Black Eyed Peas with David Guetta as guest performer wowed crowds at Estadio Vicente Claderon, Madrid on July 14th.

Jamie Cullum will be performing at Sohail Castle in Fuengirola on August 4th. Although primarily a jazz musician, Jamie Cullum performs in a wide range of styles and is generally regarded as a "crossover" artist with his musical roots firmly based in jazz. In 2007 Cullum won the Ronnie Scotts Jazz Award for “Best British Male”. Cullum is well known not only for his abilities on the piano, but also for his style and charisma. Cullum never works to a set list and on average his gigs last just over two hours. AUGUST 13TH

Sir Tom Jones will be performing at Hotel Puente Romano, Marbella on August 18th. The Welsh singer, noted for his powerful voice has sung many styles of music from pop, rock, dance to country, soul & gospel. His first international hit single was “Its Not Unusual”. He has sold over 100 million records. He was awarded a CBE in 1999 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 for his services to music. In 2000 Tom Jones performed for US President Bill Clinton on New Year’s Eve at the Millennium celebrations in Washington D.C. Tom Jones received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music in 2003.

LA TOMATINA TOMATO FESTIVAL

La Tomatina Tomato Festival, one of Spain’s maddest festivals is held in August in Bunyol near Valencia. It is the worlds biggest tomato fight. The sheer number of people who turn up for this event means that its extremely difficult to get anywhere near the central area where the tomato lorries arrive but the street partying goes on no matter where you are. RULES OF LA TOMATINA The Bunyol Town Council has set down the following rules:

It is illegal to bring any kind of bottles or other objects that could cause an accident. You must not tear t-shirts. Tomatoes must be crushed before throwing so that they don't hurt anybody. You must be careful to avoid the lorries, which carry the tomatoes. As soon as you hear the 2nd banger you must stop throwing tomatoes.

In the La Tomatina festival there has never been a mishap so please respect these rules and the people.

FERIA DE MALAGA

Malagas annual festival is one of the biggest on the national calendar of fiestas. The Feria begins with the 'Pregón de la Feria' which is the official announcement of the opening of the festival which is read out by a famous local celebrity from the balcony of the town hall. An enormous firework display and ten days of raucous partying Andaluz style follow this with open-air bars serving thousands of litres of sherry, spontaneous flamenco dancing in the street and the city's main annual bullfighting festival at the city's Plaza de Toros. By day activities are centred around Marques de Larios in the heart of the city centre just opposite the port. Throughout the city beautiful women with their daughters stroll around in flamenco dresses whilst the city's horse and cart taxis are decorated with colourful ribbons and their drivers wear traditional costumes. Street music and sherry consumption are ever present whilst there's plenty of entertainment to keep the children amused. The Feria de Día lasts from around noon until 7pm then there's a lull before the storm as the evening session begins. By night the focus of the Feria moves to the Real de la Feria on the outskirts of the city where the Feria de Noche starts to warm up around 9pm and continues until dawn. This is a huge fairground with over 200 marquees (casetas) specifically erected for the Feria each of which houses different groups of Malagueños, known as peñas, who meet here to party every evening. These casetas are open to visitors and you can buy food and tapas there whilst enjoying the party. There are shuttle buses running back and to from the city centre to the fairground throughout the night whilst the taxi business does a roaring trade.


THE SANLUCAR HORSE RACES

The Sanlucar Horse Races or "Carreras de Caballos" take place in August on the beach at Sanlúcar de Barrameda near Jerez de la Frontera in Andalucia. Officially these famous horse races have been taking place since 1845 but in actual fact they were happening way before that. It was in 1845 that the Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar de Barrameda was established thus making the races the first ever regulated horse races in the whole of Spain. However, long before the races were officially recognised there is evidence that much more informal races took place along the sands between the owners of working horses, which were used to transport fish from the port to local towns and markets.

