Adolescent Health Promotion Work Carried out by BGS World School, Chickballapur,

Karnataka Since 2015: A ReportWg Cdr Ranjit Kumar Mandal

Introduction

The Karnataka Chapter of Indian Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH-K) was established on November 22, 2015. The Principal of BGS World School, Chickballapur, Karnataka Wg Cdr Ranjit Kumar Mandal joined the association as its founding Joint Secretary. Immediately after this on November 24, 2015 the BGS World School, Chickballapur launched its ‘School Health Programme’ through a ceremony in which the Secretary General of the association Dr Jugal Kishore and also the Director Professor, Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College, New Delhi was present as it chief guest and the chief speaker. Since the day of launching the programme the school has carried out several activities in the school as per guidelines provided by the Indian Association for Adolescent Health, New Delhi. The school programmes incorporated all students and staff members in its coverage as their beneficiaries. A summary of the work is being presented in this report for the period from the beginning up to August 2018 i.e., a period of 2 years 9 months.

Details of the people covered in Various Programmes

The school has been subjecting its students to the physical health check since its inception 2008 and after it launched its ‘School Health Programme’ since 2015 it started checking the mental health also of the students. And gradually the school started carrying out several surveys and conducting workshops for students and staff as per their needs. The types of checks, surveys and workshops the school conducted level wise are mentioned below:

The data collection task was undertaken very meticulously by the school staff and the principal of the school involved himself in compilation of the paper as their co-author. Receipt of Dr Gulian Award

One student of the school named Miss Shushumna (X) was awarded Dr Gulian Gold Medal from IAAH for her contribution towards adolescent health promotion for the year 2017. Miss Shushumna S was awarded the medal during the International Conference on Adolescent Health in Delhi on 14 April 2017. She and another student named Rakshitha B Gowda (X) delivered their speeches in the conference to express their experience on adolescent health promotion work.

Inclusion of Adolescent Health Related Panel Discussion in ASISC Conferences

Association for Indian School Certificate is an all India association of the schools affiliated under the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations. It is the largest national level Council affiliated schools’ association, second being the Association for the Anglo-Indian Schools of India. The association has about 2000 member schools and it organizes a national conference for three days at different selected place every year. The BGS World School, Chiciballapur being a member of the association Wg Cdr Ranjit Kumar Mandal requested the office bearers of the association to have a lecture session on adolescent health and got a one-hour lecture session arranged in 2014. Again in 2017, Wg Cdr

Mandal provided four panelists to speak on adolescent health on the topic ‘Leading Schools towards Happy Classrooms and Healthy Minds’. The chairperson for the panel was Dr Jugal Kishore, the Secretary General, Indian Association for Adolescent Health. The other three panelists were from the field of Mental Health, Nutrition and Cyber Related Hazard for health. The three-day conference was held from 29 Nov 2017 to 01 Dec 2017. After the conference, Wg Cdr Mandal has also written an article which is due for its release in the ‘Journal of Advance Research in English and Education’ for its publication (Vol 3, Issue 3, July – Sep 2018). The contents of the article have already been placed in the website of the Association (ASISC).

Awareness of Rabies

The process of the work this year started with carrying out of a surveys of awareness on Rabies among the students of the school. The students were given two-page questionnaire to reveal their awareness and knowledge about Rabies. The students from VII to X classes numbering 320 were subjected and out of which 50.5% were male and 49.5% female. The maximum children subjected in the test were of 14 years of age (45.6%) and about 35% parents of the subject students were professionals. A research paper titled ‘The State of Awareness about Rabies among School Children in a School of Rural Karnataka’ was jointly authored by the principal and was presented by him in the ‘20th National Conference of Association for Prevention & Control of Rabies in India’ which was held in New Delhi from 06 to 08 July 2018. The Principal presented the paper on 07 Jul 2018.

