Christmas has a way of bringing out the best inpeople. Its one time of the year when we look upwain search of peace and hope, inward for the resourceto love and give freely, and outward in reconciliationAt Christmastime, most of the world shares a brief bublessed moment of peace.

But what about this year? With numerous armed

conflicts around the world, peace agreements beingbroken almost before they are brokered, and thegrowing specter of international terrorism, is there areason to believe that peace will ever come?

When we look at the world situation, theres verylittle reason to hope. But when we look to the PrincePeace, Jesus, theres every reason to hopeand everyreason to pass that hope on to others.

What can you do to help bring peace on earth?Youre just one person, after all, and have very littleinfluenceor do you? You may not command an arm

or sit at the negotiating table where peace treatiesand disarmament plans are forged, but you can chansituations through your prayers and you can influenceveryone you come in contact with through your atttude and actions. A song that was popular some yearago put it like this: If everyone lit just one little candwhat a bright world this would be! You may not belight to the whole world, but you can light your partthe world. We all can.

From all of us at Activated, may God bless you anyours with His perfect peace, and may He make you ablessing to others this Christmas season and always.

It was pa st 10:00 P.M. on Christ-

mas Eve , and holiday lights bright-ened the roads of Bangkok.

My son Joey and I had just col-lected three large bags of bread andpastries from the bakery of a five-starhotel that often donates their leftoversto our family of Christian volunteers.

Apparently the hotel bakery hadoverestimated its Christmas business, because this was considerably morethan they usually had for us.

As we walked the last few blockshome, I prayed out loud, Lord, whatare we going to do with all this bread? Its way too much for our family offour!

It didnt take the almighty God alifetime to answer. An instant later, it

was right in front of us. Sitting on theside of the road was a young beggar ina shabby dress. Next to her, a youngchild lay on a dirty but neatly spreadblanket.

Joey reached into one of thebags, and the smell of freshly bakedbread poured out. He handed her alarge loaf, and she bowed deeply inthe beautiful Thai tradition. When

she lifted her face, she was smilingthrough tears.

Another loaf, an inner voice whipered. Give her another loaf!

The second loaf was met with asmile even more radiant than the firBy now, joy had erased every trace odespair. The young woman lookedtruly beautiful, despite her rags.

With warm Christmas and NewYear greetings, Joey and I said goodbye and set off in search of morelonely and destitute folks to share obread with. As in almost any majorcity, there are always plenty of poorpeople on the streets of Bangkok, evat that time of the night. For the nexhour or so, offering Christmas greetings and bread in exchange for smil

became a happy little ritual. With our bags almost empty but

our hearts overflowing, we headedhome. It had been a different sortof Christmas Eve for us, with a littlemore meaning than we had expecteGiving even in this small way hadhelped us remember what Christmais all abouta gift from our heavenFathers heart to ours, Jesus.

Event after event has left the

world questioning, Why all thepain and strife? Why the slaughterof the innocents? Why troublesand sorrows? It is getting darkerand colder all the time. The sun issetting, the darkness is falling, andthe world is looking for some ray ofhope.

That hope is here. Two thousand years ago, over

the town of Bethlehem, a new starshone and an angel of God pro-

claimed to a group of shepherds,Behold, I bring you good tidings ofgreat joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day inthe city of David a Savior, who isChrist the Lord (Luke 2:1011).

On that special night, God gaveus the greatest gift anyone couldgiveHis Son, Jesus. Though Jesuscame into the world as a tiny baby,He brought with Him all of Gods

Peace looked down and beheld War.

Thither will I go, said Peace.

    A PRAYER

    FOR CHRISTMAS

    MORNINGBy Henry Van Dyke1

The day of joy returns, Father in Heaven, and crowns another year with peace and good

    will.

Help us rightly to remember the birth of

Jesus, that we may share in the song of the

angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and the

    worship of the wise men.

Close the doors of hate and open the doors

of love all over the world.

Let kindness come with every gift and good

desires with every greeting.Deliver us from evil, by the blessing that

Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with

    clean hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us happy

to be Thy children, and the Christmas evening

bring us to our bed with grateful thoughts, for-

giving and forgiven, for Jesus sake. Amen. 1FromA Treasury of Christmas Stories

IN A CLASS BY HIMSELF!Jesus Christ has done more to change history, the course of civilization,

and the condition of man than any other leader, group, government, or empire

before Him or since! He has given the love of God to billions and made the way for

as many as will believe in Him to receive eternal life!

Jesus Christ is not merely a philosopher or teacher or rabbi or guru or prophet,

though He has been called all these things. He is the Son of God! God the Father is

a Spirit and is all-powerful, all-knowing, everywhere, and in everything. He is so far

beyond our limited human comprehension that He had to send His Son, Jesus, in

the form of a man, to show us what He Himself is like and to bring us to Himself.