THE MYSTERY PLAY OF ELX

The Mystery Play of Elx, or Elche, is one of Spain’s oldest and greatest cultural events and is truly a never-to-be-forgotten experience, even amongst the multitude of compelling Spanish Festivals. The production is held annually at the Basilica of Santa Maria every August 14th and 15th. In the Basilica itself there is a temporary ramped stage in the central transept, a false ceiling, stage machinery to open the Gates of heaven and lower and raise angels and the Virgin herself. At the play’s moving climax, a shower of silver tinsel billows from above during the Virgin’s coronation. All this is accompanied by breathtaking choral music, employing Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque melodies and exquisitely performed by a completely amateur choir recruited specifically for the festival. The Mystery Play is the culmination of the celebrations in Elche in honour of the town’s patroness, the Virgin of the Assumption. Beginning with colourful and noisy parades of Moors and Christians, commemorating the Christian Reconquest of Elche in 1265, and culminating on the 15th, the Day of the Assumption of the Virgin, Elche becomes a spectacular mix of religious piety and pagan partying! The Mystery Play itself is actually in two separate acts – La Vespra (the eve of death) which is performed on the 14th and La Festa (the assumption and coronation) on the 15th. Immediately after the first part, the vigil of the Virgin’s body occurs when there is a candle-lit procession through the Walled City’s old streets. A further procession follows the next morning as the image of the Virgin is carried through the Old Quarter. The whole celebration is rounded off with, naturally, a midnight firework display, followed by a lot of partying. Elche is a city worth spending time in because of its incredible Palm Grove – Palmeral de Elche – of more than 200,000 trees, a World Heritage Site, as well as the Mystery Play itself

Parking is a total nightmare, which is why we never move our van, apart from the one day the local council decided to re-tarmac our road. Signs were put up on the buildings along the street saying no parking on a particular day as work began at 7.00. Nobody bothered moving until the local police showed up at about 8.00. Those that didn’t move their cars had them towed away. Boy do those guys work fast. Hooks under the rear wheels lift it up and away it goes! There isn’t anywhere to let our poor dog off the lead for a long run around. Beaches don’t allow dogs and neither do the small parks we’ve found on our travels. Need to purchase him a doggy running machine for indoors – lol. Iceland, although one of our favourite stores (especially their sticky chicken skewers) have a nasty habit of overcharging at the tills. First visit I was charged for 3 packs of minted lamb chops when I had only purchased one. Didn’t notice the mistake until we got home so nothing I could do about it. Second visit - the till tried to ring up €154 for an English newspaper. Now I know it was all about the Royal Wedding but I thought that was just a little bit too steep!! I love Mercadona and Bally for shopping!! Even if I don’t know exactly what all the goodies in some of the packets are? The shutters at our windows whilst adding a little bit of extra security and stopping the glaring light of the sun during the day also make me think that it’s the middle of the night, even if I wake up at 8 or 9 in the morning. Has totally messed up my body time clock. Whilst all the car drivers seem to follow the rules of the road, scooters are a total law unto themselves, going the wrong way down streets and shooting past traffic lights. The police look very scary! Even the traffic wardens carry guns or batons. I find that I can read Spanish a lot easier than I can speak it. The trains are clean, punctual and very cheap. Coffee sombre in a glass is scrummy! Alcoholic drinks measures are ENORMOUS!! Hic! Cheers!!


