in the story ‘KingArthur’ isLancelot. Not only is he strong and brave, but he is also forgiving and loyal. Forexample,Lancelotproveshimselftobethestrongestknightin the whole country. Initially, everyone thinks that Gawain isthe strongest. However, Lancelot is brave enough to step out and fight Gawain to prove his worth. Despite the fact that everyone is cheering for Gawain, Lancelot does not feel disheartened by it because he knows and believes in himself and his abilities. Besides that, Lancelot proves himself to be a very forgivingandloyalperson.Forexample, thankstowhispersfromMordred,

Arthur banishes him from Camelot. However, when Mordred usurps the throne, Lancelot is more than willing to lay down his lifetofightforhisKing.InspiteofwhatArthurhasdone,Lancelotfightsathisside.Intheend,eventheKingentrustsLancelotwiththe task of finding the most important person in his life, Guinevere and taking care of her. Due to his loyalty to the King, LancelotneverabandonedhisdutytohisKingandbestfriend.Thisshowswithout a doubt that Lancelot is a forgiving and loyal person.

20 000 Leagues Under the SeaThecharacter that I find interesting in the story ‘20 000LeaguesUndertheSea’ isCaptainNemo.IfindCaptainNemointerestingbecause he is an unusual man with unusual beliefs. He is also extremely intelligent and articulate. For example, Captain Nemo is obviously a very shy andsceptical man, which is not uncommon. However, he takes it to a whole new level by building and living in a submarine called the Nautilus. He also proves to be an extreme person because he does not intend to let anyone who knows about his ship leave. He is stuck in his beliefs that humans are cruel and refuses to be a part of civilisation anymore. This makes him an unusual character. Besides that, Captain Nemo proves to be a very intelligentcharacter. He built the Nautilus on his own. Besides that, hespeaks many languages and has been to places most people do not know exist. Captain Nemo’s adventures make him an even more interesting and fascinating character. Besides that, Captain Nemo’s personality seems to be splitin two. He has the compassionate side which he shows when he cries while burying his fellow crewman. However, he also has his heartless side which he shows when he sinks the warship at the end with no regrets. This makes him even more interesting as it is difficult to identify him as a good or bad character.

Tips to Stay Safe during a TsunamiIn 2004, therewas a tsunami and certain states inMalaysiawereaffected. Although a tsunami can be scary and dangerous, we can protect ourselves against it. Therearemanywaystostaysafe.Firstly, ifwelivenearthesea,we should always be aware of the signs of potential tsunami. One of the signs of a tsunami is the quick rising or decreasing of water along the coast. Animals such as the birds will flee in the opposite directionofthewater.Weshouldalsotuneintothelocalwarningsystems. Once a tsunami has been verified by monitoring stations, the authorities will issue a tsunami warning. Then you and your family should evacuate to higher ground. Try to move at least three kilometres away from the coast or a hundredfeetabovesealevel.Itisnotrecommendedforustoclimbup any trees before or during a tsunami. However, if we cannot head for the higher ground, we should do that to survive a tsunami. Weshouldmoveashighupwepossiblycan. Weshouldonlyreturntotheaffectedareasoncetheauthoritieshave signalled an all clear. This is because one of the biggest dangers of a tsunami is the chance of continued tsunamis.Question 7(Suggested answer)The Swiss Family RobinsonIn ‘The Swiss Family Robinson’, my favourite character is MrRobinson. He is my favourite character because he is determined, resourceful and cares for his family. Whenthefamilyisshipwrecked,MrRobinsondoesnotdespairand neither does he give up. Although the family is abandoned to their fate by their captain and the crew, Mr Robinson makes the best of the situation. Together with his two older sons, he takes whatever provisions they can get from the ship and brings everything to an island where they have taken refuge. The family lives on the provisions until they can find other sources of food. Mr Robinson is resourceful too, as he builds a raft using the wood from the island. He and his son then use the raft to go and take more provisions from the ship. Mr Robinson also builds a tree house for them to live in. He builds the tree house in order to protecthisfamilyfromthewildanimalsoftheisland.Furthermore,Mr Robinson has taken guns from the ship to protect him and his family, and also to hunt for food. This shows that he cares for his family. IfeelthatMrRobinsonisindeedanadmirablecharacterasheis determined, resourceful and cares deeply for his family.

20 000 Leagues Under the SeaIn20000LeaguesundertheSea,myfavouritecharacterisProfessorAronnax. He is my favourite character because he is optimistic, friendly and curious. Professor Aronnax is on a search expedition to find and kill the ‘sea creature’ which has been attacking merchant ships and steamers. The ‘sea creature’ turned out to be a submarine called the Nautilus. Professor Aronnax, his servant, Conseil and Ned Land, a master harpooner are then caught by Captain Nemo, the captain of the Nautilus.EventhoughProfessorAronnaxisnothappyaboutbeinga prisoner, he remains optimistic and made the best of the situation. Friendliness is another admirable quality of the Professor.Whenhe is capturedbyCaptainNemo, hedoesnot immediatelyargue with the Captain. Instead he builds a good relationshipwith Captain Nemo. Along their journey he soon realises that the Captain is actually a good man as he treats them well. Professor Aronnax was also a curious man. He uses the opportunity to learn about the ocean when on broad the Nautilus. While travelling in the submarine he sees and learns a lot ofvaluable things about the ocean. The Professor records everything down in his journal. Professor Aronnax is my favourite character because instead of complaining and being miserable about being a prisoner he used the situation to learn about the ocean. He also made friends with his captor, Captain Nemo and gained his trust.

DearKamarul, IjustreadyourletterandIamdeeplyconcernedaboutyourproblem. You seem to be very stressed out.

All of us experience stress. However, it is important for us to try and relieve our stress. You must relieve your stress or you might end up getting sick and that is only going to add to your problems. When you feel stressed, try watching sitcoms or funnyvideos. Laughter can help you calm down and relieve your stress. This is because laughter releases endorphins that improve themood and decrease levels of the stress-causing hormones.Listening to classical music is also helpful in relieving stress. According to research, playing calm music will help to relax your mind and body. Anotherwaytodecreaseyourstressisbyexercising.Ifyoufeel stressed after doing your homework or studying, just go for a walk around the neighbourhood or simply stand up to stretch. Calling up a friend, too, can be great stress reliever. Having someone listen to your problems might help you to relieve your stress. Ihavetopenoffnow.Hopeyoufeelbettersoon. Your friend, Azian

King ArthurIn the graphic novel ‘King Arthur’, there is an event I findunforgettable. It is the moment when Arthur and Lancelot faceMordred in battle. Firstly, Mordred sneaks up on Arthur andmanages to destroy Arthur’s sword. Arthur is completely stunned that Mordred is able to break his sword. Taking advantage of his shock, Mordred strikes Arthur. However, before Mordred could finish him off, Lancelot and the knights appear. Lancelot manages to find Mordred and defeat him. Then, the dying Arthur asks Lancelottothrowawayhissword, findGuinevereandprotecther.Ifind the event unforgettable because it clearly shows the importance of loyalty between Lancelot and Arthur. Despite everything that Arthur had done to Lancelot, Lancelot still rides to help Arthur. This event also shows that we have to be careful of whom we trust. Arthur easily believes Morgan and Mordred’s lies, which leads to him betraying Lancelot.
