Do you often bike for transportation, recreation, or both?Just Transportation

What specific destinations would be interesting to people biking in your neighborhood?Miller Creek [Miller Creek]Skyline Drive [Skyline Parkway]

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.Hills! [Hills]I’m happy to go further to avoid having to be sweating after going up steep hills. [Identify Roads to Avoid Hills]Rough roads and debris. [Road Condition] [Grit/Debris on Roads]Car wheels can take more abuse than bike wheels. Road repair (even for cars) needs to be done in a quality manner. Patched areas may be unnoticeable in a car – but it is not on a bike. OUCH! [Repair Roads]Traffic. Most vehicle traffic is okay but it only take one angry person in 3,000 lbs of metal to cause a big and dangerous problem. [Motorists/Traffic]Separate lanes would be a beginning, [Add Bike Lanes or Shoulder Space]but more education (of both bicyclists and motorists) – ie, public announcements, would be helpful. [Public Education for Motorists] [Public Education for Bicyclists]Neither bicyclists nor motorists are trying to annoy the other (I hope) – we are all just wanting to get where we are going without bothering others or being bothered.

Additional comments:I appreciate the efforts to come up with solutions.

Map comments:Rough road [Skyline Parkway]Unsafe for bikes (cars and debris), but no big hills [Efficient Connections Are Unsafe for Bikes][US Highway 53]Steep hills [Piedmont Ave]Too many pot holes [Springvale Rd]Designated “bike path”. Not a good road (narrow and pot holes) and steep hills [Lincoln Park Dr]To UWS via Bong Bridge – Nice ride, but long [Poor Access to Superior] [Bong Bridge]Rough road but no big hills [Maple Grove Rd]

[Change the Auto-Dominant Culture]

Additional comments:Wind direction & traffic determine my routes – also road conditions.I try to find low-traffic, clean routes with nice views. My uphill trek home is primarily determined by a zigzag climbing route that minimizes loss of elevation & steep slopes – it is basically uphill all the way home, so I am less picky about scenery.

Additional comments:I’m car free. I bike for transportation 12 months a year. I have an unbroken streak of 13 months of biking to work without missing a day. I bike 5,000 to 8,000 miles a year on Duluth streets. I have concerns, as a year round commuter, that once we have bike lanes, they may not be kept clear of winter sand & salt. Car drivers may expect me to be on a bike lane that is unrideable because of debris and sand.

[Motorists/Traffic]Location to ride, side of Kenwood going “up” the hill, no room and many potholes.[Roads Without Space for Bikes] [Road Condition] [Kenwood Ave]The DTA travels very close to me on this road. At very minimum stripe Kenwood to make motorists aware of bikers. [Add Bike Lanes or Shoulder Space]Striping/marking in general. 10-11’ min driving lane, many of ours are 12’Paint is cheap (and educational) as far as improvements go

Additional comments:Chester Creek would be a great connector from central Hillside area to Kenwood/UMD area.[Chester Park]People in Duluth commute year-round, and each year this # increases; people want to commute in this city. Let’s help make that safer & more conducive so people who want to can. Thank you.

What specific destinations would be interesting to people biking in your neighborhood?

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.I bike on Arrowhead Road because it is the only street from my house to most destinations. The main issue is the speed of the traffic from Highway 53 (45 mph) to Rice Lake Rd intersection and (30 mph) to Kenwood; however, the speed is usually higher than posted. [Efficient Connections Are Unsafe For Bikes] [Arrowhead Rd]Despite two lanes, many drivers do not respect cyclists and try to use the lane the cyclist is in and pass too closely (much less than the 3-foot rule). [Motorists/Traffic] I believe that sharrows with painted bike symbols on the pavement from Hwy 53 to Kenwood Ave on Arrowhead would communicate to drivers that bicycles belong on the road. [Paint Sharrows]I always wear screaming yellow for visibility.Education of drivers and cyclists would also help make the roads safer. [Public Education for Motorists] [Public Education for Bicyclists]Duluth needs a bike-pedestrian coordinator. We seem to plan each project on a neighborhood by neighborhood basis, using a “popularity contest” approach to bicycle-pedestrian planning. The City should have the input of a bike-pedestrian coordinator so that the safe design of streets for cyclists and pedestrians is uniform throughout the City. The Council should rely on the input of a professional bike-ped coordinator, as they do on the City engineer. [City Should Hire a Bike/Ped Coordinator]