The findings the paper revealed that 98.1% students of the school knew about rabies and they also knew that rabies was mostly transmitted by dog bite. The students also reported that the major source of their information was the school. The survey found out that 26.2% students were covered by anti-rabies vaccine in the past. 20.3% of the students reported that they received equal to or less than 5 doses of vaccine. While 78% students did not know the number of doses they received, 76.7% of students did not remember the site of vaccination. The authors of concluded by mentioning that there was a urgent need to make the adolescents aware about the guidelines on animal bite cases, management and importance of rabies vaccination.

Recent Medical Check carried out in the School

In the current academic session, the process started with annual medical check of 1425 students of the school. Sri Satya Sai Grama of Chickballapur, a centre for social service, has provided a team of doctors to conduct Physical Health Check this year. During the three days’ medical check on 27 and 28 June 2018 and 12 July 2018 a team of doctors numbering 18, 40 and 18 doctors respectively did the thorough medical check. During the check 571, students have been observed to be having some problems or the other. The findings of check have been the following:

The observations of the doctors were communicated to the parents for taking medical treatment. It is expected that the parents would soon confirm medical treatment of the students and submit relevant documents to the school.

Workshop on Eye Care

In order to make the students and teachers of the school aware of the signs of eye ailment, their precaution and ways of eye care a workshop was organized in the school on August 28, 2018. Dr Soumya, an ophthalmologist, took two sessions separately for VI & VII and VIII – X class students. The doctor advised them to consult a physician in case of any eye ailment without delay and to take nutritious food.

Recent Mental and Social Health Survey in the School

The students from VII to X class numbering 350 were subjected to the mental and social health check also on 29 June 2018 using the questionnaire designed by the Indian Association for Adolescent Health. The data analysis job of the survey has been undertaken by Akash Medical College, Debanahalli, Karnataka.

Hosting of Meetings of IAAH

The principal of the school has also sponsored the annual General Body meetings of the ‘Indian Association for Adolescent Health, Karnataka’ in the year 2016 and 2017 in Bangalore. On both the occasions, he organized the presence of Dr Jugal Kishore, the Secretary General, Indian Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH) who came from New Delhi.

The first meeting of the association of the year 2018 has also been arranged by him in collaboration with ‘The Kempe Gowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS)’, Bangalore on 09 Jun 2018. As the meeting was attended by the non-member professionals from the field of medicine and education, he made a comprehensive presentation highlighting the aim of the association. He also presented an account of the work done by the IAAH-K. He, as the Joint Secretary of the Association, helped the Chairperson to draw an action plan of the association for the year 2018-19.

Wg Cdr Mandal held a brief meeting with the IAAH Secretary General Dr Jugal Kishore and the President, IAAK (Karnataka Chapter) Dr Muddassir Hussain Khan in Delhi on 07 Jul 2018 in New Delhi where they had met while attending the 20th National Conference of Association for Prevention & Control of Rabies in India. They discussed about future action plan of the association.

Wg Cdr Mandal had taken initiatives and conducted another meeting for the members on August 11, 2018 in collaboration with ‘The Kempe Gowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS)’, Bangalore from which the HOD and two Professors have become member of the Association in the month of June 2018. The meeting was attended by the president of the association Dr Muddassir Hussain and several other members. In the meeting, the house chalked out an annual programme for the medical test of the schools and took the responsibility of the work as the following:

Wg Cdr Mandal also had a meeting with the Mr Ali Sait, CEO, M/S Tech Avante Garde, a Bngalore based partner company of M/S Microsoft Ltd., to include compliance of adolescent health care requirements in the future school accreditation programme of school which would be rolled out by M/S Microsoft Ltd. in near future.

Conclusion

It has been observed that over the years the students of BGS World School have been doing well while studying in this school or in their higher education. The school has also planned to undertake more programme for the students in the current year 2018. The school principal has also been making his efforts of spreading the activities in different dimensions. It is expected that the school would benefit its own students and the students of the community for ‘a better tomorrow’.
