excitingly different

Action Learning Executive MBA®

When you think of Holland you would

normally think of tulips, windmills and clogs

But as a manager you will associate Holland with entrepreneurship, trade

and effective management.

It is the home of companies like Philips, ABN Amro, Heineken, Shell, Amstel, ING, Unilever, AkzoNobel and KLM. It’s not too much of an exaggeration to say that the Dutch invented business on a global scale.

As management development director of one of the larger Dutch companies, I noticed that local and global business schools focused too much on theory and not enough on ap-plication. In 1988 I decided to put my thoughts into action and established Business School Netherlands, and intro-duced an excitingly different approach to management edu-cation called Action Learning.

Since 2004, BSN has been an official Dutch University of Applied Sciences and is now one of the leading business schools in the Netherlands with over 4,000 students and alumni.

“I believe that after reading the brochure, you too will be excited about this new approach.”

Professor Dick GerdzenFounder of Business School Netherlands

Foreword

MISSION STATEMENT

Our ambition is to be an enabler in thedevelopment and success of managers and

organisations worldwide, through unique Action Learning programmes providing answers to current

Management issues.

2

BSN has been actively involved in the develop-ment and education of business professionals since 1988. Our effort herein is not limited to the Dutch border, but continues to expand in-ternationally. over the past 28 years we have witnessed the joining of BSN partners in China, Nigeria, South-Africa, Switzerland, Greece, Czech Republic, Ghana, Rwanda, Cameroon, Sudan, Su-riname, Algeria and Tanzania.

Our international presence has enabled us to launch the development of a greater international

Action Learning community of business pro-fessionals, who all possess a goal-oriented, efficient and problem-solving attitude to-wards business.

To this day it has been our audacity and firm belief in our method – the Action Learning approach that distinguishes us from oth-er business schools. We are convinced that the dynamic, and rapidly changing world in which we live, requires an MBA that focuses on solving real and complex organization-al problems. For us it is crystal clear that the Action Learning MBA is the best option available.

With an annual intake of approximately 600 MBA students, we are one of the largest business schools in the Netherlands. In addi-tion, we have been ranked as number 1 “pro-vider of MBA programme content” by the Dutch management journal “Intermediary” for three years in a row.

Thus it is not surprising that we are re-garded as experts in the field of MBA pro-grammes. Needless to say we are very proud of our market leader status.

Having graduated over 4000 MBA managers from various continents over the past decades, we have demonstrated that Action Learning is a highly effective method for the training and development of business leaders and managers within organisations all over the world.

Our vision

3

The traditional approach is to teach students an overwhelming amount of theory and then ask them to apply the theory to one or more specific problems or cases. You could be building your career in retail but be asked to learn all about the intricacies of producing bio-chemical products. Would that be relevant for you? Probably not. Would it be exciting? In general, not very.

At Business School Netherlands we recognize the fact that the body of knowledge is grow-ing exponentially. Even the most enthusias-tic student is not going to fathom it all in a lifetime, let alone during a two year course. That is why we look at the academic part of the MBA from a different point of view. We start with the problem, your problem, a rel-evant issue that your organization needs to solve. Once identified, you will learn to criti-cally evaluate the available knowledge in the respective field, weigh the alternatives and propose an appropriate solution.

But it doesn’t stop there. The Action Learning concept recognises that once we have implemented the solution and seen the result, the real Action Learning takes place- We don’t take credit for that though - Confucius worked it out ages ago with his renowned statement “I hear and I forget” “I see and remember. I do and understand.”

While we ensure that your theoretical knowl-edge is fully tested during your studies, our focus is not on finding out how well you can remember hundreds of pages of theory and formulas, but rather on how well you apply the knowledge you have gained, take action and learn from your actions.

As you complete each module you will ac-cumulate marks based on the literature you have studied, on how well you have re-searched the available knowledge, evaluated the possible solutions and finally implement-ed your proposal – after all is that not what management is all about?

“But what if my next job takes me into chem-ical engineering or some other area that was not covered, “you may ask. “Would I have missed out on valuable knowledge?” proba-bly not. Because the reality is that the shelf life of knowledge in our rapidly changing world is not very long. If you did an MBA in E-com-merce two or three years ago; you would probably have to revisit the theories today as most of what was considered the truth then is now considered obsolete. Moreover, once you have mastered the art of researching the body of knowledge and selecting the theories relevant to your current problem, you can apply this skill to any challenge you may face in the future, even this challenge is of a com-pletely different nature than the problems you are tackling now. That is why we at BSN believe that the most important part of doing an MBA is learning to learn. If you develop the skills to analyze a problem, can identify the core issues, and know where to look for possible solutions and ideas, you are better equipped to cope with tomorrow’s challeng-es than anyone who can recite yesterday’s theories.

Different because. . . It is real time, real life, project based

Prof. Reg Revans, the founding

Father of Action Learning

We realize that this is not the mainstream way of thinking and frankly we are proud of that – what we offer is an MBA which is un-conventional and proactive, just like most of the managers who study with us.

BSN has been delivering Action Learning MBA’s for 28 years now. We are one of the largest Dutch Business Schools, an official Dutch University of Applied sciences and our programmes are accredited by ACBSP, WIAL, NVAO, EDUQUA, NRTO and CEDEO. BSN is not alone in its recognition of the val-ue of Action Learning! Progressive organisa-tions such as Shell, Exxon, General Electric, Unilever, Rabobank, Aloca Agro, Motorola, Arthur Andersen, General Motors and Lyon-dell Chemical Co. also believe in the Action Learning approach and have achieved amaz-ing results in the field of problem-solving, Identifying competitive advantages, reducing operating costs and becoming learning or-ganisations.

Rather than 40+ students in a class. . .The Action Learning MBA is based on inspiring workshops. During these workshops, you will be exposed to challenging, fresh topics within the various management disciplines. Thanks to the involvement of all participants, this ap-proach exceeds the quality of traditional learn-ing.

You will be working closely with a small team.A fundamental part of Action Learning is the interaction that takes place in small groups of 4-6 students. Group members meet on a regu-lar basis to engage in real-life problem-solving. They contribute to this process with knowl-edge obtained during the workshops, sugges-tions based on their working experience and theories derived on individual research. Con-sequently they provide each other with strong support and perspectives. The workshops and diversity of students ensure that you will be exposed to a wide range of innovative solu-tions to real-life organizational situations.

Challenging study material. Where the student of a traditional MBA basically studies the structure and contents of established text books, the Action Learner utilizes these books merely as reference ma-terial. The courseware of the Action Learning MBA comprises the latest subjects, covered by up-to-date articles and developed by interna-tional experts. This does not only generate an inspiring platform for the workshops, but also ensures high-quality study material that is as close to “new think” as we can possibly get.All your courseware is available for download in CD form of PDF files.

From your first module you will be dealing with real issues in your own organization. In fact, 40% of your study time will be spent within your own organization on projects relevant to your work. As you learn, you ex-perience the exciting changes taking place around you – and so will those that you work with and for. Your learning is not limited to experiences gained from your own company as you are also “consulting” for your fellow students and in the process helping them to solve their problems and challenges. In case you reach an impasse our faculty and advi-sors are always there to point you in the right direction.

In effect this means that your company will receive implementable solutions developed under the guidance of highly proficient se-nior consultants to 10 key issues during the 24 months you are studying – once employ-ers realize, that in fact they are getting valu-able “consulting” input, a highly competent employee and fresh perspectives on their businesses in the process, students normally find it easier to get their tuition fees co-spon-sored by employers. It just makes plain busi-ness sense – the Return On Investment (ROI) is amazing.
