Winter brings the areas’ ski resorts alive, from the Berkshire Mountains to nearby Vermont, which is home to many of the East Coast’s top ski resorts. Efficient snow plowing helps ensure the areas’ attractions are as accessible in winter as they are in the summer. In the northern Pioneer Valley you will find many die-hard Red Sox and Patriots fans who regularly drive to Boston to experience the Green Monster or head to Foxboro to catch a Pats’ game live. DEERFIELD: If the rustic Americana of a small town is your style, Deerfield (population 4,700) is a quiet farming town with colonial homes and plenty of land. Deerfield is home to internationally renowned Deerfield Academy, as well as the Bement School and Eaglebrook School. Deerfield also has a reputation for its excellent public schools. Deerfield borders Greenfield, allowing for a quick commute to Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

GREENFIELD: Known for its charming, locally owned shops on Main Street and easy access to Interstate 91, Greenfield is a midsized city (population 17,400) with affordable historic houses and a booming arts community. The cost of housing in Franklin County is much lower than in other parts of the state, and sizeable properties are readily available.

Greenfield has long been a center for environmental activity, with many area residents advocating for clean energy, locally grown food and sustainable communities. Home to Greenfield Community College and excellent private schools such as Stoneleigh-Burnham School and Northfield Mount Hermon (in nearby Gill), Greenfield is a very family-friendly city. Baystate Franklin Medical Center is located in Greenfield.

SHELBURNE FALLS: A popular place to call home for our Greenfield providers, Shelburne Falls (population 4,300) is located on the Mohawk Trail at the edge of the Berkshire foothills. This quiet artist community is home to the beautiful Bridge of Flowers, nationally recognized glassblowers, and many artists and writers. Shelburne Falls is a scenic 15-minute drive from Baystate Franklin Medical Center.

AMHERST AND NORTHAMPTON: Collectively known as the Five College Area, Northampton and Amherst are home to Smith College, The University of Massachusetts, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke and Amherst College. Amherst (population 34,000) and Northampton (population 28,500) both have vibrant downtown areas. The streets are lined with fantastic restaurants representing many nationalities, as well as shops and galleries, making these great places to raise a family or simply spend a weekend afternoon. Both cities are approximately 20 minutes from Baystate Franklin Medical Center.