Getting published used to be a hard thing to do when print only appeared on paper. Today anyone who fancies themselves as a writer of sorts to post their words, thoughts and knowledge online. The even newer addition of web logging - or blogging for short - brings even greater possibilities for expressing yourself to a mass audience. Back to basics, a blog is pretty much an online diary, often interactive, that is updated on a regular basis. A blog can include text, images and even sound files. Some bloggers just write for the benefit of long-distance family and friends, while others aim to make a living out of it. The format generally places the most recent blog, or post, at the top and the oldest at the bottom ranging in chronological order. Blogs can be personal diaries or, more often than not, written on a particular subject area, such as news and entertainment. Or they can be educational, about any kind of hobby, craft or leisure activity. Most novice bloggers, however, write about what they know and what they are most passionate about in life, whatever that may be. The primary author of a blog, of course, will fuel the content, though visitors should be able to add comments, so if you're thinking of starting one, you really need to know what you're talking about. More importantly, you really need to have something to say that will interest other people who may share your passions. Writing skills and a sense of humour are paramount to blogging and anyone can do it with little technical know-how. You will, however, need to give careful consideration to the type of blog platform to choose - that is the software you use to create your blog and how you get it online. For beginners who just fancy playing around with blogging for fun, there are many free blog platforms available. These provide free software to create and host your blog. Different free blogging platforms offer different levels of service. Some, like Blogger.com and WordPress.com, offer both the platform, domain name and hosting for free. Others offer the platform for free and host your blog under their domain name free of charge. Some will require you to pay for certain things, such as creating your own domain name if desired. Free blog platforms provide you with basic design templates. While these templates suit a beginner, if you want to take your blog to a wider audience and earn money from advertising you will really need to pay a designer to create a more unique template. This, though, can develop in time. The main benefit of free blog platforms is ease of use. Most design templates can be set up in a matter of minutes and involve only filling in a few details and choosing your design template. Thankfully, you need to know very little about the technical side of the internet. You just need to add a little sparkle with your writing, knowledge or comments in a concise, reader-friendly way.

DRIVING EACH OTHER NUTS

Next time you and your partner go out together, it may be a good idea to get a taxi or use public transport rather than the car. According to recent research, put a couple together in a car and the only place they're likely to drive each other is round the bend. The survey, by breakdown specialist Green Flag, found that one-in-five people regularly argued with their partner about their driving skills and bad habits. We're not too happy about lending our pride and joy to each other either. Women are slightly more trusting than men, with three-quarters saying they would allow their partner to use their car. When it comes to men, only two-thirds would be prepared to hand over the keys. There is some basis for caution here: one-in-five respondents admitted to having had an accident in their partner's car. How bad can the differences become? Well, among the 17 to 24-year-olds, almost one in 10 had broken up with a partner over their car. The figure for all ages is slightly lower, with just three per cent admitting a car was the reason for a relationship break-up. When it comes to fixing things, half of the women surveyed said they would trust their partner to carry out minor maintenance checks or repairs, yet eight in 10 men said they would never ask their partner for help. When asked if they have ever stopped to help someone who had broken down, half of men said they had helped, compared with only one-in-five women. Maybe that shows a sensible regard for safety in public, but there is a generational difference too. Older people were more willing to help, with over a third of drivers aged over 55 having stopped to help someone, whereas only a tenth of the 17 to 24-year-olds surveyed had ever offered to assist. The advice for helping to maintain a happy relationship would seem to be straightforward then: if you're going out, especially on a nice romantic date, keep your eyes off the road and your hands off the wheel and leave the car behind.


TUNED IN TO SAFER DRIVING

Most drivers turn up the car stereo to make their car journeys more entertaining, but having a little sing song to your favourite music in the car may actually reduce your chances of having an accident. Whether you listening to relaxing music or tunes to perk you up, what you listen to in the car has a direct effect on your mood. As a result, 84 per cent of motorists questioned in a survey by Sainsbury's Car Insurance believe listening to music helps them to relax when driving. Half believe that music helps them to concentrate on the road and 65 per cent also said music helps them to stay awake while driving. Worryingly, however, the findings also show that in a minority of cases music can result in more dangerous driving habits. Around nine per cent of motorists confessed to being distracted while listening to music when driving - that equates to about 2.9 million drivers out there on the roads - and 14 per cent said they tended to drive faster while six per cent admitted to driving more aggressively. Lucy Hunter, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, says, "Many motorists clearly enjoy listening to music when they drive, but it's important to recognise the effect it has on your driving and pick your music accordingly. "It may well be tempting to listen to music to perk yourself up, but our advice if you feel tired is to pull over and have a break. Similarly, consider switching to something soothing if you're beginning to feel a little irate." The impact of music on your driving habits can be linked to the genre you listen to and your age. Ten per cent of motorists aged 35 and under, who tend to listen to pop, rock, hip hop or dance, said music made them drive more aggressively and 22 per cent said it made them go faster. However, 84 per cent of motorists aged 45 and over, the majority of whom listen to classical music, said it helped them to relax when driving. In terms of the most popular music to listen to when driving, classical and general pop are joint top, each enjoyed by 13 per cent of motorists. Rock is second (11 per cent) followed by country and western (5 per cent). A further 17 per cent of motorists enjoy everything from hip hop and dance to easy listening and jazz. Surprisingly, the biggest group of music loving motorists, 31 per cent of people, are not at all fussed which type of music is played and are happy to listen to anything.


