DDimitri Stoquart founded and operates Stoquart s.a., one of the most successful, mid-sized, single-language

translation vendors in Europe. In April of this year, the Brus-sels’ based Stoquart acquired its French supplier, Celencia. With the acquisition Stoquart became the second largest human translation company in the French market. Dimitri initiated this acquisition during the most turbulent eco-nomic climate of our time.

We wanted to know Stoquart stayed on course and how it all turned out so CSN recently interviewed Dimitri about the acquisition and here’s what he had to say.

CSN- Dimitri, congratulations on your latest acquisition. When

did you initiate due diligence into acquiring Celencia and what were the circumstances leading up to the acquisi-tion?

Dimitri- It was a lengthy process starting in Spring of last year.

The process was extremely long because Celencia was in trouble at the time. When we learned of the company’s troubles we thought; “We know the team, we’re using them already as our supplier, we can’t let them go.” “So why not take them over?”

CSN- Did the economic downturn cause Celencia to get into

trouble and create this opportunity for Stoquart?

Dimitri- I don’t know whether it was specifically from the eco-

nomic downturn.

CSN- Was the deal in serious jeopardy at any time?

Dimitri- The challenge we faced was that the process was a

tricky thing to manage. As I said earlier, the acquisi-tion process started last spring when we were hit by the economic crisis. However, since we had a pretty good year in 2008 there was a delay in the crisis for us a bit. It wasn’t until about the middle of last year that it touched us. By then we were already into the process. Even though keeping on track was a tough decision because we were seeing the market and prices under pressure while we were going in the direction of growth and building we still thought that strategically it was a good idea to go through with it. That way, we would be even stronger when the market begins to improve again. So no I don’t think we ever thought to change our minds. We were going to make this acquisi-tion and we did.

CSN- Has anything changed in your core business model

through this Celencia acquisition?

Dimitri- Well, now we offer an even larger capacity to our MLV

customers. Serving LSP’s has always been the core of our business. I started as a freelancer back in the ‘80’s. Obviously as a French speaker, I was just translating into French, my own language. From there I grew my single-person business into a company of 24 on staff in Belgium and we recently integrated 7 more through the acquisition in France at the end of last year. So it has always been serving MLV’s as a single language vendor with the key language being French. From that we did evolve our model because we also serve direct custom-ers here in Belgium, some large corporations in fact.

The difference in strategy now in France, as opposed to what we have in Belgium, is that they are a 100% sub-contractor. This is a model that I want to see evolving over the coming months. I would like to see them have some direct customers as well.

CSN- Did you also acquire Celencia’s Madagascar operation?

Dimitri- No, we were only interested in the French group that

we were already familiar with for several years and the Madagascar operation was not in the scope of our offer.

CSN- Stoquart is a supplier to 50% of the top 25 largest local-

ization companies. With the acquisition of Celencia did you bring more of those top 25 accounts into your client portfolio?

Dimitri- As far as the subcontracting portfolio, yes, there were

a couple of big MLV’s in their portfolio who we were not working for anymore so it meant we were able to re-start relationships with some past customers through the French office. We also started to work for new MLV’s in various countries such as Eastern Europe for instance which is a new market for us.

CSN- What are your growth expectations from this acquisi-

tion?

Dimitri- It’s pretty early to give projections. Our first year goal

for the French office is basically to break even. We didn’t want to establish too difficult a target because the eco-nomic situation was pretty bad last year. We have been very cautious and also don’t want to go too fast. We also need time to properly integrate the whole team, apply-ing the same processes from the Belgium office into the new, French office.

In terms of turnover I would have to make quick calcu-lations but it won’t be a huge increase because basically we are just looking to break even in France in the first year.

CSN- It’s always very exciting to hear about M&A activity in

our industry, especially activity that was initiated in 2009. Do you have any plans on the horizon for further expan-sion?

Dimitri- Yes, there are so many things that I would like to do.