And although many great teachers have spoken about love and God, Jesus is

love and He is God. Jesus is the only One who died for the sins of the world and rose

from the dead. Hes in a class all by Himself because Hes the only Savior. He said, I

am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me

    Retold by Keith Phil

There was once a ma n who

didnt believe in God, and he didnthesitate to let others know how hefelt about religion and religiousholidays, like Christmas. His wife, however, did believe, and sheraised their children to also have

faith in God and Jesus, despite hisdisparaging comments.

One snowy Christmas Eve, hiswife was taking their children toa Christmas Eve church service inthe farm community in which theylived. She asked him to come, buthe refused.

That story is nonsense! hesaid. Why would God lower Him-

self to come to Earth as a man?Thats ridiculous!

So his wife and children left, and he stayed home.

A while later, the winds grewstronger and the snow turned into ablizzard. As the man looked out the

window, all he saw was a blindingsnowstorm. He sat down to relax infront of the blaze in the fireplace.

A short while later, he heard aloud thump. Something had hit t

window. Then another thump. Hlooked out, but couldnt see morethan a few feet. When the storm up a little, he ventured outside tosee what could have been beatin

on his window. In the field near hhouse he saw a flock of wild gees

Apparently they had been flyingsouth for the winter when theygot caught in the snowstorm andcouldnt go on. They were lost anstranded on his farm, with no foor shelter. They just flapped their

wings and flew around the field ilow circles, blindly and aimlessly

A couple of them had flown into window, it seemed. The man felt sorry for the gee

and wanted to help them. The bawould be a great place for themto stay, he thought. Its warm andsafe. They could spend the nightthere, and wait out the storm. So h

walked over to the barn and openthe doors wide, then watched an

waited, hoping they would noticethe open barn and go inside. Butthe geese just fluttered around aim-lessly and didnt seem to notice thebarn or realize what it could meanfor them. The man tried to get theirattention, but that just scared them

further away.He went into the house and

came out with some bread, brokeit up, and made a breadcrumb trailleading to the barn. They still didntcatch on.

Now he was getting frustrated. He got behind them and tried toshoo them toward the barn, butthey only got more scared and

scattered in every direction excepttoward the barn. Nothing he didcould get them to go into the barn

where they would be warm andsafe.

Why dont they follow me?!he exclaimed. Cant they see thisis the only place where they cansurvive the storm?

He thought for a moment and

realized that they just wouldntfollow a human. If only I were agoose, then I could save them, hesaid out loud.

Then he had an idea. He wentinto the barn, got one of his owngeese, and carried it in his arms ashe circled around behind the flockof wild geese. When he released it,his goose flew through the flock

and straight into the barn. One byone, the wild geese followed it tosafety.

The man stood still and silent asthe words he had spoken a few min-utes earlier replayed in his mind:If only I were a goose, then I couldsave them! Then he thought about

what he had said to his wife earlier. Why would God want to be like

WHAT GOD DIDCan you remember a time when you

were a child and you wanted something

so badly that it seemed that special some-thing would never come? And then whenit finally did come, it wasnt what you hadexpected at all, but something far better?Thats what our heavenly Father did withChristmas.

Since the beginning of time, peoplehad longed for a special something to maketheir lives truly happy and complete. Who

would have ever thought that all of that

would come in the form of a tiny baby bornin a barn in some faraway land? But thatsexactly what happened.

God looked at every human heart He hadcreated and every heart to come, and Heknew just what they needed. So He took apart of His own heart and fashioned the per-fect answer. Then He sent the answer intothe world. And He called the answer Jesus.

us? Thats ridiculous! Suddenly itall made sense. That is what Godhad done. We were like the wildgeeseblind, lost, confused, dying. So God had His Son become like us,so He could show us the way andsave us. Thatwas the meaning of

Christmas, he realized. As the winds and blinding

snow died down, his soul becamequiet and pondered this wonderfulthought. Suddenly he understood

what Christmas was all about, why Christ had come. Years ofdoubt and disbelief vanished likethe passing storm. He fell to hisknees in the snow and prayed his

first prayer: Thank You, God, forcoming in human form to get meout of the storm!

Christians, as an expression of their hap-

On Christmas morning one of the

natives brought the teacher a beauti-

ful, lustrous seashell. When the teacher

asked the boy where he had discovered

such an extraordinary shell, the boy said

he had walked many miles to a certain

bay, the only spot where such shells

    could be found.

I think it was wonderful of you to

travel so far to get this lovely gift for me,

    the teacher said.