AVOIDING PAINFUL GOLF HAZARDS

There are some serious hazards associated with the game of golf that have nothing to do with water and sand. There are fast flying balls ready to clonk you on the head, lightening threatening to strike you down on the green and the occasional idiot in a runaway golf cart. However, the hazard most likely to strike you is a serious back injury. Swinging a golf club puts a tremendous strain on the back. As a result, golfers injure their backs more than any other part of their body. Statistics show that back injuries make up around 50 per cent of all the injuries sustained by male golfers, including professionals. In the 1980s, Jack Nicklaus' career almost ended because of back problems. The good news is that injuries don't have to be par for the course for golfers. The first mistake to avoid is taking up golf in order to get in shape. If this is your main reason for picking up clubs, you'll be much better off getting in shape before you play. You'll get far more enjoyment out of it and much less pain. If you are really out of shape, consider having a few personal training sessions with a qualified fitness instructor. They can help improve your general level of fitness and set you on a training regime to help with your game of golf and a stretching routine to help reduce the likelihood of back strain when you play. Professional golfers take time to stretch and warm up so you should too. Once you're in good enough shape to take up your clubs, learn the proper swing technique and body mechanics from a professional golf tutor, not from your know-it-all friends and family. A golf tutor will teach you how to maximise your swing without putting undue strain on your delicate back. You should also be taught the safest way to lift and carry your heavy golf bag to avoid injury. When buying golf equipment, buy the best quality that you can afford. Buying second-hand is a financially savvy option, but you risk buying equipment that doesn't fit your size and shape, which can put added strain on your body. If you are buying second hand, take advice from a golf shop on the best sizes for you and then use their recommendations to shop around in online auctions or private listings. Before you do anything, make sure you visit your GP, especially if you are over 35, overweight, easily fatigued, smoke heavily or have other health problems. Oh, and if you do hear any warnings of lightening strikes whilst you're playing, remember that a metal golf club makes for a rather effective lightening conductor, so it's probably best if you avoid swinging it above your head.

Breast enlargements were once thought of as tacky and the domain of glamour models and footballers' wives, but it seems the taboo has lifted, as more of us are opting for this procedure. When it comes to cosmetic surgery, forget facelifts, liposuction and tummy tucks, breast enlargement is the most popular procedure and has been for the past 20 years.

Unlike the boob jobs of old - think Pamela Andersen and Jordan - the breast enlargements of today are less obvious and more natural. The dramatic rise in people undergoing cosmetic treatments is indicative of peoples changing attitudes to cosmetic surgery. Patients are more than happy to tell people that they have had surgery and often recommended a particular surgeon to their friends. According to industry estimates, women spent a staggering €100 million on breast implants last year and this looks set to rise. But despite its rising popularity, breast enlargement is not something that you should rush into. The invasive surgery is no different from any other operation, involves months of aftercare and can take a while to adapt to. With the popularity of surgery on the increase it is important to highlight the need for each patient to undergo a thorough consultation. For any patient who is considering having surgical treatment they should check their clinic's credentials. Despite numerous celebrities implant disasters and its once tacky image, breast augmentation remains the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, with the majority of patients between 25 and 35 years old.