We’ve already done quite a few things in fact. This is a structure that you might not be aware of in the states but in Europe there is a European Economic Interest grouping

and we’ve created such a grouping a couple of years ago, LETS Communicate, in cooperation with a Danish, Swed-ish and German company.

Also, we have many requests in French Canadian so I would also like to open an office in Canada but I don’t think it will be a short term thing. The Dutch language is something we have a lot of activity in because we’re based in Belgium and this is one of the national languages. We’d like to see this activity increase but I don’t think we will be really targeting any new acquisitions. Celencia is the very first one we did. We’re really a new player on that side of the business so my idea is that you’ve got to move slowly and cautiously and this is what we plan to do. Integrate the French company slowly and perfectly if we can into the whole organization.

CSN- Let’s communicate sounds like a very interesting orga-

nization.

Dimitri- Within this group, we work and translate for each other.

We have a lot of confidence and trust in what each com-pany serves too each other. It’s also totally open with a meeting each quarter in each company’s country. In the meetings we talk about our successes, we talk about our problems, and we discuss how we can work together to sort out issues.

We even exchange staff. One of our in-house transla-tors went to Sweden for a week. Doing the same job re-motely but learning their processes, discovering the peo-ple and the city. We organized a Trados training which was shared across all the offices in the group which is a strength we couldn’t have if we were working indepen-dently without each other.

CSN- I would imagine some of your business processes would

have to be similar in order to operate effectively. How did you decide to group together?

Dimitri- The managers of the companies have known each other

for 10 or 15 years. That’s why we have a lot of trust and we all use similar tools. We basically all use Trados. The German office and our office use Across. The Danish of-fice uses a tool called Web Proof to share PDF’s over web. The German office uses Project Open and so we do too, and we share experience and expertise on this tool but there’s no common platform whatsoever. We’ve discussed this as an option already but it’s pretty complicated so the conclusion we’ve come to is that it’s not worth it. We have so many Trados licenses we’re negotiating with SDL to see what we can do and now with Lionbridge coming back into the tool arena we still don’t know what’s going to happen there but there are most probably economies of scale that we can do with the tools.

CSN- What are your thoughts on the overall state of our in-

dustry now?

Dimitri- I’ve been in the business for close to 25 years which

makes me somewhat of a veteran. It’s quite disappoint-ing that there’s so much price pressure all the time and you can’t talk about quality. This is frustrating to lin-guists who are working hard to produce good quality. It’s a tough industry in fact and now we’ve got to take into account that MT is a reality. The translators have to be aware that there is a lot of work coming up for post edit-ing. This is a clear trend now in the market but trained post editors are scarce and it’s not so easy to convert translators into post editors. There’s a lot of psychology involved but I think it’s all quite interesting because I do like technology but it has good and bad points.

The value of linguists is sometimes not recognized by the industry. I think it’s a pity and I would like to see the focus moving back into translation quality. Not just metrics. Because we use freelancers we know it’s pretty difficult to find good linguists and keep them and at the same time to pay them decent rates because it’s difficult in the market.

CSN- Are you experiencing any improvement in

pricing models?

Dimitri- Over 2009 when it was clearly a difficult

year for almost everyone, on our side we decided that we would never jeopardize quality by going down on prices. It did cost us a lot to be honest because as companies were looking for lower rates we did lose some shares but in the end we did not pro-vide any non-conform service to our cus-tomer base and they are coming back and they are still happy. While it was a tough decision to keep saying no over the year I think it was the right decision.

We did have some customers ask, “Could you add a person to this project?” There will be a first batch of this many words, but you should give us a discount of that many persons. And I said, “We can help you defi-nitely but we cannot afford the discount.” They used another supplier and we actu-ally got batch 2. And now we are working on batch 3. That’s why I think quality still matters.

I still see the same low price modeling but it’s strange because we see the eco-nomic conditions improving. I still think

things are going to change because it’s hard to find good linguists. Also, there was a big problem with the Euro/USD exchange rate which was bad for European suppli-ers and bad for US buyers. Now that the trend is going the other way it will help everyone if it keeps going that way.