Every year, shortly before Christma s, I go to thesame office to take care of some personal paper-

work. My visit there is usually made easy by the helpof Judy, one of the office staff. I always consideredJudy a godsend.

Last year, after several minutes of introductorychat, Judy burst into tears. Her husbands cancerhad returnedhe had already had one tumorremoved from his liverand the doctors said hedidnt have long to live. Thomas is only 42, said atearful Judy, and our two sons are so young! Judy

was beside herself with concern for Thomas andworry over their future.

I prayed with her for her own peace of mindand for God to heal Thomas, if it was Gods will.

Judy smiled and thanked me for having takenthe time to talk and pray with her.

When I phoned Judy the next day, she told meThomas was scheduled for a thorough checkupa few weeks later, at which time they would havea better idea how much longer he had to live. Wearranged to talk some more when I returned to heroffice to finish my paperwork before the New Year.

Several weeks later, Christmas had come andgone but strains of O Come All Ye Faithful were

still running through my mind as I got togethersome things for Judy and Thomas to readsomeleaflets and a booklet of comforting thoughts andpromises for the dying and bereaved, Glimpses ofHeaven. They were going to need lots of encourage-ment and strength from Gods Word, I figured.

When I arrived at the office, Judy was not at herdesk. I supposed she was with her husband. Surelyshe was more needed at his side than in the office

at this time. Then suddenly Judy entered th

room, and when she saw me, she up like a light bulb! She explainedthat at Thomass last checkup, the

same doctors who had shown himclear image of the cancerous tumon the ultrasound screen before wprayed for his healing couldnt finany trace of it now. It had com-pletely disappeared, and the doc-tors were baffled.

Judy and Thomas were ecstatiThey had wanted to phone meto share the wonderful news,

but hadnt been able to find mynumber. Judy and I rejoicedtogether, right there in the office.

As I looked down at theGlimpses of Heaven booklet still inmy hand, I realized how little faithad had that God would answer oprayers. I felt a little embarrassedabout that, but very happy that Ghad given both Judy and Thomas

most wonderful Christmas giftthe gift of life.

Thomas imports baked goodsand had given his wife a bag of bicuits (cookies) especially for me, a little thank-you gift for praying him. Then it was my turn to cry.

    to be quiet and listen.

He sat down on the stage and the

    children crowded around him, each

anxious to be the first to receive a gif

    from the glittering red bag.

We must never forget why we ce

must never forget the real reason. Itsjust about parties with yummy food a

    are we celebrating on Christmas?

All the children tried to outdo eac

    birthday!

    Yes, answered Santa Claus, and

you must always remember to pray a

    I smiled and nodded.

The program was perfect. The rea

Panajot was one of the most prom-

ising young artists in Bulgaria. Thenhe was accused and convicted ofkilling his best frienda charge hestrongly deniedand sentenced

to 26 years in prison. He becamedepressed and belligerent with theprison guards, who then refusedto let him have his canvases andpaints. Some time later, a fellowinmate gave him a piece of Familyliterature, and Panajot began corre-sponding with us.

When we moved to Bulgaria lastyear, we felt Jesus wanted us to visit

Panajot in prison. This presentedquite a challenge, since he is in ahigh-security prison where visitsare restricted, especially visits byanyone other than members of theprisoners families. We finally man-aged to meet with Panajot for 15minutes in a visiting room, where

we were separated by wire mesh.He was so thankful that we had

come, as he almost never gets visits. He thanked us profusely for all thereading material we had sent him, especially theActivatedmagazine.

Last Christmas he painted aChristmas card for us with this mes-sage (translated from Bulgarian):

Dear Family,I want you to know that your

ministry of reaching the lost, yourbeautiful music tapes, and theliterature you send me are helpingto heal my soul. The process of get-ting over my anguish and despairis slow, but what you have alreadydone for me has been a great help.Until you came along, no one hadbeen able to so much as scratch the

surface. Bars and prison walls bindme, but through your literature Iam free in spirit. If the Son makes

you free, you shall be free indeed(John 8:36).

Thank you for all you have donefor me. I see my family in all of you,

and I am happy to have such lovingand caring brothers and sisters. I cryas I write this, but these are tears of

joy and thankfulness to have foundpeople who care enough for me to

    write and visit.Panajot

SINGINGIN THE TRAINJack sat in the cold train carriage

and pulled his hat down over his ears.

He and his fellow passengers had been

stranded there for several hours already. The steam locomotive and the lead car-

riage of the overnight express train had

jumped the tracks halfway between Hell

and nowhere. Now all they could do was

wait until help arrived. It was 1959, the

middle of winter, and the dead of night.

No power, no heat, and no light except

for a few flashlights that the conductor

    By Scott McGreg

    and some passengers had.