The process of skin restoring the pH levels on its own can take up as much as half and hour or more. By using a skin toner, the pH level of your skin is restored instantly. You should always choose a toner appropriate for your skin type. A wide variety of toners are available, some of which provide deeper cleansing, some are extra moisturising, some contain alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) to exfoliate dead skin cells, and some are gentle. Whatever your skin type and needs, you should try to avoid toners that have a base of alcohol, which dries the skin and harms the soluble collagen below the surface of the skin. Choose instead an alcohol-free toner for your skin type. There are many toners that contain natural ingredients including herbs and essential oils. The common herbs and essential oils used in toners include witch hazel, geranium, honey, lemon, ivy, sage, nettle and burdock. Rosewater for normal or dry/sensitive skin and witch hazel for oilier skins are ideal bases for toners. Rosewater helps keep skin and face moisturised, fresh and balances the pH levels. Witch hazel has a tendency to dry the skin so it's ideal to combine it with moisturisers such as vitamin E or honey. Oily skin benefits from juniper or lemongrass whereas drier skins would benefit from rose or sandalwood. Apply the skin toner to a cotton ball and sweep it gently across your face using smooth, gentle upward strokes or sprayed on the face. The cotton wool should come out relatively clean when toning. If it's not clean it indicates the cleansing has not been done properly. Don't be tempted to tone the skin whenever you feel it has become dirty. It should be used only after the skin has completed a cleansing routine and not as a substitute for cleansing. Your toner must function as a toner and not as a cleanser.

If you have just splashed out a small fortune buying your dream home, the chances are that funds are now pretty tight. That is nearly always the case for first time buyers, who once they have moved into their new nest must think about how best to decorate and furnish it without breaking the bank. When looking for home furnishings, try to think outside the box. You might not want to eat off that set bright pottery plates but they might make colourful wall hangings. Unless you have a large home, select furniture and accessories on a small scale. They'll fit into most spaces as you move them around in your home. Storage is in short supply in most homes. Select furniture pieces that offer drawers or hanging space, such as a chest of drawers or an armoire. When furnishing a living room or family room, choose two-seater sofas rather than one huge sofa. They'll be easier to move and can be used forming a corner seating area opposite each other to create a conversation spot, or separately in different rooms of your home. Select a pleasing natural or neutral colour such as tan, camel, navy, dark green or black for upholstered furniture pieces. This will be your anchor colour. Make sure the fabric is durable so it holds up under years of use. Gather together a collection of pillows, fabrics and accessories that harmonise with your anchor colour. You'll be able to change the look with the seasons, giving your furniture a new, fresh look throughout the year. METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 190C/Gas Mark 5. 2. Using a rolling pin, roll each slice of bread very flatly then lightly brush each side with a little oil. 3. Press each bread piece into a deep sided muffin pan or a mini pudding basin at an angle so that the bread forms a flower shape. 4. Cook in the preheated oven for 5 - 8 minutes or until crisp, lightly browned and the baskets holds its shape when lifted from the pan. 5. Meanwhile, preheat the grill to medium and then cook the bacon for 3 - 5 minutes or until thoroughly cooked. Then using a pair of scissors cut each rasher into small dices. 6. Beat the eggs together with the chives in a jug. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until foaming, then add the egg mixture and snipped bacon using a wooden spoon, cook, stirring constantly for approximately 3 - 5 minutes or until lightly scrambled. Taste and season if necessary. 7. Place the bread baskets on serving plates then divide the egg and bacon mixture between the baskets and serve immediately. Do not leave these to stand for long as the bread will go soggy.

SCRAMBLED EGG AND BACON BASKETS

These egg and bacon baskets are a fun way of turning a breakfast favourite into a truly tasty snack or dinner. Serves 4.

A perfect partner at any restaurant or at a dinner party is port and creamy blue cheese. A non-vintage port is a perfect partner for Creamy stilton, while vintage port pairs beautifully with feisty cheeses such as gorgonzola.

SWEET WHITE FOR CHEESE

When serving a sumptuous cheese platter at a dinner party, remove the reds and opt for a fruity, vibrant white to complement your range of cheese. Sweet, spicy and fruity German wines such as gewürztraminers and rieslings are good all-rounders. For blue-veined cheeses, choose a sweet dessert wine. These will also work well if you are also serving desserts at the table.

PUNGENT CHEESES AND REDS

If you must be awkward and insist on red with your cheese platter, choose a concentrated, rich red such as Amarone della Valpolicella. This Italian dry red is made from air-dried grapes and can stand up to the most pungent cheeses including Parmigiano-Reggiano and Pecorino. A cheaper alternative is Ripasso di Valpolicella made in the same region.

