ASTORY IS TOLD OF A FARMER

who owned an old, decrepitmule. One day the farmer

heard the mule braying pitifullyand found that it had fallen intoan old dried up well. The farmersympathized with the poor mule,but after assessing the situationhe decided that neither the mulenor the well was worth saving.

Instead, he called his hired handsand neighbors together, told them

what had happened, and enlistedtheir help to haul dirt and bury theold mule in the well, thus puttinghim out of his misery.

At first the old mule washysterical. But as the farmer andthe others continued dumpingdirt on his back, a thought struck

him. Every time a shovelful ofdirt landed on his back, hecould shake it off and stepup. This he did, blow afterblow.

Shake it off and stepup. Shake it off andstep up. Shake it offand step up!No matterhow close together or painfulthe blows or how distressing the

be! But Jesus doesnt want you to stay in tstate. He wants to move you beyond that poand He will. When youve come to the end of yown resources, thats when Jesus can step in ado the impossible for you. If you can believethings are possible (Mark 9:23). Hold Him to tpromise. Put Him to the test!

This is why the Devil and his band constaappeal to your carnal reasoning. They attack yfaith by planting doubts and offering seeminsound reasons and logical excuses why it sposedly cant be done. Theyre quick and crand hit hard, so you must be equally militanrejecting their doubts. Call their bluff! Defy theHit them back with the Word of God, like JedidIt is written! (Matthew 4:111).

Here is how to guard yourself against the impossible lie:

1 Feed your faith. Faith comes from read

and absorbing Gods Word (Romans 10:17). If ydont consistently feed your faith, youll soonoverwhelmed by the Devils doubts, because

attacks the hardest when he sees youve let doyour guard. Take time to read the written Woand also to bring your questions and problemJesus and ask Him to speak His answers direto your heart or mind.

2 Stay focused on Jesus and His promisIgnore circumstances or other voices that oppwhat He tells you to do. When Jesus called Peto step out of the boat and walk on the water wHim, Peter did fine until he took his eyes ofJesus, looked down at the waves, and beca

fearfulthen he lost faith and started to s(Matthew 14:2232).

3 Put your faith to use every day. The more yexercise your faith, the more miracles you will and the more your faith will grow.

Dont fall into the Devils impossible trJesus cannot lie. He cannot fail. He cannot stopped, and there will be no stopping you if yavail yourself of His power and help.

just an ingrained natural retion. When someone has a ctain weakness and gives in torepeatedly, very often the prolem has its roots in the spiriturealm, where God and His angeforces on one hand and the Deand his evil spirits on the othtry to influence our thoughand actions. For we wrestle n

against flesh and blood, tBible tells us, but against prinpalities, against powers, againthe rulers of the darkness of t

So to overcome a vice, you have to get free ofwhatever evil spirit may be behind it. Accordingto Gods Word, there are evil spiritsdemons, asthey are commonly referred tothat specializein playing up certain sins and vices to our harm,

such as demons of alcoholism, drug addiction,smoking, gambling, gluttony, and eating disor-ders such as anorexia and bulimia, etc. Theseare some of the most obvious vices, but there areothers: hatred, bitterness, pride, jealousy, self-righteousness, anger, negativity, criticalness,and lying and deception, to name a few. Thespiritual powers that bind people to these othervices can be just as strong and destructive as theones that drive people to compulsive gambling

or drug or alcohol addiction.There are demons that will try to causedamage in almost any area of your life if you letthem. This is especially true if you already have anatural weakness along a certain line, like a ten-dency to be jealous or critical of others, for exam-ple. The enemies of your soulthe Devil and hisdemonswill play on that weakness and tempt

you with it every chance you give them.This is why Gods Word says to not give any

place to the Devil (Ephesians 4:27). When you

give place to evil spirits, its like having aboarder in your house who is bent on annoy-ing you and causing you trouble and all kinds ofdamage. You may tell him to leave several times,but if he refuses, finally by the authority of thelawin this case the authority of Gods Word andthe name of Jesusyou throw the rotter out!

But before you can get rid of him, you have torecognize that he is therethat there is an actualspiritual force binding you to that viceand youhave to want to be free of that vice badly enough

that you are willing toconfess your problem toJesus, pray for deliverance,and take a stand againstfuture temptation.

The moment you prayand ask Jesus to deliver

you, you willbe delivered. You have Jesus prom-

ise on that: All authority has been given to [Jesus] in Heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:Whatever you ask in My name, that I will (John 14:13). If the Son [Jesus] makes you fr

you shall be free indeed (John 8:36).

When you pray, remind the Lord of these aother promises He has made in His Word. Tshows you have faith in His ability to fulfill promises. Never doubt for a moment that Lord is going to answer, and He will. He hasbecause He has promised to.

Some changes are instantaneous, but othtake a while. Even after prayer and spiritdeliverance, it often takes time to complebreak free from the habit. The Devil and

forces dont just give up and go away. They try to retake the ground they have lost. But yhave the advantage now. Before deliverance, pestering spirit may have had quite a bit of ctrol, but after deliverance it is within your powto resist its regaining control. This must becothe new focus of your prayers. You must also tpractical steps to fight falling prey to it again.

