An enthusiastic Anglesey teenager has clocked up nearly 40 hours of volunteering in just a few weeks after connecting with a new Volunteer Anglesey Sport website. Lauren Richardson, 16, a pupil at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern is interested in a career in the sports industry and signed up to the website, to see how she could gain experience through volunteering. Over the Summer holidays, she has assisted at a number of Summer Play Schemes, a Multisport Day and football course for children at Llangefni. She also marshalled at a Family Run for the inaugural Tour de Mon Cycling Sportive. This month, she will be assisting with coaching support for Amlwch Lions FC, pan-disability football team. She said: “I registered my details on www.volunteerangleseysport.com because I wanted to get involved with sport on Anglesey and help out to gain experience. I’m interested in becoming a Young Ambassador next term and to go into coaching. The website is easy to use and I get notifications for new volunteering vacancies that I can sign up to if I want to. I’m looking forward to doing more during this new school term.”

Sports Volunteer Co-ordinator, Rachel Argyle said: “The Volunteer Anglesey Sport website is a new way to link up sport clubs/events with potential volunteers like Lauren. It’s free and simple to use and you can keep in the loop with sport on the island and sign up to anything of interest to you. We have had volunteers ranging from 16 to 60 register their details and many clubs offering opportunities and hope to get many more on board.”

For volunteering support or more information about the website, contact Rachel on [email protected] or call (01248) 752026. To register as a volunteer or provider on the website, visit www.volunteerangleseysport.com.

The Canoe Club in Amlwch are reflecting after a very busy Summer. Chair of the Club Phil Edwards explained: “A few from the club joined the Amlwch Gala Committee, which was reinvented after an absence of several years and were involved in giving people free Try It Sessions in the harbour using three Open (Canadian) canoes and a couple of kayaks. 39 children and 6 adults gave it a go on a lovely, hot day and a few came back for seconds! In an effort to better their own skills and qualifications and further the Club, four members attended 3 Star Sea Kayak Training and Assessment over two days. This involved their paddling skills put under the microscope, and culminating in an assessment which included deep water rescues, with all four passing! Being members of the Outdoor Partnership, we can apply for funding to attend these courses. Their aim, like ours, is to get as many people involved in the outdoors and sport as possible. If anyone fancies a go at canoeing, the club offers three taster sessions at £5 per session. This includes equipment but participants will have to provide their own clothing to canoe in with the expectation of getting wet (bring spare clothes).

A Family Fun Day helped launch a new club aimed at families of people with a disability and their families. Cylch Teulu/Family Circle will start in September, but the Fun Day at Amlwch Leisure

Centre provided information about the social inclusion club and a taster of the various activities that will be on offer at the twice monthly sessions. People of all ages enjoyed a variety of stalls and refreshments, arts & crafts, face painting, a bouncy castle and more. Isle of Anglesey Council Sports Development Unit led the sport sessions provided by Disability Sport Wales Officer, Karen Williams and Age Friendly Communities Officer, John Pritchard and play sessions were delivered by Dewis Chwarae’s Meirion Owen. A number of volunteers helped with the smooth-running of the day. To learn more about the club, email [email protected] or to register as a volunteer, sign up at www.volunteerangleseysport.com.
