Space proven data acquisition chassis

About ACRA CONTROLACRA CONTROL is a world leading supplier of airborne data acquisition, real-time data

processing and end-to-end systems to the aerospace industry. A private company with

two decades of experience, our reputation is built on reliable and innovative COTS

products including data acquisition units, airborne recorders, network switches,

telemetry products and ground stations.

ACRA CONTROL’s technology leadership is a result of sustained investment in R&D

and engineering expertise backed with AS9100 quality processes and a consistently high

standard of documentation. This combined with strong program management ensures

top class capabilities in a wide range of space projects.ACRA CONTROL’s customers

include all of the major aerospace prime contractors and test agencies with products

supplied to over 300 aircraft platforms in 40 countries worldwide.

The ACRA CONTROL DifferenceACRA CONTROL’s data acquisition products have exceptional channel

density with an extremely rugged construction. A 21st century all

digital design ensures clean and accurate 16-bit results from a

modular, scalable system that can be easily extended to meet new

application needs with plug-in modules.

The hardware uses finite state machines, not software dependent microprocessors,

eliminating the risk of software crashes and enabling live on power-up functionality

and fast recovery from brown outs.

Our rugged data acquisition units have

earned a Technology Readiness Level of 9

for launcher applications on the NASA/ESA

TRL scale through their operational flight

heritage and extensive environmental

qualifications.

LaunchVehicle Flight InstrumentationACRA CONTROL has proven reliability andperformance on launch vehicle applicationssuch as United Launch Alliance’s Delta II andSpaceX’s Falcon 9. Transmission black-outresends are handled by black-out buffers toensure no data is lost on launch or re-entry.ACRA CONTROL’s distributed system approachfurther reduces weight and cost over legacysystems by reducing wiring requirements.Multistage launchers benefit from dynamicformat switching that enables seamless andcontinuous operation. Multiple encodingformats are supported such as CCSDS, RS-422and PCM. Integrated recording is alsosplashdown survivable for reusable boostermonitoring.

Rad Tolerant RTUs for SatellitesACRA CONTROL technology is being leveragedto provide compact, radiation-tolerant RemoteTerminal Units (RTUs) for distributedinstallation on satellites, replacing the conceptof centralized data acquisition directly to themain computer. The RTUs are connected to themain computer via avionics busses, resulting ina saving in harness mass and complexity.Changes are simplified as there is no need torebuild software and retest the main computerwhen the telemetry is reconfigured. With no EEPROM or no SRAM, the live onpower up RTUs provide a robust, cost effectiveand weight saving solution.

ISS Data AcquisitionACRA CONTROL’s technology is ideal forInternational Space Station applicationsincluding onboard systems monitoring, experiment supervision and a number of systemdata recording solutions. Requirements such asadvanced signal conditioning, avionics bus monitoring, video/audiocompression, integrated data loggingand multiple output formats are allsupported in a single smallchassis. Systems can also bescaled to a multi-chassisdistributed network forsystems monitoringapplications. A built-in testoption allows users toremotely determine theoperational status of thedata acquisition equipment.

Telemetry TechnologyACRA CONTROL offers advanced PCI hardwaretechnology with bit synchronizers and SmartSource Selectors. This combined with PCMdecommutators, RF receivers and display andanalysis software can provide a total end to end

telemetry and ground stationsolution. ACRA CONTROL hasthe highest performance bitsynchronizers in its class withadvanced Smart Source Selectortechnology that yields significant

SNR gains. A two channel productperforms 3dB better than theory and aneight channel product is in development.Other developments include CCSDS and

Vertibi protocol telemetry handling.

Flight Test InstrumentationACRA CONTROL combines environmentallyruggedized products and decades of FTIexperience to provide a range of solutions forapplications such as high altitude balloonexperiments and drop tests, X-planes,technology demonstrators and re-entry vehicletesting. Reinforced modules and low pressureresistant components ensure the dataacquisition and recording system will survivethe harsh environment while still acquiringhighly accurate data. Simultaneous telemetryand recording is offered with these proven crashresistant memory units.

SpaceXLaunch services company Space ExplorationTechnologies Inc. (SpaceX) selected ACRACONTROL’s digital flight instrumentation fortheir Falcon 9 launch vehicle and Dragonspacecraft. ACRA CONTROL was selectedbecause of the company’s credentials onprevious launchers, COTS products andwillingness to accommodate customerspecific technological needs.

ULA Delta IIA United Launch Alliance Delta II heavy booster, equipped with an ACRA CONTROL distributedsystem in a master/remote configuration, wasused to launch the NASA/Jet PropulsionLaboratory's Dawn solar-electric poweredasteroid orbiter. Having first passed rigorousflight environment testing, the data acquisitionsystem was installed in a highly hostile locationnear the rocket motors. It performed flawlesslyduring the duration of the flight, with goodtelemetry data throughout. Further successfulmissions featuring ACRA CONTROL on theDelta II include GLAST and OSTM.

GEDAACRA CONTROL isdeveloping theGEneric DataAcquisition system(GEDA) to providedata acquisitionsupport for scientificexperiments installed in the European DrawerRack (EDR) of the Columbus research laboratorymodule on the International Space Station (ISS).GEDA is a modular data acquisition systemcomprised of standard ACRA CONTROLmodules, providing acquisition for physicalparameters such as temperature, humidity, pressure and microgravity acceleration and aninterface to data from other sources. Data isstored on removable CompactFlash memorycards and simultaneously transmitted overEthernet to the EDR.

IXVESA selected ACRA CONTROL to provide theData Handling and Telemetry Subsystem for theIntermediate Experimental Vehicle (IXV) toacquire the large quantities of mission dataused to verify the performance of criticalre-entry technologies as well as critical vehiclesystems performance data. The Data Handling

System for IXV will consist of COTS DataAcquisition, Network Switch and Recorderproducts and will store data onboard as wellas provide a telemetry stream in CCSDScompatible format via S-Band transmittersto ground.

ULA / NASA X-37 ALTVBoeing Advanced Space and Launch Systems(now part of the United Launch Alliance)selected ACRA CONTROL to supply theDevelopment Flight Instrumentation (DFI)system in support of the X-37 Approach andLanding Test Vehicle (ALTV). The four-chassisshipset was configured as a master withthree remote units. The X-37 was carriedunder Scaled Composites'White Knightmother ship – ACRA CONTROL’s productswere also used for the flight certificationtest of theWhite Knight 2.