What specific destinations would be interesting to people biking in your neighborhood?Chester Park [Chester Park]Kenwood Shopping Center – shops [Kenwood Shopping Center]Mt Royal shopping Center – library, post office, shops [Mount Royal Area]UMD [UMD]CSS [College of Saint Scholastica]

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.Intersections – Worst facility is channelized turns [Crossing Busy Intersections]Streets – with no shoulder or space for cycling. Worst are the ones with 4 driving lanes and no safety zone e.g. Arrowhead Rd from 53 to Kenwood [Roads Without Space for Bikes] [Arrowhead Rd]

Additional comments:Sharrows (not full bike lanes) would go a long way to accommodate cyclists and “educate” motorists. [Paint Sharrows]Law enforcement needs to start issuing citation to cyclists who break traffic laws (running lights, stop signs, wrong way on 1-way streets) [Enforce Traffic Laws for Bicyclists]City officials and (even more) engineers need to make a mind-shift. Does Duluth want to be bicycle friendly or not? (if not, admit it so we can move) [City Workers Should Consider Bikes]

I end up riding on the sidewalks but they are quite bumping & are in disrepair. [Roads Without Space for Bikes] [Poor Sidewalk Condition]It would be great to have bike lanes, like in Minneapolis. Additional comments:It would be good to have more bikes racks on the bus, maybe ones on the back? [More DTA Bike Racks]It would also be nice if they ever connected the lakewalk all the way to the Munger bike trail – it’s very difficult to get there by bike from East Duluth. [Cross City Trail]

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.We moved to Water St to be able to have flat biking available to us as we age. We are very excited about the expansion of the Lakewalk East and West. [Lakewalk]However, Water St has no bike trail and the street is clogged with rollerbladers, families walking, bikers and cars sharing the road – cars are backing out all the time and this area is very unsafe and needs a bike trail asap. [Roads Without Space for Bikes] [Build Bike Paths, Off-Street or Unspecified] [Water St]If you are looking at changing roads while they are being repainted, please help us figure out how to get a bike trail on Water Street in August when they put the street back together again. Also they should be some rules about how bikes and pedestrians can safely share the Lakewalk – it is very congested now and can be dangerous both for pedestrians and bikes – perhaps rules about staying right – keeping dogs close so they don’t run across the path of bicyclists. Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.- Biggest problem is trigger lights! Traffic lights that don’t change unless a car pulls up to it – particularly 1st St + Mesaba. [When Stoplights Only Trigger for Cars] [Mesaba Ave]Change to a timer system or cross-button for bicyclists at right-hand curb on either side that would trigger the light. [Change Lights to Timer System] [Add Cross Button for Bikes at Intersections]- Poor pavement + potholes, esp on 1st St, Superior St, 4th St, Skyline Parkway [Road Condition][1st Street] [Superior St] [4th Street] [Skyline Parkway]

Additional comments:There are some hill streets I only use one-way, downhill (Mesaba, Woodland south of College St). Some are dangerous, but there are no alternatives – particularly the 2 blocks of Mesaba that Skyline Parkway uses. [Efficient Connections Are Unsafe For Bikes] [Woodland Ave]Others aren’t on my regular routes but I use them sometimes, like Central Entrance, that could be made safer. Central Ent + Mesaba intersection is the worst. [Crossing Busy Intersections] [Central Entrance] A bike path, off-street, should be built/extended from 10th St + 1st Ave E, parallel to Central Entrance + utilizing Palm St., to the mall, and are along Trinity Rd. from the Mall to Piedmont Ave. There could be a bike/ped over or underpass from 11th St over Cent Ent +Rice Lake Rd to East Skyline. Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.Too dangerously competing for space w/ autos. Parking on streets conflicts w/ bike space at present. [Roads Without Space for Bikes]Poor visibility. [Not Being Visible to Motorists]Poor intersections. [Crossing Busy Intersections]Poor pedestrian walkways. Crummy sidewalks for shared biking/walking. [Poor Sidewalk Condition]Lack of bike lanes on downtown thoroughfares. [Downtown]

