What is an active shooter?

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, an Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.



Active shooter/active killer situations on a bus or in the classroom can be over in just minutes.

ARE YOU PREPARED?

Active shooter/active killer situations are fast and fluid, often over within

15 to 30 minutes



The workplace is a significant epicenter for violence.The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health revealed that homicide, was the number one causeof death for women in the workplace.



Violence Does Not Happen Randomly



Over a period of time can predict violence, and can help us recognize potential problems: Sadness, depression, threats Aggressive outbursts References to weaponry Verbal abuse Inability to handle criticism Hypersensitivity References to violence or death



Routine loss of temper

Abusive language or physical threats

Vandalism/property damage

Use of drugs or alcohol

Increase risk behavior



Detailed plans to commit an act of violence

Enjoys hurting others

Carrying/fascination with weapon

A new violent or aggressive behavior



Feelings of anger

Feelings of rejection

Gang membership

Failing to acknowledge the feelings of others****



When observed in clusters and coupled with diminished school performance maysuggest a heightened potential for violence