A camel safari is a great way to see the desert, visiting the villages, seeing wildlife and riding across the open desert sands. Typical camel safaris organised around Jaisalmer take in the architectural ruins of Lodurva, which was the former capital of the Bhatti Rajput desert kingdom before the founding of Jaisalmer, the Anasagar oasis, the sand dunes of Samm and the water source of Moolsagar where village women gather with pitchers at dusk. Night halts on basic safaris are at villages on the way or temporary bivouac camps in the desert scrub, where camels are hobbled and let out to graze. Packing the right clothing is important on one of these holidays as the climate is extreme. We are famed as a nation of animal lovers. Dogs, cats, fluffy bunny rabbits, small furry caged animals, birds, reptiles; we love them all. But animal care comes with its own set of risks and problems, with one serious area for concern being cleanliness and hygiene. And that is one in which you cannot afford to cut corners because there can often be a risk of passing on infections to members of the family. One of the biggest risks can be toxoplasmosis - a disease which can be passed to humans through direct contact with contaminated cat faeces. This can occur through hand-to-mouth contact following gardening or cleaning a cat's litter box. But you can make 100 per cent sure you don't contract it by always using rubber gloves while doing the chore. But what if your cat misses the litter box altogether? Accidents happen, and getting to the stain fast is the key to dealing with the problem and the smell. Here's our foolproof guide: Soak up as much liquid as possible. Use old bath towels (or a lot of paper towels) and stand on them. Keep doing this until no more moisture comes up. To clean, use one of the commercial carpet cleaners or make your own using 1 teaspoon liquid dish-washing (not dishwasher) detergent with 8 ounces room-temperature tap water. Using a clean cloth or sponge, blot the area, working from the outside of the stain toward the centre. Rinse with clean water and blot with a clean towel. Mix 1 ounce white vinegar with 8 ounces water and repeat the above steps. This helps remove any soap residue, and it also deodorises. Place a clean, dry towel over the area and stand on it to pull up moisture. Keep doing this until no more moisture comes up. Here are some more tips to help pet owners: Remove pet hair from upholstery or carpets by wiping the furniture with a slightly dampened sponge or cloth, or using a roller or rubber glove wrapped with double-sided sticky tape. Dry your dog with its own personal chamois - it takes moisture off fur faster and makes their coat soft. Banish dog smells from carpets by sprinkling baking soda, then vacuuming after 15 minutes.

If you are continually unlucky in love, you may begin to wonder what on earth may be wrong with you. You probably ask yourself: 'Is it me?' Research in a leading journal of psychology suggests relationships are often shaped by early experiences of social interaction, so perhaps it could be you after all. In a report published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology , it is suggested that the way in which you think, feel and behave in your adult romantic relationships is governed not only by what's happening in your current life, but is also a direct result of your past. This can include previous romantic relationships as well as social relations extending all the way back to childhood. Following 78 people over a period of 25 years, the report authors studied four pivotal points in their lives: infancy, early childhood, adolescence and adulthood. At the first checkpoint, when the participants were 12 months old, caregivers reported on the children's attachment and exploratory behaviour. At the second checkpoint, when the participants were 6 to 8 years old, the participants' teachers were asked to rate how well the children interacted with their peers. At the third checkpoint, 16-year-olds were asked to describe their close friendships. At the forth checkpoint, the participants' romantic partners were asked to describe their experiences and their partner's expressions of emotion during their relationship. Interactions between couples were then observed, to evaluate their expression of emotion. The findings of this study suggest that the expression of emotions in adult romantic relationships can be related to a person's attachment experiences during earlier social development. Those participants who were secure and attached as infants were rated as having higher social competence as children. Children who were socially competent among peers were found to be more secure and closer to their friends at age 16. Participants who were closer to friends as a teen were more expressive and emotionally attached to their romantic partners in early adulthood. "The findings highlight one developmental pathway through which significant relationship experiences during the early years of life are tied to romantic relationships during early adulthood," said W Andrew Collins, the report's lead author. "One encouraging finding, however, is that the study does not suggest that an individual's past unalterably determines the future course of his/her relationships." Collins points out that the report is not suggesting that people cannot overcome ongoing relationship difficulties. If you seem to fall out of one bad relationship and into another, it could well be you at the heart of the problem, but that doesn't mean you will never live happily ever after. However, it might be worth thinking about whether your relationships seem to follow a familiar pattern. Admitting that "it's not you, it's me" may be just what you need to stop repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