Jack knew it was going to take

awhile before somewhere up the line

someone realized that the express wasnot on schedule and raised the alarm.

Search parties would have to be mobi-

lized and sent out with some caution. A

train could be sent up the single spur line

in the other direction, but that would

have to be done with great caution as

    they could find themselves traveling

head-on into the delayed express travel-

ing from the other direction. The signal

system on this part of the track was anti-

quated, as Jack, a train aficionado, knew.

The real search, he concluded, would not

    begin until dawn.

He and the other passengers had

scrambled off the train once it had come

to its jerking halt. The steam locomo-

tive and the lead carriage were off thetrack and had plowed into a thick gravel

    embankment, but both were upright.

Miraculously no one was killed, although

the engineer and fireman had sustained

    nasty head injuries.

They had been carried back to one

of the carriages to endure the freezing

night with their passengers, several of

whom had also been hurt. It was frustrat-

ing and scary to know that they were

out there with little chance of rescue till

    daylight.

Then from somewhere in Jacks car-

riage someone started singing. It was the

old World War II Vera Lynn song, The

White Cliffs of Dover. Soon everyone in

the carriage joined in. When that one was

    over, someone started another.

We sang all night, recalled Jacksome years later. We didnt care what the

song was. We sang popular songs, old

music hall numbers, hymns, even Christ-

mas carols. As long as we kept singing, it

kept our spirits up. People from other car-

riages came up and we all, as much as we

could, crowded in together to keep warm.

Most of us were strangers to each other

but we all became comrades in disaster,

lifting each others spirits. They were a mixed bunch, from

young army recruits returning to camp

from leave, young families, a few old-

timers, even some guys I wouldnt nor-

mally want to be around on a dark night.

But somehow the social barriers all came

down. I heard one enormous fellow, Clif-

ford I learned his name was, let off such a

stream of cursing when the accident fi

occurred that it probably equaled all th

other swearing and blasphemy that I h

heard in my life. But he was the fellow

that scooped up the engineer in his arm

carried him back to the carriage, and

hovered over him like a cross between

an angel and a nurse for the rest of the

night. If Ive met anyone in my life thatwas a rough diamond it was him.

I had been used to judging books

by their covers, but I have to admit tha

this fellows case I was wrong and prob

ably have been many other times. The

nothing like the worst of happenings t

bring out the best in people.

It was the most incredible night o

my life in many ways, and I made fast

friends with many that were there. I wa

almost sorry when the rescue teams

located us early the next morning.

    On that miserable night, stranded

in the middle of nowhere, Jack and his

    fellow passengers forged lifelong frien

ships. They decided to have a reunion

every year on the date of the accident.

Jack went to their weddings and some

their funerals. Clifford became an ordeat a hospital and then joined the Saint

John Ambulance Brigade. Seems he ha

only been out of jail a few weeks befor

the wreck and was traveling that night

settle a few scores with some erstwhile

friends. That wreck stopped me from

making a wreck out of my life, he told

Jack at one of their reunions several ye

    later.

Jack got on with his lifebeing mdad amongst other things. It wasnt th

most outstanding of lives, some might

say, but he gained an outstanding less

that night that never left him and one

he was fond of telling me. Our darkest

experiences can sometimes turn out to

be some of our best, and can forge the

    greatest friendships.

    It wa s

    the most

    incredible

    night o f my

    life in ma ny

    wa ys, and

    I ma de fast

    friend s with

    many that

    were there.

    The

Christmas treeBy Amanda WhiteA Christmas tree! What a beautiful sight! But what does

it mean to me?I wondered as I gazed at the Yuletide display

    before me.

The evergreen treeit symbolizes Jesus, who lives in my

heart for good. He never dies away in the winter of my difficul-

ties, but is always with me.

The star on the tiptop of the tree is like that unforgettable

star that lit the way to the first humble home of my Savior two

thousand years ago. It also reminds me to always look up,

that theres always a shining star of hope, even in my darkest

    nights.

The baubles and pretty decorations are the good, happy

things that fill my life with spice and delight. I dont take time

as often as I should to thank God for all my blessings, or evenfor the sad things and the hard times that have made me the

person that I am today. Life wouldnt be life without both joy

and sadness, the good and the bad.

The colorful string of lights reminds me of the things God

does to light my way through life. His Word is a lamp to my

feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105). I never need feel

    alone.

And last but not least, the presents under the Christmas

tree symbolize my gifts to Jesus. It is His birthday, after all. The

most meaningful gifts are gifts of lovetime, friendship, com-

pany, giving, forgiveness, and understanding. I give Him gifts

each time I give from my heart to others.

The heart of Christmas is not in the presents we give, but

the love that we share. This is what makes Christmas.
