In a recent editorial in The Lutheran Pastor Peter Marty writes of what Sunday mornings are like in his home. He tells of how he sets three alarm clocks, so he, as pastor, will not be late for church. Of the way the very act of going to church is often inconvenient for his family. And then he writes of the ways it can be inconvenient for others as well. As I was reading the article I was astonished! I thought I was the only pastor whose nightmares featured, not being late for a college class and then realizing it was exam day, but being late for worship and realizing I don’t have a sermon! I also set multiple alarm clocks. Poor Bruce, sometimes I forget to turn them off after I’m up, well before dawn. I also recall what it was like trying to get the children to church at various stages of my life and theirs. When the boys were young, I finally realized that it was best to dress myself last, rather than dress them last. That way I was less likely to show up at church with spit up on my shoulder or frosting from their cinnamon rolls on my back. When Taylor came along, and the boys were older, I was the choir director in our church. And the boys were usually acolytes. So, off we’d go…me to choir

rehearsal, the boys to get ready to acolyte (Sunday School was AFTER worship in our congregation) and Taylor quickly into the nursery. I was usually exhausted before I ever got to church. Some days, we would leave

the house as I barked at everyone that we were GOING TO GET IN THE CAR AND GO TO CHURCH! NOW! When I went to seminary, it was just a little bit harder. Taylor was in first grade when I started seminary and for the first two years I was assigned to a very large congregation for a contextual site. We had three worship services on Sunday morning, back to back. We literally shook hands with the worshipers leaving worship from one service while the next set of worshipers entered by another set of doors. So, to have my kids in Sunday School and our family in worship always happened (even without my, um, encouragement) but I felt very peripheral to it all. I don’t know what it’s like at your house on Sunday mornings. At ours even now, it’s different. Taylor worships at Maple Leaf Lutheran Church because she nannies for their pastor’s toddler daughter during worship. Bruce very patiently turns off those three alarm clocks and comes to LMLC long after I’ve arrived.

But, here’s the important thing and it applies to each and every one of us. Regardless of what it took for you to get to worship…it matters that you are there. Regardless of what breakfast remnants you are wearing or whether your kids have their shirttails tucked in or if there was a bit of “encouragement” on the way, it matters that you are there. It matters to the community of faith as we come together as the body of Christ. It matters to the people who know you and look forward to seeing you and it matters to the people you are just meeting. It matters to me, your pastor, because each one of you are important to me. It will matter to your children. Oh, they might become young adults and decide that church is not their thing, but someday, somewhere along the way…it will matter to them, as well. It matters, as Pastor Marty wrote, because “Worship is for those who know their need for God. We bring our brokenness, not just our togetherness.” And one other thing…your presence in worship matters to you and to me. As believers who also doubt (just like the earliest apostles) our spirits are refreshed through worship, through fellowship, through study and through the very act of deciding that, even though sleeping in on a rainy Seattle Sunday seems like a good idea, participating in the life of our community of faith is an even better one.

Now, PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN, GO PUT YOUR SHIRT ON, AND GET IN THE CAR…WE’RE GOING TO CHURCH!

Praying with and for you, Pastor Julie+

Production of The Messenger takes a great deal of PAPER. Lots of trees give their lives to print this newsletter. In addition, mailing the newsletter is a very time consuming endeavor as well as a relatively expensive one. For the better part of two years, your Church Council has tried to determine the best way to distribute The Messenger to our membership while being good stewards of the earth. The Congregational Council has determined that this issue of The Messenger is

the last issue that will be mailed to our membership. Future issues will be emailed to our membership and will be available on our website. A limited number of paper copies will be available in the narthex. If you receive this newsletter and do not receive email from Luther Memorial, but would like to receive the newsletter electronically, please send an email to: [email protected] and let us know.

School Bag Supplies

Phyllis Swenson would like to remind the congregation that is time again to think about filling school bags for the Lutheran World Relief. These bags are distributed to needy children around the world and are received with much gratitude from both parents and students. This is the list of items that are needed:

70-sheet notebooks of wide or college ruled paper Rulers with centimeters on one side Pencil sharpeners Blunt scissors Pencils (No. 2 with erasers) Ballpoint pens, black or blue ink Crayons (box of 24)

The school bags are being made by the ladies of the Seeker group. Please leave any contributions in the large pink container that will be in the narthex Sunday, August 5 through October 1. Thank you for your generosity! The WELCA Spring Shipping report showed that LMLC was able to contribute 27 School Kits, as well as 26 Quilts, and 19 Baby Kits!

