EFFECTIVE PUBLIC RELATIONS AND POLITICAL STRATEGIES FORENVIRONMENTAL / ACTIVIST GROUPS

Political Power, Media / Public RelationsEnvironmental activist groups have been most effective by using the US courts

Local organizations have had greatest impact on government environmental

    decision-making and policies.

    Environmental activist groups need to:

employ blue ribbon scientific research to back up claims

network more with other groups [coalition building]

use mass media / public relations more effectively. (Klein, 2007)

Internet / Website Use and Dialog [2-way communication]

Activist organizations websites look professional, are generally easy to navigate,

state organizational goals and purpose clearly, but lack a commitment to

consistent 2-way communication with supporters and new users of their websites.

The goal is to encourage regular communication about, interest in, and support

of, the groups activities and goals. Dialogic communication is key to this goal.

    Activist organizations need to:

Focus on creating opportunities for continuous dialog with theirwebsite users.

    Successful website characteristics:

Ease of navigation (site maps, links)

Chat group forums, opportunities to vote on issues

    Regular and current news updates

    FAQ / Q & A

Regular and current Update on website maintenance info.

Most important: Create dialog, including dissident views.

    o Encourage question and answer / information-seeking. Honor a

commitment to communicate with all users of website.(Taylor, Kent, &

    White, 2001).

Environmental Group Wants More Done To Protect Residents From Bad Air

    KRIS-TV

    updated 10:28 a.m. ET, Fri., Feb. 13, 2009

CORPUS CHRISTI - A local environmental group feels more needs to be done to protect

children who attend schools near the refineries, and the issue was the focus of a meetingWednesday night at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

One of the concerns brought up at the meeting was how close schools, such as Miller

High School, are to the refineries and chemical plants, and the kinds of effects the air hason the children attending those schools.

Another approach will be an interactive presentation and dialogue session that will share

how the Internet, cell phones, microwaves and e-mail have changed the mindset of the

non-churched and the next generation of believers. Attendees will be encouraged to beginto look at what these changes mean to a congregation.