CSN- Generally speaking, where do you see the industry

heading at this point?

Dimitri- MT will be stronger, post editing will be another task

for linguists, they will have to accept it, MT will help us, there will be more and more content going out for translation, there will be a lot of things happening with the tools sector because there are so many players with good tools and no standard, I mean many standards but no unifying standard.

reduced and as confidence in the economy is still very untenable.Companies are taking longer to pay than in the past, • a by-poduct of tight cash flow and difficult-to-get credit for many businesses.More and more, companies are sending out their • projects to bid (RFI, RFQ, etc.). We have recently submitted our RFI response in the hopes of being selected to participate in this prospect’s RFP pro-cess! These impersonal and very time-consuming efforts make it very difficult for us to demonstrate value to our clients. This, when providing services which are considered a commodity, is extremely challenging and frequently does not bear fruit.

Probably the most positive aspect of this down mar-ket is that it forces you to do your SWOT analysis and to rethink your processes and methodologies. Having to do more with less and being forced to reduce prices in order to win business compels you to evaluate and implement technology which used to be viewed as “nice to haves” but which now are no longer optional.

CSN-How has Interpro evolved it’s technology and business

processes over the years.

ralph – Interpro was always a technologically-savvy, tools-ori-

ented company. It comes from my background in comput-er-assisted translation and working with clients who had extremely high volumes of documentation that needed to be translated in ridiculously short timeframes. My first hire two weeks after Interpro opened for business was a Project Manager, and the second hire one week later was a software engineer. Our evolution has basically followed the advances in translation-memory technology. We stan-dardized on Trados back in 1996 and are still a Trados shop. We will augment our tools repertoire with a TMS (to be decided) as well as with machine translation. And we will be going live with a translation-centric, workflow-based production management system that will provide

2009 was one of those “let’s see what’s going to happen years” in our industry, as it was with most in-dustries, I assume. With what happened to the global financial markets in Q4 2008, I really don’t think any-one was sure about what was coming next. 2008 was In-terpro’s best year ever, financially speaking, yet giving what was happening, my expectations for 2009 were not very high to say the least. However, we continued to win new clients, maintain market share with existing clients, and finish the year in a profitable position despite the in-creasingly competitive market and continuing pressure to lower prices. Obviously we will never go back to the pre RFI, RFP, RFQ days where clients made decisions based on face-to- face encounters and personal relationships. The game has changed. And as Dennis Barsema warns “Change or die”.

CSN-

Ralph, could you comment on the down market effect to localization in general as well as in

your areas of specialization - both positively and nega-tively?

ralphEven in this depressed market, we are encouraged by

the level of activity we are seeing with new clients, as well as a continued revenue stream from our existing clients. Companies are creating new markets for them-selves by localizing their products into specific languages. In most cases, the cost of developing a new language version of an existing product is miniscule to the initial R&D costs of developing the initial product. The state of the economy has uncovered this unexpected windfall for those of us in the localization industry.

Some of the negatives that we are seeing in this econ-omy are:

on-demand project status and automatic event notifica-tion. Finally, partially due to the demands of the market for lower and lower prices and partially because I have a lot of experience with it and understand how and where it can be effective, we will be seriously discussing with our partners how to best integrate machine translation into our services offering.

Our main objective in implementing this technology is to, simultaneously, make the business development staff’s jobs much easier and less error-prone, to make the Production staff much more efficient, and ultimately to provide our clients with exceptional value at a sensible price. We want to be able to derive every possible com-petitive advantage we can through the use of the tech-nology available to us on the market.

CSN-What are some of the Key market indicators you are

following now.

ralph – Since the lion’s share of Interpro’s revenue is derived

from companies in North America who are expanding and servicing their clientele overseas, we are clearly inter-ested in the volume of international business being con-ducted from the US and Canada out to Europe and Asia, primarily. And since our market niche is software local-ization, trends relative to the research and development spend is of great interest to us. Other than that, we of course follow the primary indicators that influence the

general temperature of the general public: Are markets up? Are they down? What are the latest unemployment numbers? Are more jobs being created than being lost?, etc. These barometers affect how organizations and peo-ple spend their money, and eventually it trickles down to us.

