Wyckoff Reform Church and parking lot closing dates:

There will be no parking, no loading of tour bus, etc. in the parking lot on: Wednesday and Thursday, April 26 & 27, 2017.

As always, all club chairmen are reminded that if you have any activity in the church including parking in the church lot and/or loading a tour bus to please check with Sue (and the church calendar) for any conflicts before arrangements are made.

Our guests for the Decem-ber meeting will be "The Choristers.” This group from the NJ Choral Society will entertain us with holi-day favorites. It should be a memorable performance. Please note that the perfor-mance will be in the Church itself, next to Ha-neveld Hall. Spouse and significant others are invited.

This will be my last “Note from the President” to the AU members. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of you for allowing me to serve in this position. It’s been a challenge, but it’s also been a lot of fun. We have accom-plished a great deal this past year, thanks to the support of our members. I wish I could name all the people who have unselfishly contributed throughout the year, but there just isn’t enough room to do that here. Obviously, the Executive Board and all the Club Chairmen, who are the backbone of our organization, have greatly influenced our suc-cess. I am proud to be part of Activities Unlimited. When the year began, we set some goals. I am happy to report that many of these goals have been met. For example, there was no increase in AU annual dues, AU membership increased to 385 (the highest number in our club’s history), we added a new Photo Ros-ter (thanks to the efforts of John Abrahamsen), we held special meetings every month to welcome new members, we started 2 new clubs (Photography and a Lunch Club), for the first time we now have Co-Chairmen for all the AU Clubs, we moved to a nicer venue for the Rubber Bridge Club (with wheelchair access), we now have an AU Ban-ner, we helped create a great video meeting room on the 3rd floor of the WRC, we have new AU Golf shirts available to all our members, Mike Hurd’s TD Bank effor t has launched a new revenue stream for AU, John Abrahamsen stepped up to give us the best AU database information we have ever had, and we even had a free Pizza lunch at one of our monthly meetings. Finally, I must mention the outstanding job that John Murphy and Bill Mastellon con-tinue to do with our annual Christmas Party, which is the AU highlight event of the year. So, yes, the year included a lot of hard work, fun and excitement while being a very productive year. We should all be very proud of the many members who contributed to this year’s success. Again, I want personally thank everyone for their ongoing support, and I look forward to seeing you all at the AU Christmas Party.

For our November 15, 2016 meeting, nine members enjoyed our car pool trip to the Museum of Natural History -- we saw the titanosaur exhibit, IMAX Wonders of the Arctic, and the Dark Universe planetarium presentation -thanks to Dave Ingersoll for dr iving. Hopefully, someone will offer to organize a similar trip next year.

There will be no meeting in December. At our Tuesday, January 17, 2017 meeting, Dr. Cauchard will return to update us on Conditions of the Eye. His previ-ous visits have been most informational--Note: the specific time will be based upon his schedule and indicated at a later time. Also, we need speakers starting with the February meeting next year. Thanks again to those who made presentations this year as well as those who attended our meetings. The Book Club

At the November meeting we discussed the following 3 books: Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart, presented by Jerry Hulit, is a true story that takes place in Wyckoff during 1914. It focuses on Constance Kopp, the oldest of three daughters, whose buggy is crashed into by a motorcar driven by the owner of a Paterson silk factory owner and her subsequent quest for damages while undergoing a series of threats and attacks by him and his cronies. She enlists the help of the local sheriff who helps her in trying to seek justice. An inter-esting look into farm life along Sicomac Road in those days and the tenacious resolve of a wronged woman. The Oath by Jeffrey Toobin, summarized by Tom Butler, looks into the workings of the US Supreme Court, with empha-sis during the Obama administration and the perspective differences between Chief Justice Roberts and the Presi-dent. It discusses a number of cases as well as the personalities currently serving the Court. A readily understandable look at some legal issues while also recognizing the human effort that wrestles with them. The Rise of the Robots by Martin Ford, described by Ed O'Keeffe, looks into the world of technology and how it has transformed our and the world's economy and the probable difficulties it brings with job displacement. The author raises the concern that whereas previously machines were used as tools, today they replace workers and do not spawn new industries. The subsequent discussion provided diverse viewpoints, one offering that the book suggested a bleak future with an impending shortage of jobs while the other that it presented a challenging opportunity that man will ultimately solve. New AU Activity Group

Have you played racquetball or tennis in the past? Would you like to resume? There is a group of mostly retired men that play racquetball three times a week (MWF) at the Odyssey Athletic Center in Waldwick at around 8 a.m. The group is friendly, and the play is enjoyable and competitive. We play singles, cut throat (2 on 1), and doubles depending upon how many show up. It’s loosely organized and we can have anywhere from four to all twelve participate. Be-cause of travel, snowbirds, injury, or whatever we would welcome more players. The camaraderie among the people in the group is outstanding and over the years I’ve made some very good friend-ships. Although the play is competitive it’s respectful. We occasionally get a player that’s new to racquetball and we’re reasonably patient in getting them up to speed. The fees at the center are not bad; about $50 per month for unlimited play, and the use of the fitness center and pro-grams. Three in our group are AU members. 2017 AU Stock Picking Contest

