Someone once asked me what I would want Singapore to be like for my grandchildren. We were setting strategic directions then. At first, I thought the question was strange. Most Principals would think of how to better prepare the current generation of students for their future.

Then I realized why the question was important. I had to think not just about the success of the current generation of students but also their ability to create a nation where their children and grandchildren will also find success and significance in a virtuous cycle. What does it mean to nurture generations of educated men who are God-fearing and growing in Grace? I am encouraged that I stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before me, tapping on the rich heritage of faithfulness of more than 130 years of ACS history.

I believe what it means for our gentlemen to be ‘God-fearing and growing in Grace’ can best described by three SENSES and four HONOURS.

A strong sense of worth comes from an honest assessment of who our gentlemen are – fearfully and wonderfully made. They are unique individuals endowed with gifts, talents and limits. A strong sense of worth is the belief that each person is precious in and of himself and not as an extension of his abilities or accomplishments. I believe ACS (BR) provides the unique environment for our gentlemen to learn this as they interact with peers from different streams and different needs.

the world. They are called to be the ‘beacon of truth and light’ wherever they are placed. A sense of worth cannot result in pride and a self-serving nature.

Then, our gentlemen will need a sense of honour. It is about living by the virtues. It is about respect for yourself, your words, other people and the principles you live by. It is about being a person of character in the deepest sense, someone who will do what is right regardless of what other people are doing.

This must be accompanied by a strong sense of purpose. This is the desire to use all they have to contribute positively to their community, beginning with their peers in school and their families, and then to the nation and

  • To make honour explicit, the school will be focusing on four aspects:Honour our self and our words | Ascribe value and respect the gifts and talents they have and follow through on their words (integrity)Honour each other | Respect the gifts and talents in others and see differences not as less but as an opportunity to embrace and celebrate (respect)

Honour effort | Acknowledge that nothing worth doing is easy and respect hard work in themselves and others (commitment)Honour excellence | Embrace excellence as the journey of being our best for the world

This is the education that ACS (BR) seeks to provide for our gentlemen in the years to come and we covet your prayers for the following. PRAY:• that as the school takes a hard look at our current ways

of doing and being and making the necessary changes, staff, students and parents will come alongside to support and embrace the new directions

    • for strong support within the school, at home and in the community of supporters for the work of raising educated men who are God-fearing and growing in Grace

    • that the entire school community will seize divine opportunities to talk about the three senses and four honours

    • for the Lord to touch the hearts of our boys through their time in the school

    • for an attitude of submission to Christ and a deepening desire to be in prayer for God’s purposes to be achieved in our school, especially the baptism of the Holy Spirit

    • that ACS (BR) Gentlemen will learn to be a blessing to others with the gifts and talents that they have

    • for the teachers to continue to be strengthened in the ability to engage students in class, CCA and the various enrichment programmes.

As the new Principal of ACS(P), it is both an honour and a privilege to carry on the legacy left by my predecessors in ACS(P). To briefly introduce myself; I started my teaching career in Kong Hwa School before being transferred to Tao Nan School where I was promoted to Head of Department for Information and Communication Technology. After a three-year hiatus to further my studies, I joined Eunos Primary School where I was appointed Vice-Principal. In 2011, I took the helm at New Town Primary till the current posting to ACS (P).

Having had no experience in a mission-based school, I was very encouraged by the welcome and love extended to me. Within the first few weeks that I have been here, I feel a strong sense of belonging, largely due to the warm reception and support given by the Board of Governors, Barker Road Methodist Church, ACS OBA, parents, leaders and staff members in the family of ACS schools.

Together with my staff, we seek to develop every ACSian into a young man of character, capability and creativity. With the changing educational landscape, the road ahead is strewn with many exciting challenges and I am cognizant that the process to achieving these outcomes can be long and demanding. However, it is a necessary path that we must traverse to equip our pupils for future challenges. I am confident that together with the group of committed and highly effective teachers we have in ACS (P), we will be able to provide the best educationpossible for all pupils to reach their full potential. I am reminded of our founder Bishop Oldham’s purpose of nurturing students to be of service “for God and humanity” when he founded ACS. Hence, we will build upon the good work done thus far through this year’s theme verse drawn from James 1:4 which says, “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything”.

The book of James revolves round the central theme of “faith that works” and concerns primarily with practical matters that are related to our walk with God or, simply put, our lifestyle. In our endeavour to develop our boys into young gentlemen in the four Traits of an ACSian (TACS) – an iHOPEFUL Leader, an Effective Communicator, a Creative Learner, and a Community Collaborator, we will look into how our boys can be better community collaborators to realise Bishop Oldham’s vision of grooming our boys to have a heart of service. Perseverance demands consistency. I am cognizant that the process to achieving these outcomes can be long and demanding but it is a daily task that will grow a little easier the more we do it. Hence we seek your support in the following prayer items:

STAFF• God’s wisdom and strength for the leadership team

to make sound and spirit-filled decisions for the school

    • Staff to growth spiritually and be faithful role‐models to the students

    • Staff to be healthy and protected from all harm as they seek to give of their best to the school

STUDENTS • To be open to the teaching of the Word of God

    • To have a closer walk with God and grow into godly young gentlemen

    • To develop brotherly love and wholesome and lasting friendships

    • To be resilient and able to rise up to challenges that will come their way

PARENTS and FAMILIES• To grow in love as a family unit, well-grounded in faith

    • To love and build strong bonds with the boys and teach them in the way of the Lord

    • To support and guide the boys with the Lord’s patience and wisdom

PERI Upgrading Project• For the safety and wellbeing of the construction

personnel, staff, parents, stakeholders and our boys in this complex campus

    • For God to oversee the entire project and provide guidance for our consultants and the construction company to ensure its smooth and timely completion.

As a new principal in ACS(P), I feel blessed that there is strong conviction and support from all our stakeholders and am confident that with sustained effort and commitment, ACS(P) will play a vital role in being a beacon of light in the community.