CSN-What are your assumptions and predictions for 2010

and how does that play into your planning for the next 15 years.

ralph – The next 15 years from any point in time is hard to

predict, Keith. The first 15 years for Interpro saw the dawn of the Internet, the coming-to-age of translation memory products, content management systems, trans-lation management systems, and the emergence of ma-chine translation. I believe the next 15 years will cer-tainly see continued automation of the translation sup-ply chain, with machine translation – fed by Google-rich databases culled from ever-growing multilingual content

– as entrenched in the translator’s repertoire of tools as translation memory technology is today. I also think we will see, after so many years of promise, that Artificial Intelligence will become a factor in language develop-ment. And unfortunately for language service providers, translation will continue to be viewed as a commodity and something that companies are not going to want to spend a lot of money on, even though their demands for quality and accelerated delivery will only increase.

CSN- How are you guys doing?

olga-Last year we did well despite the overall economic slow-

down. We have major deployments with several Fortune 100 companies, financial institutions, government entities, non-profits and the academia sector. Companies were looking for ways of optimizing their translation spending and our substantial ROI right upon deployment was an im-portant advantage.

CSN- Tell us about the new product launches.

olga-I’m convinced that PROMT LSP (on its own or bundled

with an enterprise server) is unmatched in the market. We built a product that you can plug into a translation depart-ment or LSP. It’s a completely white box, fully customiz-able with tons of support for QA functionality, dictionary management and sophisticated linguistic rules. I’ve been a buyer on the client side for years, my colleagues worked at LSPs, and when we were developing this product we were all thinking, “Let’s build something that is market driven.” Ultimately, we produced a product that is not expensive, easy-to-use and can be used by anyone in the localization community, large or small.

PROMT is an established name in machine translation and is now becoming a solid player in enterprise au-

tomated translation solutions. The company has a unique offering targeting the professional translation community, both in-house localization departments and translation agencies. The new product, PROMT LSP, can be bundled with PROMT Translation Server, and features innovative approaches to integrating machine translation into a pro-fessional translation workflow. What does this mean to client-side Localization Managers and how will these in-novations accelerate growth in our industry?

Olga Beregovaya is CEO of PROMT Americas, PROMT’s division for enterprise product strategy and deployments. Prior to PROMT, Olga worked as Senior Localization Manag-er for many years at Autodesk and prior to Autodesk, Olga held an executive role with a California-based LSP.

CSN- Tell us about the history and structure of PROMT.

olga-PROMT is 19 years old and the company’s research and

development is in Russia. Product marketing and strategy activities are shared between US, Germany and Russia.

CSN- Was the US company acquired?

olga-No. US operations were started from scratch. Most of

PROMT’s US presence was limited to our desktop products. The company saw a market need for elaborate and flexible enterprise solutions that are capable of producing high-quality translations. Thus, the decision was made to run the enterprise product line from the US due to the global nature of US business.

CSN- Do you have different products depending on the end

user?

olga-There is PROMT LSP and PROMT Freelance. The differ-

ence is pretty much in licensing but with the Freelance, the freelancer is not going to be limited in access to any translation modules or functionality. The only limitation for the freelancer is one language pair. The Freelance product will be an ideal for independent translators and also for SLVs. The LSP solution works in a .NET -based en-vironment; it is a client-server side product with shared collaborative functionality. The translation engine, func-tionality and access to modules are the same; we give ac-cess to the best translation functionality no matter what the type of engine use it will be.

PROMT Translation Server or PTS makes most sense for either major web venues or large enterprise clients. This product is bundled with our LSP product using client/server logic. For example, a corporate client can have a group that manages linguistic assets, builds dictionaries and translation memories, and trains engines through a combination of rule-based and statistical methods. This group will manage the enterprise server and use it as a part of their localization process, but the user base of the enterprise server can be the entire company, accessing it through their web browser or using plug-ins from within their MS Office suite. Lastly, the ability to run on VMWare with a tiny fraction of a second in processing delays is a significant money saver for enterprises.