Additional comments:4th Street not bike friendly, nor Superior – I utilize them frequently on bike but reluctantly. [4th Street][Superior St]8th Avenue, below 4th, makes okay downhill biking except for blind intersections. [8th Ave East]8th Ave above 4th is highly traveled by walkers but has very poor curbs. Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.Running parallel to lake is easy – up the hill is hell. [Hills]Traffic on London Rd is FAST & reckless on roads past 47th. Crossing London Rd. is not safe except at few lights. [Motorists/Traffic] [London Rd]

Additional comments:I would like to have zebra crossings, Crosswalks in Duluth, like in Calif, where cars must stop for pedestrians or get ticketed. [Paint Zebra Crossings]Water St is the last connecting piece for the bike path to Brighton Beach. It is not safe for cars, strollers, bladders, & bikes. We have a perfect opportunity to make a multi use path on Water during the reconstruction after the water holding tanks are completed. I suggest we assess those who live on water & just do it! (this summer) I would be one of those assessed. [Water St]In Santa Cruz, Ca, they subsidized electric bikes. Older folks & people who began to exercise could pedal or use the electric motor. They used the latter to get up hills & cross busy streets (i.e. keep up & traffic flow across shout lights.) We could do that here! There is a definite ageism in Duluth & we could turn that around. What specific destinations would be interesting to people biking in your neighborhood?Mt Royal shopping center (and library) [Mount Royal Area]UMD [UMD]Hartley Nature Center/bike trails [Hartley Park]

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.- Streets are routinely constructed to be dangerous for bikers, and bike routes are not maintained in winter. [Bikes Not Considered in Street Design] [Lack of Snow Plowing]- Designated bike routes in Duluth are dangerous and not bike routes. All they have are signs.[Designated Bike Routes are Dangerous]- Roads that should be well-traveled bike routes (like East 4th St) are dangerous because they have too many cross streets (and cars pull into the bike lane) and too much parking (we will get doored and also a hazard near intersections). [Motorists/Traffic] [Safety Issues With Parked Vehicles] [4th Street]

Additional comments:Oftentimes bike routes should be shorter than car routes, if properly built. A bike route I often use saves up to a mile by using 50 ft. paved cut-through from Lakeview Drive to Apsen lane. Use these, and add some through parks. [Build Bike Paths, Off-Street or Unspecified] [Lakeview Dr]For year-round commuting we need trails, main routes, away from the road. The city will always dump snow on bike routes next to roads.

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.A couple comments from a commuter biker. Biking to Woodland from Downtown is workable, along the boardwalk then up Congdon parkway or similar routes. However, biking north on Woodland thru the Snively Road intersection is very dangerous. The traffic in the right turn lane on Woodland makes little attempt to slow down, when there is a bike on the sidewalk wanting to cross that intersection, or in the street wanting to cross heading north at that intersection. Can you fix this? [Crossing Busy Intersections] [Woodland Ave]

Additional comments:Have you considered repaving Congdon Parkway as a bikers route? It is really broken down, but is a decent route up the hill to Woodland. [Congdon Trail] It appears 7 bridges road is being upgraded, great, it is another nice bike path.

What specific destinations would be interesting to people biking in your neighborhood? All of Park Point, trail at the end [Park Point]Beaches [Park Point Beaches]Rec Center [Community Recreation Centers]Community Garden [Community Gardens]

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.Lake/Minnesota Avenue on park Point are State Aid roads; therefore there is no designated bike lane because a lane must be physically separated from traffic on a State Aid road, and the lane is just a parking lane with no barrier. However, it appears as if there is a bike lane because traffic is parking on the bay side all summer. So going both ways in the lake side lane are bikes, roller bladders, joggers, joggers with prams, skate boarders, walkers with dogs, Segways and tandem bikes when they’re rentable in Canal Park… It is, to put it mildly, insane. One solution would be to have parking on both sides all summer.Another would be for there to be signage: “Cyclists travel with traffic; no bike lane on Park Point.”[Minnesota Ave]

Describe the main problems you have with bicycling and possible solutions to them.MnDOT provided a temporary paved path for public use between 23rd Avenue East and London Road east of 26th Avenue East until the shoreline route would be possible. That temporary path does not meet federal standards and is not officially designated as "Lakewalk". The problems are a steep grade and two overly sharp turns and for west-bound users an abrupt confrontation with motorized vehicles at the intersection of 23rd and Water Street. [Water St]