Simple Summer Breakfasts

Our summer breakfasts continue at 9 am on Sunday mornings. We are so happy to welcome some of our neighbors from Operation Lunch Bag to breakfast. Maybe this is what else it means to “break bread together”. Coffee’s on, see you for breakfast!

While bashing and pounding our intern (or anyone else) is never encouraged, you are invited to join us after worship on Sunday, August 5, as we welcome Vicar Inge Williams to Luther Memorial. There will be an awesome BBQ lunch and we’ll enjoy some favorite summertime activities.

To welcome Vicar Inge, we will give her a good old fashioned POUNDING! Now, before you get too upset…here’s what a POUNDING means: Bring a POUND of something for Vicar Inge’s pantry/apartment…a pound of coffee, sugar, flour, cookies, rice, paper towels, spaghetti, cleaning supplies, etc. You get the idea. (Already, Pastor Julie is trying to figure out how much Diet Coke equals a pound.) There will be an ice chest for non-perishable items (a pound of hamburger?)

Let’s give Vicar Inge a BIG LMLC welcome!

BBQ Bash and a Pounding to welcome Vicar Inge!

Will the intern keep a schedule similar to the pastor? Answer: What? There’s a schedule? We all know that a pastor does not work from nine to five. But it is important and expected that there be some semblance of a schedule.

As we begin internship, Vicar Inge will take Friday as her Sabbath day, unlike Pastor Julie, who takes Monday as her Sabbath. Remember that ministry takes your clergy staff to many different places – visitation, meetings, community events, hospitals, nursing homes, etc., in addition to time spent in the office. If you need either Pastor Julie or Vicar Inge, the Office Administrator generally knows how to reach them.

Intern Question of the Month

Vicar’s View (Our new monthly segment from Vicar Inge)

By the time this newsletter hits the print, I will be in Seattle, beginning my year-long internship with you at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church. It’s hard to believe, but I am so excited for the opportunity to participate in life at LMLC, learn from you, share my gifts, and discern together where the Spirit is moving! Thank you for this ministry of preparing an intern (me) for a lifetime of ministry, and to Pastor Julie for acting as my supervisor.

This summer I was given the opportunity to travel to many different Lutheran camps around ELCA’s Region 6 (Ohio, Michigan and Indiana) as an “outdoor ministry ambassador” for Trinity Seminary. I explored with the camp staff about their vocation: where their gifts and passions might overlap with the world’s great needs. It is a discussion that I think never ends, because no matter our age, we have a human need to ask the question, “What is my purpose?” Camp is a place where many people feel the tug to live for something bigger than themselves, because they have experienced God’s presence in Christian community and the creation. Although my call was primarily to the college-aged camp counseling staff, I also spent time with pastors, adult leaders, and campers from ages baby to seventy-five. It was a joy, reminding me of what it means to be called together as ‘church:’ an intergenerational, cross-cultural, socially diverse gathering of people who look to God

for mercy, for guidance, and for the strength to carry out God’s mission to the world.

The last week of my time as outdoor ministry ambassador was spent at Michi-lu-ca, an outdoor ministry site an hour from my family’s home in northern Michigan. I had worked at camp two years prior, the summer before I entered seminary, and it was a growth-filled experience. I first discerned a call to ministry at a retreat at Michi-lu-ca, and throughout that summer it remained a place full of surprises, challenges, triumphs, and overall growth in confidence and sense of vocation. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity this summer also to be reminded that God’s call takes us out of our comfort zone and empowers us to do things we thought we never could do for the sake of the body of Christ. I know that this internship year will be similar, although larger in scope: a time to venture into new territory, a time to continue discerning call, and a time to grow through both the joys and challenges. On July 31 I board the train to Seattle in trust that God’s gracious hand will be there, empowering all of us for God’s work in the world.

In eager anticipation of our

year together, Vicar Inge

The Sunday Church School Students have designated their offerings each Sunday for special projects. For the school years 2010 and 2011 the boys and girls designated the following for the Heifer International Project:

Two shares to purchase a llama Flock of chicks Flock of ducks and geese Trio of rabbits

For the school year 2012 the students designated their offering to be used to start a Community Garden through ELCA Good Gifts. For the ELCA Community Garden’s designated recipient, everyone takes a turn tending the community garden resulting in plenty of fruits and vegetables. The SCS students thought this was a good choice since this is similar to the gardens LMLC sponsors in the Broadview community.