CSN- With these new product releases it looks like you have

added more functionality. Are there any measurable im-provements in the automated language translation pro-cess?

olga-We worked actively with

US enterprise clients and the professional translators’ community. We completely revamped the architecture and the translation modules. First of all, the entire under-lying language base has been extended and the language-specific general lexicons are much larger now. We’ve identified a handful of gram-matical structures that can handle more complex syntax. You will see major quality im-provements in the new release.

LSP & Freelance don’t involve our newly developed hy-brid engine coming later this year. For our enterprise clients there is an added benefit of having access to our hybrid engine which helps us produce results that are grammatically accurate, domain-relevant and fluent.

CSN- Do you have any case studies available on the new

product releases?

olga-We have ROI and throughput data from the previous

version of the product and a solid understanding of the productivity gains and savings from our existing clients. One of our corporate clients actually presented at a con-ference last year and mentioned 30% to 40% in productiv-ity gains and cost savings. This matches our in-house case studies. This year we will be presenting our PayPal case study at AMTA and expect the numbers to be the same or even higher.

We also have deployments with clients outside of lo-calization like DOD, financial institutions, and religious organizations that do not post-edit at all. Their ROI is even higher; the greatest advantage for these clients is the ability now to translate something that was not trans-lated before.

CSN- How is the new product line being received?

olga-Extremely well. Existing clients are happy with the up-

grade; we are doing many pilots, which are gateways to preorders, or at least major interest. We have run a cou-ple of very well-received webinars, with more planned.

We also had professional translator interest in an in-depth training program, which we are now starting to offer. One of the promi-nent industry communities on LinkedIn called our prod-uct “the most anticipated product”.

At the moment post-ed-iting MT output is receiving lots of press and we have lots of reporting tools in our product to address this issue. We have been doing many pilots, where we part-ner with LSPs and measure MT quality improvement side-by-side with decrease

in their post-editing time.

CSN- Speaking of partnerships, do you have any current or

olga-Just in the last 12 months we have integrated with We-

Localize’s GlobalSight, Sajan, we have a plugin from Al-chemy Publisher, SDL Idiom, SDL TMS, and Ontram with several more integrations planned for the immediate future. We see that the overall translation supply chain market is changing and we make a point of staying on top of industry demands by providing a variety of integration scenarios.

CSN- Are LSPs using your product now?

olga-“We’ve had a pretty significant buy-in, for example

parts of Translations.com are using our software already. Welocalize is using our product and are very skilled in post-editing our output; we work together on multiple projects. Logrus, our post-editing partner for Russian, is providing us with rather encouraging feedback on their post-editing figures within their methodology. SimulTrans is utilizing our latest LSP version, with their in-house lin-guists focusing on tuning the engine for typical L10N ter-minology and style. A handful of smaller LSPs are using our products as well and we definitely expect to see more engagement from the LSP community.”

CSN- That’s great to hear such significant growth anticipa-

tion.

olga-to the best of my knowledge there isn’t a product out

there that caters to LSP and freelancers which is afford-able, has all the functionality of the major enterprise de-ployments, and does not require costly hardware. We can run on 200 MB of operational memory without any loss in translation quality, which is pretty unique for an MT solution with our level of complexity.

CSN- Cost savings and increases in speed to market are typi-

cally addressed. I think this new rollout allows access to profitable expansion opportunities and helps to stimulate overall international economic growth.

olga-Absolutely. Our clients have more visibility into what

their field offices are doing. Management’s focus is shift-ing to global markets, not just the U.S. All our trans-lation pairs are bi-directional. Initially we were receiv-ing requests for translation mostly from English and now we see that there’s a lot of demand for translation into English. Organizations want to crowdsource more in that country or collect more market data from that country.