Jet-to-let purchases are the talk of the property industry as more and more Britons plough money into buying up properties overseas. But not all overseas property owners purchase with the intention of being part of the jet-to-let set. Most buyers intend to enjoy their property as a private holiday home and a future investment, only later realising the benefits of letting, according to a survey of holiday homeowners. To assess the mood among those buying property abroad, Holiday Lettings (www.holidaylettings.co.uk) conducted a survey of its holiday homeowners. It revealed that while 74 per cent of owners said rental income was the most significant benefit of their overseas purchase, only seven per cent stated this as their original reason for purchase. More than half - 51 per cent - of holiday homeowners originally purchased because of the advantage of low cost holidays. However, with the rental market abroad booming, many are tempted by the added income during the peak seasons. Buyers view their properties as a long-term investment, with 42 per cent not expecting or intending to sell their overseas property for the foreseeable future. Most also chose their property's location because of easy access to and from the UK, making them ideal for the letting. For those buying property in Spain, research has also indicated a distinction between holiday home and retirement home purchases. Buyers looking to retire there had a preference for property located inland, where you can get substantially more for your money. For a holiday or rental property, being close to the sea is still the most attractive feature. Holiday Lettings says, "The survey exemplifies the current dynamic of the overseas property market and the lucrative aspect of letting out holiday homes. "It is interesting to monitor the mood regarding overseas property purchase from an owner's perspective." Another study, conducted by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), has estimated that 5.5 million Britons are opting to live abroad. IPPR found Spain to be one of the top locations for emigration, alongside English speaking nations such as Australia and the US. In line with that research, the largest group of Holiday Lettings' homeowners looking to emigrate were those with property in Spain.

TAKING EARLY RETIREMENT: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Although research shows that, surprisingly, most people are actually quite happy in their jobs that doesn't mean that given half a chance many of us wouldn't take an early retirement. But leaving work before 'official' retirement age isn't as simple as packing up your desk and heading for the golf course. When considering early retirement the first thing that will come to mind is the effect on your finances. Obviously the government isn't going to roll over and give you a couple of extra years' state pension, so what are you entitled to and how can you make the most of your money when you're no longer supported by a full-time wage? As things stand men are entitled to draw state pension at 65, women at 60. However, between 2010 and 2020 women will reach pensionable age at 65 until 2024 when both men and women will need to reach 68 before drawing a state pension. Likewise, the earliest one is entitled to draw a company or personal pension is 50, rising to 55 in 2010. Serious illness with a life expectancy of less than a year is the only situation in which your pension can be drawn early - 100% in a lump sum for a single person, 50% for those married. Retiring early may also affect your state pension entitlement. Why? Simply because while working you're building up entitlement through paying money to the taxman. So what can you do to ensure you get the maximum from your retirement fund without spending any longer than you have to behind a desk? If you're under 60, voluntary National Insurance contributions can be made while part time or casual workers can also add to their NIC record. Likewise men aged between 60 and 65 may be entitled to contribution credits. Speak to your local tax office to get good advice on how to make the most of your state pension. Personal or company pensions will also be affected by early entitlements - you will have saved less money which needs to fund you, in theory, for a longer time. In addition, final salary schemes, based on how many years you have worked, will be less too. Pension schemes differ and indeed some may make allowances for retirements due to ill health or redundancy, so be sure to check your policies carefully. To be sure to get the most from early retirement trace entitlements from past jobs which you may have forgotten about, where possible buy additional years from a final salary scheme, increase your contributions to existing pension schemes and use tax-friendly savings such as ISAs to boost your income and give you the lucrative and relaxing retirement you've always dreamed of.
