When I reported to the command In August of 1994 my sister-In-law Barbaru A)117 had been undergoing chemotherapy and bad undergone a few operashytions I felt so sorry for her beshycause of what sbe was going tbrougb I asked God what I muld do for berbull

Shonly thereafter the anmiddot swer came to him After seeing a program featuring Individuals who dedicated Iheir lives to othshyers saicken with cancer the first class petty officer decided he wanted to do something similar

Since NMCB S wns so much Into physical mlnlng I decided to get Involved with running To me It was Inspirational It struck me as tbc answer to what I could do not so much to help her but (symbollcally) to let some of the pain fall on my shoulders Whenshyever I get winded or feel hurt I think of her and all the pain shes going through and I can run through It

Cordero started training ror half-marathons late lo 1994

As I was running I kept thlnklng or her and au she was going through When I Onlsbed my lint race there was a sense or accompllshment Cordero said

Cordero has set a goal co run 500 miles during this current deshyployment

to all kinds of monitors Now I Just pray that she can rccelve some of the strength and good health I bavt bull

Ayvlzs health started to reshybound since her last operation and one of her large rumors has shrunken She hu been llble to return to her home and ber Job In Round Lake Ill but sdll must endure the chemotherapy S6middot slons for three days every a month

After the Batlllllon arrived In Okinawa for their seven-month deployment Bravo Company conmiddot ducted a controlled Inspection of Cllmp Shields radlltles and dctershymlned whiit repairs and Improveshyments were needed

During the controlled Inmiddot spectlon a need wns ldcntlncd for new home furnishings throughmiddot out the barracks and a number or jobs aimed directly at Improving the qunJtyor-ure for future batmiddot tallon deployments

The builders led by Builder ThJ rd Cl ass K ugh Call ilhan reshypaJnccd rooms and repilred ceshyramic tiles In shower stalls In both orncer and enlisted barraclcs They also repaired the sidewalks around the enlisted bamtcks and In front of the galley after a tyshyphoon left a huge sinkhole In Its wake Addltlonally they helped rehab the dental offices and reshyplaced drop celling throughout the enlisted buracks

Under the direction of UtlllUcsman First Oass Raymond Mathewson the shops utllltlesmen continually worked on galley upkeep maintaining and servicing more than 300 reshyfrigerators as well as perfonnlng plumbing )obs and repairing shower units

Repairing what was already there ts only part of the story Construction llcctrldan Second Class Kai Ngo directed the Bravo Company clectrldans as they In-

stalled a Local Area Network (LAN) S)5tem which connee100 all or the computers lhroughout the camp enabling users easier a~ to lnformuJon and a IJmlted numshyber or prtncers

Our constructlon electrlshydans worked on the lAN system They Installed l 500 meters of flmiddot bcr optic cable and conduit Inmiddot stalled 78 office outlets and six computer hub stations said Builder First Class Davld McDonald Bravo Company Mainshytenance Control Director The system will modemlze how au the companies communicate with each other as weU as outside sources With aU the work weve done Bravo Company has made a lasting contrlbuUon to Camp Shields

Although Scabecs havent recently been assigned such tasking missions of thls type arent entirely new co them Until the late 1980s SeabCCS were trained and occasionally tasked with conscrucUng a similar type ofbrldgmiddot Ing system - lhe Blllley Bridge

However because the othtt military forces which nonnally ulill2C such bridges were conmiddot sldcrcd to be spcdallsLS with theJr own type of bridging systems Scabces shifted lhelr focus to other types or training