CSN- And this new shift is being facilitated by a new prod-

uct.

olga-What helps our users is our white-box approach. Our

professional tools offer a great deal of automation, both in terms of linguistic assets management and engine cus-tomization. With the new product, clients can perform automated steps independently so there is no professional services lock-in. Lastly, our clients have access to our API to integrate our engine into their in-house applications.

CSN- Freedom is a huge issue now. Is PROMT a part of the

TAUS TDA initiative as well?

olga-We are TDA founding members, contributed some of our

dictionaries and are pooling TDA Data to train the hybrid piece of our engine. Once the hybrid has been launched, we will be looking into API-based integration with the TDA portal.

CSN- Olga, thank you for your time and valuable insight. Your

product is definitely a paradigm shifter for the localiza-tion industry. I’m sure in the next few months we will hear many positive responses from the field.

A case study: In this age of globalization, high-quality, speedy, and cost-efficient localization of a company’s en-tire product communication is becoming an increasingly important competitive factor in all industries.

the SituatioN: traNSlatioN Volume growth exCeeDS exiStiNg CapaCitieS

Voith Turbo Scharfenberg manufactures automatic cou-

plers, front-end systems, and control components for rail vehicles. In 2006, the technical editors and translators of Voith Turbo, a global player in the field of couplers and front-end systems, were confronted with a challenge when the company’s translation volume increased by al-most 80 percent.

In its 2007 fiscal year, Voith Turbo Scharfenberg gener-ated revenues of approximately $122.5 million (EUR 100 million) worldwide. Because of increased production and international activity, multilingual documents that must be available when the products are shipped play a major role. The documents cover a wide range: on one hand, there are highly standardized manuals and operating guides that are characterized by a high degree of repeti-tion. On the other, there are product-related information, specifications, and calculations for preparing quotations, which may change more frequently and are more unique.

At Voith, requests for needed foreign-language versions of these texts came directly from the sales and project departments. The company’s internal eight-man team of editors and translators is responsible for English, Dutch, French, and Spanish. Eastern European languages are handled by an external service provider. For the Chinese localization, Voith cooperates with specialists on site.

With tight turnaround times and multiple file formats, they found their current system insufficient to serve the many departments that needed translations. The com-pany knew that translation volumes would continue to grow, and they were looking for a scalable workflow sys-tem that could grow with them.

the ChalleNgeS: CoNtrol proCeSSeS while optimiziNg workflow aND reDuCiNg CoStS

“We faced the challenge of handling the increased transla-tion volume with the same number of employees,” com-mented Olaf Haulsen, responsible team head at Voith.

The language team started looking for a way to control the translation process with the help of IT in order to optimize workflows and reduce working time and costs. The previous translation system did not have a workflow component.

The central criteria for the selection of a corporate translation management system (TMS) were these:

the SolutioN: phaSeD iNStallatioN aND iNtegratioN

The language specialists identified computer-aided translations in conjunction with seamless processes as the key to success. The decision makers thought that the Across Systems Language Server would fulfill these re-quirements due to its primary ability to provide a central database that could consolidate all terminology but also maintain specialized terminology for distinct divisions. It also had a workflow component that allows for easy col-laboration with both internal and external project team members. A central argument in favor of using Across Sys-tems was that the introduction of this new system would be less expensive than an update of the previous transla-tion system even without adding a workflow component to the existing system. Therefore, they implemented the Across Systems Language Server, which now has been in use since early 2007.

The company has expanded its usage of the translation management technology in three phases. After a success-ful introduction of the technology at the Scharfenberg di-vision of Voith Turbo, it expanded the use of it throughout the entire Voith Turbo group, beginning in May 2009. The full Voith Turbo group division accounts for approximately $1.5 billion in revenue, and has 40 companies worldwide that needed to be linked to the system.

