ACS guidelines say: •general chemistry can be 1 semester or 2 •Foundation coursework: typically builds on gen chem, and is the equivalent of 1 semester each of: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical •In-depth coursework: Equivalent of four 1-semester courses (may integrate multiple foundation areas) •Laboratory: 400 hours beyond the introductory chemistry lab, must cover 4 of 5 foundation areas, and may be distributed between foundation and in-depth levels; it must include synthesis, measurement, hands-on with modern instrumentation, computational data analysis, and modeling; UG research can be part of these hours if it is accompanied by a comprehensive written report •UG research: can satisfy up to 4 semester units of the in- depth course requirements, or up to 180 of the lab hours; can be during summer or off-campus Useful information

ACS guidelines say: •general chemistry can be 1 semester or 2

•Foundation coursework: typically builds on gen chem, and is the equivalent of 1 semester each of: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical

•In-depth coursework: Equivalent of four 1-semester courses (may integrate multiple foundation areas)

•Laboratory: 400 hours beyond the introductory chemistry lab, must cover 4 of 5 foundation areas, and may be distributed between foundation and in-depth levels; it must include synthesis, measurement, hands-on with modern instrumentation, computational data analysis, and modeling; UG research can be part of these hours if it is accompanied by a comprehensive written report

•UG research: can satisfy up to 4 semester units of the in-depth course requirements, or up to 180 of the lab hours; can be during summer or off-campus

1 semester unit is 1.5 quarter units1 unit (lecture) is 3 hours/week; 1 unit (lab) is 3 hours/week (45 hours per semester if the semester is 15 weeks long: 1 unit x 3 hours/wk x 15 wks)Assuming semester classes are 3 units; Assuming semesters are 15 weeks + finals; Assuming120 semester units for a degree program (including all requirements)

Unknowns: how GE might change, University requirements (American Institutions requirement, IHE requirement – part of GE, or on top of?); how math, physics, biology courses might change.

Determining how many units are “left” for our major courses in our department:

120 total-48 units GE+7 for double counting 4 chem (Block B) + 3 calc (Block A4)= 79 semester units for chem plus math, physics, biology classes

UNLESS we still have 6 American Institutions + 3 English 102 + (4 NSS101/301 – 4 Block E*) = 9 semester units, leaving us 70 units

To account for math and physics courses, 2 ways: the “spirit” or direct unit conversion•The spirit: A year of calculus, a year of physics + lab + 1 semester of advanced math = 17 semester units•The direct conversion: 39 quarter units of math and physics = 26 semester units (!)

To be conservative: 70 – 26 = 44 semester units for the major chem classes

To account for math, physics, LD biology courses, 2 ways: the “spirit” or direct unit conversion•The spirit: A year of calculus, a year of physics + lab + 1 year of biology and lab = 22 semester units•The direct conversion: 46 quarter units of math and physics = 30.67 semester units (!)

To be conservative: 70 – 31 = 39 semester units for the major chem classes

Proposal A – shows ONLY Chemistry Department Courses

BS Chem: Lower Division: 3 units general chemistry + 1 unit lab3 units inorganic/analytical* + 1 unit lab**3 units organic + 1 unit lab3 units biochemistry*** + 1 unit lab

Upper Division:3 units writing/ethics3 units organic + 2 units lab3 units advanced inorganic 2 units advanced lab (synthetic? TBD)6 units physical + 1 unit lab****3 units instrumental + 2 units lab****

Total available: 44Total units shown above: 41Lab units past gen chem: 10 = 450 hours

There is a gap in time between taking 1st and 2nd semesters of a discipline area. Ok for all disciplines?*seems to combine 318 and 201 lecture and second semester gen chem?**quant lab?***A combination of 280 , 435, 431A ****how were pchem lab and instrumental going to combine?

Note: 400 lab hours past general chemistry = ~9 lab units

BS Biochem Lower Division: 3 units general chemistry + 1 unit lab3 units inorganic/analytical + 1 unit lab3 units organic + 1 unit lab3 units biochemistry* + 1 unit lab

Upper Division**:3 units writing/ethics3 units organic + 2 units lab3 units biochem + 2 units lab3 units advanced biochemistry lab3 units physical or advanced inorganic

Total available: 39Total units shown above: 35Lab units past gen chem: 10 = 450 hours

*A combination of 280 , 435, 431A **The UD biology electives in our current program are not present here – can still lose one lab unit and be within ACS guidelines

Proposal B – shows ONLY Chemistry Department Courses(More traditional)

BS Chem:

6 units general chemistry + 2 units lab6 units organic + 2 units lab3 units inorganic3 units biochemistry + 1 unit lab2 units advanced lab (synthetic?)3 units writing/ethics6 units physical + 1 unit lab*6 units analytical/instrumental + 3 units lab**

Total available: 44Total units shown above: 44Lab units past gen chem: 9 = 405 hours

*how were pchem lab and instrumental going to combine? **201 lab = 1 unit + instrumental lab = 2 units would add up to 3

Note: 400 lab hours past general chemistry = ~9 lab units

BS Biochem

6 units general chemistry + 2 units lab6 units organic + 2 units lab3 units inorganic6 units biochemistry + 2 unit lab2 units advanced lab (biochem)3 units writing/ethics3 units physical3 units analytical + 1 unit lab (quant)UD Biology electives – Need 2 lab units to get enough lab hours, but will be over the unit total.

Total available: 39Total units shown above: 39Lab units past gen chem: 7 = 315 hours

The UD biology electives in our current program are not present here – must add 2lab units and be within ACS guidelines, but then be over the available unit limit.