We will again be running the Stock Picking Contest for the 2017 calendar year. The $5 entry fee, Cash only—No checks, should be mailed to: Don Chucka, 789 McCoy Rd., Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417. Stock picks for the contest must be submitted by December 31, 2016 to: Don Fairbairn by e-mail [email protected] or to John Abrahamsen e-mail: [email protected]. You have a fictitious $100,000 to invest. Pick 3 to 5 stocks or ETFs and invest an amount from $10,000 to $33,333 for each pick. Invest the entire $100,000. Rules and entry forms will be handed out at the December 13th AU general meeting, or may be requested by e-mail from Don Fairbairn — [email protected] or to John Abrahamsen –email: [email protected]. Prizes will be awarded at the end of year as follows: 1st place $50 2nd place $25 3rd place $15 Last place $10 Additionally, contestants whose portfolio achieves the highest per-centage gain in a month shall receive a $5 monthly prize.

Report of Invest- ment Study Group Meeting of Nov 10, 2016 Dr. Lieberman noted that the media gives us a very distorted and short term view of markets and the economy. He said that their distortions are done to create sensations to attract viewers in order to attract advertising dollars. Can't argue with that. He gave us a hopeful view of the economy and markets: Labor is doing well with falling unemployment & rising job openings, rising house prices, low personal debt, stock forward P/Es in line, dividend yields up, & 10 year Treasuries low. To get a clearer view of the economy he looks at Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports (http://www.bls.gov/bls/newsrels.htm#OEUS) BLS Employment Situation Report BLS Unemployment Rate BLS Unemployment Claims BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover (JOLTS) His charts showed that he talks a long view of the statistics. His lead-off report was the Employment Situation Report. Investopedia says this about the report.

"Economists have settled on the number of 150,000 jobs as the level that defines economic growth. Gains of roughly 150,000 jobs or more indicate expansion of the labor force, while anything below indicates a weak job market."

By this measure The Great Recession started in Apr. '07 and lasted until Apr. '10. That's four years instead of the usual year and a half of Dec '07 to Jun. '09. The BLS reports are also useful because they are reported monthly while the GDP is reported quarterly. The Employment Situation Report is given on the first Friday of each month. It can be a market mover. Data is subject to revision in the following month. Sometimes the revisions are significant. For example the in report of this November the September the “Nonfarm Payroll Change” was revised 22% upward.

Public Discussion Group

AU Member Ken Lockhart passed away on October 22, 2016. Phyllis Fairbairn, wife of AU member Donald Fairbairn, passed away peace-fully on Tuesday, October 25, 2016.

Happy Birthday John John DeSantis, active AU member and leader of our AU Guys' band turns 80 this month. He has threatened to step down as leader of the band after many years, but promises to remain a part of the organization as our very good 1st Sax player. Born in North Bergen in 1936 (by mid-wife by his own admission), John attended Union Hill H.S learning the Sax and playing baseball. Fairleigh Dickenson followed with a continuation of baseball and was one of the originators of the university's Varsity Club. The college years were followed by marriage to Barbara Young and three years in the U.S. Coast Guard after successfully finishing OCS in New London, Connecticut. Following three years in Norfolk, John and Barbara returned to New Jersey with a son, John Jr. and a daughter, Carolyn. They had two more children, Jo-Anne and Christopher, and bought a house in Wood-Ridge. Barbara sadly passed after a brain hemorrhage leaving John with the four children. John's professional world included Hess Oil, Pacific Molasses Co. and finally Dom-ino Sugar where he became National Accounts Manager for Grocery and Food Ser-vice. John married Alice (Firehock) after two years pursuit and Alice inherited John and four children. John joined AU in 2001 and assumed the responsibilities for the band shortly thereafter. He plays in the Hobbyists band as well and particularly enjoys our annual luncheon where we play for the entire organization and their wives. He received Ac-tivities Unlimited Distinguished Service Award in 2011. He is active and enjoys Trips and Tours...with both AU and the Hobbyists. I'm not sure John and Alice would re-fuse a trip anywhere. We wish him well and are enriched by his association with us. Bill Byrne

The group enjoyed another stimulating discussion, Topics were: the Presiden-tial election; how do elected officials get rich? and NJ tax policy. In brief, most members agreed Trump should be given a chance, but that many reserva-tions and policy uncertainties remain. The group had a cynical view of politi-cians, namely that many used their positions and “inside information” to enrich themselves. Others noted that while some did abuse their office, most were honest, but caught in a gridlock situation. The NJ tax discussion was brief and focused on the defeat of the “casino” proposition and overwhelming support of the proposition to dedicate all gas tax proceeds to transportation. Enjoy a trip and visit to the Botani-cal Garden Conservatory Exhibits, Holiday Decorations and view the Magnificent “G” scale model locomotives and trains as they zip through an outstanding display of iconic New York sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island and many more.