And finally, it has connected the Across Language Server to the upstream CMS system, Schema ST4, used for cre-ation and maintenance of new content throughout Voith Turbo.

reSultS: iNCreaSeD proDuCtiVity, reDuCeD CoStS aND greater CoNtrol

Overall, the company now has a continuous linguistic supply chain, from source text creation to completion of multilingual documents. An open interface enables both the TMS and CMS systems to initiate and control work-flows automatically, which saves the company as much as 55% per word in translation costs. Moreover, the company has gained better control over its linguistic assets, in-creased consistency and quality, and has shortened time to market of its documentation.

uNiform worDiNg through Semi-automateD traNSla-tioN

By deploying the Across Systems Language Server, Voith Turbo was able to optimize the quality of its technical texts and wording. Existing translations and terminology were transferred from the former system to the Language Server, where they have been maintained, updated when necessary, and expanded with additional entries. over, definitions, images, and additional details such as grammatical information about the term or notes regard-ing the correct use are stored for the individual terms. The Across Language Server has served as a central re-pository for all translations of the technical manuals and product descriptions.

The team members of the external language service provider (LSP) access the system in order to process tasks assigned by Voith. During translation, the system dis-plays wording proposals that can be adopted as they are or edited if necessary. Differences between the current sentence and the entry in the translation memory are highlighted. So-called 100% matches – sentences that are identical in the source text and in the translation memory

– can be directly inserted as pre-translations in the text to be edited.

“Having our product terminology – which is very spe-cific at times – under control is important to us,” explains Olaf Haulsen. “For example, the English equivalent for the German word ‘Kupplung’ depends on whether the connection between trains (coupler) or the gearbox (cou-pling) is meant.” To make sure he is using the correct word, the translator can use the concordance search, i.e. the search for specific text passages, to display sentences containing the required word from the crossTank transla-tion memory. In this way, the translator can see the con-text in which a word was used in the past.

Thanks to this procedure, the technical manuals can be delivered almost simultaneously upon completion of the products. Voith receives the preliminary version of the manual at the first article inspection. Taking all com-ments into consideration, the LSP can customize docu-mentation within a very short time, enabling the delivery of a customer-specific manual along with the product.

“Last year, we processed a translation volume of 600,000 words,” said Haulsen. “The translation memory of the Across Language Server enabled us to localize up to 80 percent of these texts automatically.”

SeamleSS proCeSSeS for Short reaCtioN timeS

With the help of Across Systems, Voith Turbo imple-mented seamless workflows for processing the transla-tions. The editors and translators are sent information about a new documentation project as soon as an order is received, as the compilation of the manuals takes place concurrently with the development and production. First, they receive a parts list via the ERP system that provides an overview of all components to be described; this parts list is the basis for the documentation. The translation project is set up in the Language Server, and the assigned translator is automatically informed by the system. The translator retrieves the task, processes it, and sends the translation back to Voith’s Language Server. Subsequently, the data is synchronized by the system.

Apart from the internal staff of Voith Turbo, the ex-ternal service providers have been integrated in the workflow by way of the collaboration tool crossGrid. This module enables direct interaction between the Language Server deployed at Voith and the Language Server of the LSP. This approach allows shared use of language resourc-es and seamless delegation and processing of projects. Project managers can track the current editing status of the translations and take action if necessary.

“In this way we are able to react promptly to urgent re-quests of our project management and sales staff,” says Olaf Haulsen.

To further optimize the departmental workflows, Voith Turbo connected the XML-based editorial and content management system, SCHEMA ST4, which is used for cre-ating the documentation, to the Across Language Server.

“The translation management system facilitates the handling of the XML data, enabling efficient processing of the texts and contents,” says Haulsen.

SCHEMA, in turn, has a filter that identifies the data to be translated and seamlessly forwards the data to the translation management system via an interface. The sys-tems automatically initiate and control the workflow.

With the full integration now complete, the Voith Turbo team is satisfied that they can continue to meet their vol-ume needs as well as requirements of speed, consistency, quality and reduced costs.

Haulsen concludes with this summary, “The increased text volume threatened to impair the translation quality. By deploying the Across Language Server, we are able to provide our customers with high-quality translations in a short time. And even better, in the editorial and transla-tion teams, staff numbers have remained unchanged.”