Some vices have such a strong grip on thvictims that theyre almost impossible to ovcome without spiritual reinforcements in

form of others prayers and encouragement. Iafter praying for deliverance, strong tempta-tion threatens to rob you of the victory over

your vice or addiction, you may need toconfess your problem to others who arestrong in faith and ask them to pray with

you against it, as well as to help providesupport and safeguards to help you notgive in to temptation. Admit your faults

flying over your head, but you can keep them frobuilding a nest in your hair. The Devil cant wunless you surrender! Hit him back every timetries his tactics on you! Resist the Devil and

will flee from you (James 4:7).One of your best defenses against temptatio

besides continuing to call on Jesus for help aclaiming His promises, is to keep busy for Gand otherswork therapy that keeps you so bu

with positive activities that you dont have tito think about returning to your vice.Support groups can also be a big helphavi

others to turn to who understand your situatiand have perhaps been through the same or siilar problems. Two are better than one fothey fall, one will lift up his companion. Thouone may be overpowered by another, two c

wil l probably continue to be tempted in that areafor a while, especially if it has been a big prob-

lem for years. But dont give up! Resist the verythoughtof temptation! Its not your fault that youget tempted. Nobody can keep temptation fromcoming, but you dont have toyieldto temptation.Its like the saying, You cant keep birds from

When I opened my eyes, he looked like a dif-

ferent man!Before we parted, he said, Thank you for

bringing me this peaceand by the way, myname is George.

Two weeks later, back at the market, I didnteven recognize him! He was clean-shaven and

well groomed. He was also eager to pray with meand the other members of The Family that I was

with, and happy to receive the Conctate(Span-ish edition of Activated) magazine and smallstack of other Family literature we offered him.

The following week he told us that he had readthe literature over and over. He had also sat andtalked to Jesus for a couple of hours, and hadconcluded by telling Him he needed to find work.Because of his violent and argumentative behav-ior, George had been fired from job after job.

And can you believe it, he said, one minutelater a boy walked up to me and said his father

was offering me a job at his stallthe same man who swore one month ago that I would never

work for him again! George was so excited athow quickly the Lord had answered his prayer!On that visit, he asked us to pray with him

three times about various mattersonce for theLord to help him stop drinking completely. Jesushad been speaking to him about that.

The strangest thing happened to me the otherday, he said. I was drinking with my buddies

when all of a sudden I felt Jesus nudge me on theshoulder and tell me to put down my wineandI did! I just got up and walked away. I neverwould

have done that before! Then, about 20 minuteslater, the men Id been drinking with started abig fight, and a policeman came to break it up.This policeman knew he could always find me inthe middle of a good fight, so when he saw mesitting nearby, not in the melee, he asked, Dont

you belong in there? When I told him no, he just stared at me and asked, Whats happenedto you? Jesus is changing me. I can feel it, and

others can see it. Now I wantto pray that I can stop drinkingcompletely.

When George said he didntthink he could survive anothercold, damp winter on the street,I offered to pray for him to finda place to stay at a rent he couldafford. He wasnt so sure.

Didnt Jesus get you a job when you thought that wasimpossible? And isnt He help-ing you overcome your alcohol-ism? Is it any more to ask of Himto give you a place to stay? Nowthat you belong to the Lord and

your heart is on His side, Jesuswill never fail to care for you, Iassured him.

He looked at me with hopefuleyes. Then it clicked. Wow! Ofcourse! he nearly shouted.

The last time I saw George, hetold me that a large citrus com-

pany had offered him a super-visory job, complete with livingquarters.

Better news still, he said hefelt he could once more face his

wife and grown twin daughters.With all the miracles Jesus hasdone for me, Im sure He canhelp me make amends andtouch their hearts to take meback. All this is proof that He is

with me. Now, no matter whatthe problem, I feel that Jesus issaying, Trust Me!

ALCOHOL AFFECTS DIFFERENT PEOPLE

IN DIFFERENTWAYS. It makes somepeople happy, uninhibited, orrelaxed, but it makes others irri-table, nervous, angry, solemn,depressed, or withdrawn.

When drunk in moderation, winehas a number of benefits. It cangive a light, joyful feeling andbrighten the countenance. It even

has medicinal qualities that canrelieve indigestion and bring restand relaxation. But when drunk inexcess, it can be a destructive toolof the Devil to adversely influenceones spirit, thoughts, and actions,and alter the personalityand itcan become an addiction.

Those who depend on alcohol orany other substance for happiness

and peace of mind are being deceived. The peand happiness that alcohol gives are temporand shallow, because no physical agentbalcohol, drugs, or anything elsecan satisfy needs of the spirit. Only I can truly meet thneeds. In Me, those who are receptive to the trfind genuine, lasting happiness and peace.

You may feel happy and relaxed after onetwo drinks or one or two pills, but if you fi

This is not to say that if you make one wrodecision youre doomed. Everyone makes sowrong decisions. Its what you do about it whyou find that you have made a wrong choice tdetermines which way you will go from thereyou arent willing to face the facts, most likely y

will continue to make the same mistake. But if yrecognize the error of your way, turn to Me help, and learn from your mistake, youll come the better for it.
