Acronyms Used in the Oil & Gas Industry

Why publish a booklet on acronyms? Let us imagine a possible situation:

A young engineer seeks assistance from his direct supervisor on how to conduct a rock typing study. The supervisor says:

“It is easy, young fellow. First you get your CCA and MICP data, sort samples by PTR distribution and Pc behaviour, check for consistency, plot groups on k-PHI domain, get a best fit-line and re-group the samples by PG. Later on you can integrate SCAL, Kr, wettability etc for the RRT grouping. I hope the workflow is clear to you”. The poor engineer will be lost with so many acronyms!

The purpose of this booklet, which captures more than 1000 acronyms related to the Oil & Gas industry is, therefore, to facilitate the life of all young engineers in their day-to-day activities. I cannot claim to have included all possible acronyms, as I am sure there are many more which are not referred to here. In this booklet I capture, primarily, the most common ones utilized in the upstream sector, i.e., the ones related to G&G, Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Engineering etc. As far as logging abbreviations are concerned, I have avoided using all commercial names adopted by the Service Companies. I have restricted the acronyms to the most common ones only. The remaining acronyms pertaining to the support disciplines are here for completeness only and I apologize if I have missed any of them.

The acronyms are grouped by discipline and sorted in alphabetical order. It is possible that some of them pertaining to one discipline, let’s say Reservoir Engineering, are found in a similar discipline (SCAL/PVT/EOR for instance), but this was simply a matter of choice. For this reason, do not give up your search at the first glance. Please check a related discipline and, hopefully, you will find what you are looking for.

I sincerely hope the time I devoted into the preparation of this booklet will add value to your day-to-day working life. Hopefully you will be able to find, more effectively, the meaning of a great number of abbreviations used in our industry.

Acknowledgments I sincerely thank the contribution of all my colleagues at ADCO, PARTEX and PI (Petroleum Institute) for their valuable inputs, by adding acronyms which were missed from the initial draft. I also thank PARTEX for sponsoring the publication of this booklet.
